“Peace & Tranquility”

Gilfach Nature Reserve
Reviewed 21 April 2014

We visited the reserve twice over the Easter weekend, once by car & then on foot. The scenery is simply stunning. There is a wonderful trail that runs from the car park by Marteg Bridge along the river & then up to the Visitor Center. A young man called Darren was on duty at the center when we were there. He was friendly & informative. There are various walks from the Center taking in different habitats. We were lucky enough to see Redstarts, Siskin & a Vole (to name a few) while we were there.

This ancient Longhouse farm is historically interesting, and the wonderful wildlife walks and peaceful places to sit by the river, make it a lovely place to be. The information centre is excellent, the old railway line is a good level walk, and interesting in itself. The Old tunnel is now a haven for bats and so on. A beautiful place, tranquil and interesting - what more could you ask for?

Keep him on the lead because of sheep and cattle occasionaly around. Plenty of parking spaces. Picnic tables. Beautiful views and walks. Watch the salmon leaping October/November as they return to their birth places.
