Fantastic Small Inn

Review of The Mash Tun
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 May 2024
We stayed 3 nights in 2 different rooms (Macallan & Glenlivet) and would not hesitate to stay here again.

3 nights, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, and a few drinks.

Rooms: Roomy, comfy, and clean. Both of our rooms were on the top floor and it did get a little warm while we were there. We're spoiled by AC and I'm not going to hold this against them. There are fans in the rooms. Great beds and large bathrooms, BUT... the shower in the Macallan is not designed for someone 6'3". It was comical, but I made it work. The shower in the Glenlivet room was much better.

Restaurant: Delicious and reasonably priced. They are busy. Make a reservation! The breakfasts aren't my favorite, but breakfasts aren't really my favorite anywhere. My wife and I split the Scottish breakfast and that worked well for us.

Staff: Never an issue with any of them. Maybe a slight eyeroll when we asked for bacon instead of smoked salmon with our eggs, but she did it. 😂

I added a 3rd night to our reservation late and ended up in another room across the hall. We were grateful for the accommodation and the staff moved our luggage while we were out running around.

If you're staying in the Aberlour area, stay at the Mash Tun!

***I'd also like to once again apologize for stealing the key for the Glenlivet room. We got to Oban (~3 hrs away) and I found the key in my pocket. The key rings are HUGE! I have no idea how I did this. I put it in the mail and emailed them immediately. So, once again, my apologies!***

Love this pub! From the atmosphere to the drinks and food as well as the service. It was all 5 stars for a pub. We were lucky that it was in between lunch and dinner so was just us! The bartender was really kind and we learned a lot from her. The food was incredible. Top cheeseburger I've ever had. Hubby had lamb ragu and loved it too. Highly recommend this lovely pub.

My husband and I called in around 3.30 on Sunday for a drink after a long walk along the Speyside Way. We walked in and saw several people eating and noticed all the empty tables were set, but there were stools around the bar and one gentleman was standing having a beer. We sat down on the stools and waited to be served. The two women on the bar were busy getting drinks for diners so we patiently waited. They stood directly in front of us while they got drinks, they kept walking past us, no eye contact was made and they didn’t speak to us at all. If only they had said something like even to tell us to leave, or they would be with us in a while but there was nothing. We felt very uncomfortable, but we were thirsty and were sure we would get service soon. But it was when the older of the two woman went back behind the bar and starting polishing cutlery and started talking to the man having a drink and still ignored us that we knew we weren’t welcome. For the short time we were in I have to say the surroundings were beautiful, it’s just a shame the hospitality was missing. I hate to write bad reviews but customers are your bread and butter and after reading some reviews we aren’t the only people to have been treat this way.

Stayed here for 2 nights with another couple. The Mash Tun is a beautiful hotel. Delicious Scottish food, wide variety of whiskys to sample. Super friendly and attentive staff, spotless clean rooms.
All in all amazing experience 10/10, hopefully return one day.

Room tip: Book a table for dinner as it tends to be busy

Popped into the Mash Tun for a drink at the end of a walk with out two dogs to Aberlour as we we have done for the best part of 22 years last week. Normally in large group but this time my wife and I. We were also checking our reservation for dinner the following night was in order as when i tried to book by email we didn't get a reply so had phoned and wanted to make sure it was confirmed. As always the place was busy because its very good but there was space with both customers and staff sitting at the bar but we were not permitted to stand at bar as it was booked. It was really disappointing and we got the distinct impression we weren't wanted. As we couldn't get in we went up to the Spey Inn Bar at Craigellachie and the welcome could not have been more different, positive, enthusiastic, warm and welcoming and these were not experience mature people just young adults with a desire to deliver great service. We booked for dinner and cancelled at the Mash Tun and returned their another four times during our stay. We fully understand the commercial needs to focus on food which has better margins than simply drinks in these difficult financial times and be more of a restaurant than a pub however we love the Mash Tun and it's actually hard to write this but want it to be better. Service is an attitude and sadly lacking on this occasion. Best regards Ken Scott
