We arrived from Suffolk for a weekend of off-road motorcycling. Mary immediately introduced herself and sorted out rooms- we thought she was joking when she said we were in the West Wing! She makes you feel like a guest in her home, not like some bland anonymous hotel chain.

The rooms are basic and dated, but have a bit of oldy-woldy charm about them and have everything you need for a trip like this. The beds were amazingly comfy and I had a great nights sleep.

Breakfast was a good old English cooked- not massive, but set you up nicely for the day and there's toast and cereal too.

Having come back slightly damp from a day out, it was great to use the drying room for our boots. The bike guide organised through Mary was brilliant (Pete).

As I say, you get what you pay for- we didn't pay a great deal, but the hotel came up trumps and as someone else said, Mary makes it!

Would certainly recommend for a cheap trip, but if your trying to impress someone, look elsewhere!

Had a lovely warm welcome from Mary.
What a terrible shame that this massive hotel is hardly occupied. Beautiful old building with lots of character. We had a room at the back which was very peaceful.
Can't decide if it should be modernised or not ....was lovely to step back in time. Like staying with at my grans house when I was a child.

Had a beautiful breakfast and nothing was too much trouble.

Hi, I'm Chris... Mary's IT manager & close friend. Thank you SO much for your review.

Mary's ultimate aim is that NOTHING is too much trouble and that everyone is made to feel at home. HOME is ultimately important. The Lion Royal is VERY proud that it's not a soul-less, generic shell.

"Like staying at your Grans house" made Mary's day. It sums The Lion up quite nicely and we're very proud of it.

This was a great weekend and a place like no other. Take a step back in time and become a member of the family.

Mary is a lovely lady and breakfast is good.

Nice town and everyone knows everyone, good night out and lots of places to eat

Room Tip: Not the posh type more homely

Thank you so much for taking the time to review us.

The Lion was first mentioned in historic documents over 300 years ago & (in all likelihood) has stood on this site for a good deal longer.

We're proud to be a "step back in time" and that we're a good old fashioned hostelry. We're delighted that you felt part of the family as that is our ultimate aim. We want all of our guests to feel at home & that nothing is too much trouble.

We're glad you liked our breakfast. We DO offer healthy alternatives but hey... you're on holiday! Our FULL English breakfast (with fried bread to die for) is a holiday treat aimed to set you up for the whole day.

The Lion Royal is unlike any other place, its well worth a visit if you like somewhere thats not commercial or modern. Mary and her staff will do anything to help you - we had a lovely breakfast and our pony stayed in the field behind the hotel whilst we did our shopping. Cant comment on the rooms as I havent stopped overnight. The trekking centre connected to the hotel has some lovely quiet horses and ponies and the staff are friendly and have an excellent knowledge of the area.

Its difficult to rate this place with stars as its a bit like marmite - we love it but if you are after modern efficiency it definately isnt for you.

Thank you so much for your review. We too have mixed feelings about Marmite. Too much & everyone hates it, but just a tiny bit (even for Marmite haters) makes everything feel cosy.

We're know that we have the Marmite factor. Mary is very proud that The Lion remains an historic hostelry. Commercial & generic are alien to Mary's vocabulary. Homely, welcoming & a place where nothing is too much trouble is Mary's aim.
