Gilfach Nature Reserve

If you are near Rhayader then visit this wonderful reserve. I took my elderly mum and as she couldn't walk the trail I drove the narrow road to the Visitor Centre. There a young warder was brilliant,he showed us where to see a tawny owl sitting in an oak that we would never have spotted and was so helpful and informative. Redstarts,Redpolls,Flycatchers and Tits were all feeding nearby and there is self-service tea and coffee with loos too(including disabled ones). Yes the drive to it is a little tricky but a visit here to drink in the most beautiful, peaceful place is well worth the effort

The red kite centre is a natural valley and lake which has been landscaped by cutting back the pine trees to facilitate the opening up of the area where the birds circle to feed at the same time every day, 2pm in winter, 3pm in summer. The trees have been used very imaginatively by a very clever wood carver who has made a children's playground with playthings entirely made from pine, plus a few other things such as a large bird feeder with exquisite carving of birds. although quite steep, wheelchair users can access the feeding site by way of slopes beside the steps, and there is a good cafe with eating outside and gift shop.Very informative with the history of the decline in the bird numbers which have increased enormously since they have been feeding them.

In May - June the bird life is excellent and the reserve is set-up to view them well. Great possibilities of Pied flycatcher, redstart and dipper. Good idea to forbid feeding on the reservee (poor choice of food from visitotrs has affected young birds). Tripods are not allowed in the visitor centre area but there's lots of places where better photos can be had. Very friendly staff

I've been there several times the keepers hate dogs so don't bother if you have a dog there is no nature there just a massive 60mile an hour road in the middle of it you have to keep dogs on leads except some of the paths are challenging so if your dog pulls you it's very dangerous they fill the place with stupid rock circles that have no meanings and signs about your dog all round the park what you can't do and if you just want to photograph the red kites just go to the bottom of the road and there is more there than in this reserve if you can call it a reserve with the amount of traffic that comes through it

If you are 'into nature' then do visit. The main car park is about a mile from the cottage- which is unmanned. Very small (6 cars?) car park at centre. There are toilets and shelter available at the Actual visitor centre- and coffee making facilitiltes. Not a cafe- so don't expect one! There is a disabled loo - though walks not really easy for those on crutches and not suitable for wheelchair users (husband on crutches but was keen walker). That said, the views from Gilfach base are spectacular! The drive up is hard on the clutch - be warned! I fell in love with it- the wildlife is amazing!
