My first time here on Trip Advisor and I probably wouldn't have submitted this review had it not been for the Managers attitude.
I took my partner down to Rye for her birthday and was pleased to find The Lodge had a vacancy for us as our usual stays were fully booked. I can only describe our first impression as cleverly photographed on the busy A259 with a view from one room of an adjacent roof and an old bonfire from another but we thought hey we're only here to sleep and we'll be out all day. We went down for breakfast the next morning to be told that due to a " Technical issue " the Chef hasn't turned up today, something I found to be not unusual from some locals later in the day.
This morning we went down for breakfast and the Chef had turned up so we looked forward to our Full English but only to be served with part Grey part Pink Bacon cleverly disguised Grey side down, when I spoke to the Manager about it he said its caused by the way they have to "layer" the bacon to cook it under their very small grill, odd I said to him as there are only us and another couple staying here this weekend and they had the Continental ! Interesting, he went on to say they have to cook copious amounts of the stuff regularly in case a coach party should turn up unexpectedly and if they don't materialise it all goes in the bin, the place was so dead the only thing it lacked was Tumble Weed !!!! Coach party... Hilarious .
Bottom line you don't serve Meat to people that's been left out and uncovered or just old !!!!
My two stars are 1for the cleanliness of our room and the second for the very adoring staff who deserve a better manager to lead them and one who doesn't lose his cool when being criticised about the quality of the food he allows to be served.
There are better places to stay that offer much better value for money and I now know why this place was empty.
If you stay my advise is to eat out, The Queens Head just up the road in Icklesham serves mouth watering "Fresh" food including an All Day Breakfast that will keep most going for all of the day.
Would I return or recommend The Lodge to others ...er... no

I don't normally respond to reviews and must take a moment to thank all our customers for their kind words and endorsements. I did however feel it necessary to respond to this review as it is particularly damaging. Firstly, in defence of our breakfast chef, she is one of the most reliable staff members I have had the pleasure to work with and unfortunately we were unable to find cover early on a Saturday morning. The comments on the bacon and our food handling standards are unfounded and not correct. The bacon served was cooked that morning and most certainly would never have been left out overnight; this is a professional kitchen with a four star rating where best food handling practices are followed and recorded.

We had three most comfortable nights at the Lodge. The room was more than adequate, most clean and well appointed. Good sized shower room with a shower that really worked well.
The staff were most attentive and helpful. We ate in two evenings. Salmon with a well made and flavoured Provençale sauce and excellent Sea Bass accompanied by a sharp caper sauce. This was grown up proper cooking at its best. The hotel is well placed for exploring one of the most interesting parts of our sceptred isle. My wife and I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay

This hotel is in a very pretty area of the countryside. But due to the way the hotel is built (it is a conversion of a former semi-industrial building) only two of the bedrooms have views of the surrounding land; ours faced into a tarmaced car parking area. Such a wasted opportunity.

On the positive side is everything else: a good-sized, clean, well appointed and quiet room; helpful staff.

The restaurant is rather bland so we chose to eat a short way away, up the hill in Winchelsea, which is idyllic and has a good pub, the "New Inn".

Room Tip: Ask for one of the two rooms with a view.

We stayed for one night after a trip to a vineyard. We agree whole heartily with comments regarding the staff. They are extremely pleasant and helpful.
The bedrooms although not the largest were spotless and we had a wet room excellent for someone slightly disabled. No trying to climb into a bath to use the shower. Only critisism the window blinds. We were on the ground floor and if the blinds are open for light people could see in. Close them and in daylight you need a light on. Could the ground floor have some kind of window covering like a voile panel or even a net curtain. We realise this would mean extra washing!
Last but not least we think the chef/cook must have had a night off as our main course was appalling. There is a huge difference between rare and well done steak and which ever way you like it cooked it would be inedible to you cooked the wrong way. Ours were cremated.
However, we would stay here again but eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: At the back away from the noisy road

We have just arrived back from a two night stay at 'The Lodge', having had a wonderful and memorable time. The setting is beautiful, surrounded by National Trust land and only a stone's throw from different towns such as Hastings and Rye. The room was clean, fresh and modern, being self-contained with steps up to it, and a nice ambience. The staff could not do enough to help, they were friendly, professional and helpful and attended to all our needs, always asking if everything was ok. The food is gorgeous, we had a range of starters, main courses and desserts and the taste and presentation was lovely. We have big appetites and we were so full from the food. The restaurant had a nice buzz and atmosphere to it and people seemed to be really enjoying their stay there. Given that it was August and high-season, the cost was realistic too! We were originally going to go to the New Forest, but are so glad we came here instead. We will definitely making this a regular place to stay and eat. We highly recommend it!
