“Quite disappointing.”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The Bella Vita seems to be run as a convenience to the owners rather than a customer focused business. The Check-in desk is in the restaurant, inaccessible from the room block and certainly not user friendly. The room was adequate enough but there was no welcome / information pack / fire and safety notices and as there was no access to staff for the majority of the time I felt we were left to our own devices. We had a block booking of four rooms and it was quite evident that some were better than others. One of our party was charged more than the agreed price but that was rectified after "negotiation" (although I see reading other reviews, overcharging is quite common and even if a genuine mistake makes the management look quite poor and shoddy). Our room was very dingey as there was no daylight because the window was sheeted over (??). The bed was very comfortable but the toilet seat wasn't attached very well to the bowl and kept slipping off at the most inconvenient moments.
Breakfast was a fiasco being shunted between tables in the restaurant before allowed to sit. The full English was adequate but not special with undercooked sausages. The owners attitude again was as though we were an inconvenience to them rather than valid paying customers. (See Fawlty Towers)
I can't, I'm afraid, recommend the Bella Vita as a place to stay in Hitchin and certainly was the only blot on a fabulous weekend.

Stayed at this hotel for one night, room was a reasonable size however i felt the ensuite was a little on the small size and room was very dark. The bedroom had cobwebs in the corner of the room and the bed linen had black marks on them.

Reasonable rate for the size of the room, which if a little more care was taken in preparing the room you wouldn't be able to fault anything.

would definitely stay again.

This charming hotel offers a unique, traditional experience, with the added advantage of fine dining in their restaurant, that offers both amazing dishes and lots of vegetarian choices upon request. In addition, the breakfasts were second to none. The hotel is a little unconventional in that access is via the restaurant and therefore, there is no reception to speak of however, this just adds to the charm and the homely atmosphere. We stayed in a room with a beautiful four poster bed, luxury bathroom and unlimited character, including a ceiling with wooden beams. Such decadence made the whole experience a very special one on a romantic weekend away. The staff couldn't do enough for us. They were professional yet friendly and made us feel very much at home, whilst maintaining very high standards of service and decorum. Thank you so much to Giorgio, Oritzio, Carol and all the staff at La Bella Vita, for ensuring our stay was a very special and unforgettable one.

Room Tip: Oops, rated a swimming pool when there isn't one but unfortunately, the website won't let me...

I stay at the Bella Vita 2 to 3 times a week on business.

The hotel is in a perfect location and Giorgio and his team are absolutely fantastic.

The rooms are great and the food is excellent.

I highly recommend the Bella Vita for both business and pleasure.

We had booked to stay at love and let live when we got there he was overbooked and sent us here! It's mouldy, smelly, dated and noisy to sleep! Parking very handy. It seriously the most awful over night stay I've ever had! The room we got wasn't shown online!

I brought my husband here for a night to celebrate his birthday. The food is amazing! Laid out beautifully with a friendly owner and waiters at dinner time. Breakfast was freshly cooked.

The hotel is in the centre of the lovely town of Hitchin. The room was spacious with antique furniture, a kitchenette and a large flat screen TV.

Checkout at 10.30 was a but early although we got this moved to 11; and the waitress at breakfast was a bit too casually dressed.

I'd certainly go back for the food.

So many unpleasant things to say about the services, the place and the owner. First of all, I made a reservation, face to face with the owner Giorgio for a long stay (9 nights) and we got a deal. The room I booked was not available when we arrived. When we were about to pay the bill he increased the price. We booked a double bedroom with breakfast. Most of the nights just one person stayed over so one breakfast was taken, although we were aware of paying for two, it was not matter for us. Breakfast time is from 09.00-10.00. Only 1 hour. Pretty weird and short time. Why? Not too many guests? That's right. My mum had breakfast alone everyday. My daughter stayed over with my mum two nights. By the way, no proper breakfast available for children!!! For kids they offer coffee or tea! No cereals, no chocolate, but hundreds of one flavor of jam. They do not have any reception and it is most of the time closed. It was winter time and my mum had to wait on the street outside for them to open the dinner room, late by the way, when it was raining. They also closed earlier because they do not have enough guests?. One advice: if your card key does not work properly, do not bother the owner at all, even if there is no staff around to help you. Just be patient and wait for a few hours. They will appreciate that by not increasing the fare when you check out. Second night the hot water did not work, but do not bother the owner at any time, he will appreciate that by not increasing the fare. The bathroom is always frozen because the heater starts working when you walk in, so no time to get it warm enough. Smart technology! To end, if you try to make any complaint the owner will invite you to do not come back anymore, instead of listening to you and to try to give better service. Unprofessional staff and not conveniently dressed.
PS.- The carpet of the room vacuumed during the stay
