We arrived at the Dowans after quite a long and tiring journey on the Saturday night, the place itself is in a lovely location and the views are beautiful. The hospitality leaves to the imagination.... the place has huge potential and with a lot of money spent on it and professionalism could be a 5 star country house. Don't get me wrong their strong points were that the rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable...however it was not nice to be awoken at 7.30am to vacuum cleaners and very noisy staff on the ground floor. I believe it is a family run hotel, the man we found to be pretty kurt and cold but noticed he was like this with the other German guests so we did not take this to heart. The reception area does not look like a reception but rather you walked into to someone's home....there is a desk and no signs for reception and the staff who I assume are family members don't bother wearing professional attire. We even noticed one of the staff drinking wine whilst still serving guests....not very professional.....We did come for a good whisky experience but they had ran out of Cardhu 12 year old...? on a Saturday night? should they not have stocked up? they did offer Cardhu 15 at same price for us which we thought was admirable. The man had also informed us at reception that for dinner we better eat now (just when we arrived) or after 8pm...we all needed to feel settled in and after a long drive we said we would eat after 8pm. 8pm is more like 8.45pm by the way, and when my partner asked him if our table would be ready around 8.30pm, he said very coldly "I did say after 8pm!" we were actually googling on our phones where else we could eat in the local area but since we did not want to drive plus the hassle we decided just to stay....
The meal itself was quite good and the service by one member of staff, a smiley junior member with brown hair was very uplifting however, £27 for a fillet steak with a little tomatoes and small amount of chips? I don't mind paying out for a decent fillet but really I felt it would have come with a bit more on the plate....the Cranachan was a joke, don't order this in the case you want skooshy cream on a plate with a couple of raspberries and be charged £6.95 for it? no was not happy with this.... In the morning, it took us 45 mins after ordering to have breakfast!...service too slow and staff that did not seem to be with it...Please make sure that when you check out you ask for an itemized bill as they did not offer this and just gave us the totals....we then went back in to hotel to ask for all of this and they did then give us that...noticed we had been overcharged for having one more drink than we had had however we let this slide as could not be bother with the hassle....I understand we will probably have a full blown explanation to this review by the hotel however it is not going to change our minds....never will return.
