We arrived at the old swan after having a large meal at another sandwich bar, walked around and began to feel hungry. We popped into the old swan for a cake and were shocked at the appalling tearoom. Firstly, we were told to move out of the way for other customers who we're waiting in the narrow doorway. Unlike the customers who arrived after us, we were not given the option to take out the cakes. The tea rooms lacked any atmosphere due to the absence of music. The cinnamon swirl tasted "like cardboard" and the brownie was dry and unchocolatey. Overall it was a cold and unpleasant experience.

We just had a snack but it was tasty and the atmosphere was friendly. Olde worldly surroundings. Homemade soup tasty and piping hot

We arrived in Rhayader rather tierd and having missed our lunch. At 4.00pm, we did not want a meal but a sandwich and cup of tea to keep us going till dinner. The tea room which was open until 5.00pm, had an array of cakes and pastries on display and an impressive list of sandwiches on the menu. As we sat down, a lady who was sweeping the floor called over to us that we could only have what was on display. We asked if we could have a sandwich and she answered"no" and carried on sweeping. One has to wonder why anyone would go into the hospitality service if they have no concept of customer service or social skills. Fortunately there were a number of other outlets in the village more than willing to provide a service(and take our money).

We were very lucky when we arrived at the Old Swan Tea Rooms that we were able to fit 8 of us in, it's not a large place and seems to be constantly full! However, we did fit and all enjoyed our food very much. The Welsh Cawl is particularly good and my wife enjoyed her Macaroni and cheese. There was a highchair available for my brothers 6 month old baby and the wait staff were very efficient and friendly given the amount of people in the cafe. There is also a very good choice of food on the menu plus a large specials board. The cake is also amazing. I would strongly recommend this little place but get there early!

Have had some lovely hot food here - and always good vegetarian options too - but the highlight has to be the cakes...gorgeous carrot cake, rich chocolate fudge cake...too much choice!
