“Lovely old hotel, bit more attention to detail required”
Reviewed 27 January 2013

The Sun Hotel is a lovely old building, oozing with character. Finding our room was a bit like a rabbit warren, but exactly what you'd expect with such a building, and all part of the experience. The common areas were contemporary in style, and created a good welcoming impression in Reception and good ambience.
The bed was comfortable, and the decor was contemporary. Flat screen tv with plenty of channels. No complaints so far.
On inspecting the bathroom though, we were dismayed to find the shower cubicle thick with black mould - absolutely disgusting. All the chromework and glass in the shower were covered in hard water marks. Come on, this is easy to fix with a squirt of Viakal or other limescale remover - not a very good impression.
Loo brush was filthy too, as well as its container. Again, easy to fix, but pretty revolting to discover as a guest.
We had a fantastic time at the birthday party we'd booked in to attend at the hotel. Great function room, nice ambience and welcoming. Drinks were expensive (£5 for a large glass of wine) but probably comparable with other similar hotels.
At breakfast time on Sunday we were the 1st guests in the restaurant. There were approx 6 containers of cereals, none of which had more than a handful of cereal in the bottom of them. There were a measly amount of dried-up looking pastries (which turned out to be stale, on biting into a couple).
We had to ask for the cereal to be replenished (took approx 10 mins). We also asked for fresh croissants. Waited approx further 15 mins, then got fed up waiting and left the restaurant (the croissants never materialised, although the waiter told us they were coming - perhaps they were being flown in from France ?...)
Breakfast Waiter was way too relaxed - v little in the way of customer focus (didn't welcome us on arrival; didn't come to ask if everything was ok; didn't offer to refill coffee; didn't remove dirty plates).
All in all a lovely old hotel, and I'd like to visit again, but would hope these areas might be addressed before then.
We paid £62 for b & b for 2 of us.

When I booked I was warned that often there are evening functions until midnight. However, I did not expect to be kept awake on my first night (Saturday) until 4.00am in then morning by residents shouting, swearing and racing up and down the corridor outside my room. This experience naturally detracted from my stay. The staff who are very friendly and helpful were apologetic. The lunches and dinner are very good and excellent value. Breakfasts are great too.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is at the end of a corridor away from noisy fire doors. Check that the windows c...

We booked in and the hotel is like a rabbit warren. We were so pleased with our room it had its own staircase. The bed was big, clean and the bathroom lovely to, a nice big bath. Staff very helpful, we booked for sunday lunch and the restaurant is pleasant. The chef made me a bacon sandwich in the morning, nothing too much trouble. Lovely location, would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Room 19. Just be careful of the narrow staircase.

Arrived at the Hotel and had to wait almost ten minutes for a member of staff to turn up and book us in! We were given directions to our room and off we went. The room was tidy and of average size, the bed was very comfortable, so no complaints there. The reception on the TV was very intermittent and kept breaking up. We were out for the rest of the day and returned about 9pm and went for a drink in the bar. There was no chance of any food as there was a function going on in the suite upstairs, so any residents who wanted to eat had to go out and get something. The 'do' upstairs was in full swing, however this was not a problem as the our room was shielded by the heavy door adjoining the landing. The problem occurred when the local drunks turned up in the courtyard outside the hotel, directly below our bedroom window! There is a car park at the rear of the hotel which can be accessed from the front of the hotel via an archway. If the double gates were closed this would stop the foul mouthed drunks from walking through the courtyard. In the morning after having showered, my partner and I had to share a towel, as the hotel obviously thought the room was for single occupancy. Breakfast was good, but the topic of conversation all around the room was the noise outside from the night before. I know it was on Boxing Day but there are limits.

Room Tip: Do not take room 7, or any room overlooking the courtyard.

I took my grandmother for a sunday lunch here and was very happy i did. the young man serving behind the bar was lovely and so helpful. we both had roast dinners and the portion sizes were more than enough and the food was nice. definately value for money. was very busy there but that didnt affect the service or the timing and we had a lovely lunch in our own time. will definatly go back but might book in advance next time as some people got turned away as there wasnt enough room.

I love this place, you couldn't possibly get more central to the Town Square.
Staff are always friendly and the cooked breakfast is to die for.
Rooms are smart and tidy, with good facilities.
The bar is well stocked and if you're buying a meal it is all very reasonably priced.

Can't go wrong with this one.

Room Tip: Book early and book in advance for the better rooms.

The Sun Hotel is a very old building in a very old town so to a lot of people the words 'historic' 'picturesque' and 'quaint' come to mind ..... me, I think 'old' 'musty' 'creaky' and 'cold'. I was pleasantly surprised by the Sun Hotel in Hitchin. They seem to have managed to maintain the charm of the building while updating enough in terms of the room amenities and decor to make it comfortable.

The location is fantastic if you need to be in Hitchin. You can walk to the Market Square in about 30 seconds. There are a huge number of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs/bars within a few minutes walk in just about every direction.

The room was fine, nothing spectacular but it absolutely did the job. The bed was decent, nice linens, it was clean and everything in the bathroom worked.

I paid £50 B&B for a double room - I was on my own but that is the room rate so 2 people could have stayed for the same price which is quite a bargain really.

The service was good, no trouble on check in/out but the reason I gave an excellent rating for service was mostly down to the night staff. It was a late night and quite a few of us tumbled back to the bar at around 2am. The night porter who doesn't even work the bar was kind enough to serve us, even managing to dig up some hot chocolate from the kitchens for the teetotaller among us. There might have been more than a round or two before we finally disappeared up to our rooms and he was just a gent throughout - don't know his name but a top guy.

No idea what breakfast was like as I didn't make it out of bed in time but I believe they serve from 8am - 10am at the weekends.

So now for the negatives, and to be fair they are not very big but here goes anyway .......

I mentioned that it is an old building, well that is most apparent in the corridors of the residential part of the building. Crumbling plasterwork and general musty oldness the further away you get from Reception and the bar areas - like I said before the rooms are not like this at all, it just seems to be the corridors.

Also, the place is a rabbit warren. My room window was visible from Reception, just across the other side of the courtyard on the first floor, so close you could walk across to it in 5 seconds ....... not so simple to actually get in there. Up the stairs, double back on yourself through an unmarked door, along a corridor and round a corner, up some more stairs, through a door, down the corridor, round a corner, down some stairs, down the corridor ....... you think I'm exaggerating, but really I'm not, it took me a good 5 minutes to struggle up there with my bags. So yeah, for anyone with any mobility issues or anyone lazy it's really impractical.

There are rooms on the ground floor accessed across the courtyard from Reception so I would suggest if you don't want the adventure of getting to your room then maybe ask for one of these easier access rooms.

Overall a good hotel and a good stay. I would stay here again and I would recommend to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room if you don't like to walk!
