“Another restful Christmas at Bucks Farm”
Reviewed 4 January 2011

Our first return for 3 years and it was great to be back for a peaceful but active Christmas break. Between our extended family (granny + 4 + 4 teenagers) we had 3 cottages. The cottages and other facilities are clean and warm and very well maintained and we appreciated the improvements since our last stay, particularly the en-suite loo/basin in the double room in Harvest Keep. We got less use out of the gym and sauna/steam room, but appreciated the pool as ever. However the boys would like to see a return of the full-sized pool table please!

I've not given the location full-marks as it is not on the beach at Southwold or somewhere as stunning - it's in the countryside just outside Halesworth and you need a car to get anywhere. However there are good walks from the farm - we did a fantastic one via the pub in Huntingfield and Heveningham Hall.

In response to other reviewers, the bossy notices are there to ensure the place is kept nice for future guests and to keep the animals safe, the litter policy has to be strict as the ducks etc are roaming around the open space - and anyway, why should you get away with dropping litter or disturbing other guests when you're on holiday?!

It's good to know the owners are on hand - Ian and Jo were able to help us out on a couple of occasions - which all helps to make a holiday run smoothly.

Our annual visit to Bucks Farm is excitedly anticipated by our four children (eldest soon to be a teenager). The freedom of the surroundings, the space and country air allow for our batteries to be recharged. All six of us appreciate the warm welcome from Jo and Ian and the relaxed environment of the farm with much on site to enjoy. Animal feeding first thing is a daily highlight and the hours spent in the pool are great fun. Games and films, pool, table tennis and toys are all readily available for use. The cottage is always immaculately presented, warm and comfortable. Nothing ever seems too much trouble for our hosts – cake on arrival, attention to detail, time to stop for a chat and interest in each of us as an individual. We would heartily recommend Bucks Farm as a great place to stay and have already booked for 2011. Thank you to the Newton Family for making each holiday such a special time with many treasured memories.

We were hopefull of having a lovely relaxing break with our children and Bucks Farm seemed ideal. I spoke to the lady owner on the phone when I made the booking and she seemed very friendly.

However, on arrival, we were met by the husband of the couple (an ex-teacher) who told us we couldn't "park there"! Hardly the friendly welcome we were expecting.

Although we had paid a high price, the facilities at the farm are good - an indoor swimming pool, a games room for the children and a few animals for them to look at and feed in the morning.

The accommodation is of an average standard (a little tired and damp bathrooms) but there was plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably and it had a freezer and dishwasher. The tv reception also wasn't great so we could only get a few channels.

However, there were "rules" posted on the wall in every room and sheets of rules for you to read on your arrival and a double-sided page of more rules was given to us on our last night to remind us of their expectations when we left! The husband owner also reminded us of "the rules" at every opportunity and, like the last reviewer, made unfounded accusations to us about recycling put in the wrong bin and was also openly critical of parenting skills and had comments on many others who had stayed on the farm. Unfortunately this really spoiled our holiday as we constantly felt under scrutiny and that our every move was being judged or observed.

this is a lovely setting, the accomodation is very nice. The swimming pool is great for the children. If you enjoy the 'big brother experience' this place is for you. The owners of the accomodation live on site and watch your every move. They go through your rubbish, which is a bit strange but we understand that this was to ensure that you recycle properly. They have all their recycling in a shed probably a few months worth, which seemed to cause an unusual amoung of wasps. The kids did get stung. Their tidying policy is second to none, they will follow you around ensuring not a dot of rubbish is accidentally dropped and will make sure you and your children are told off is anything is left out of place. On our second night, at about 10pm, the husband came to our door to hand us a can (dna tested of course) accusing us of having left it outside . We have children ranging from the ages of 6 - 13 and yes occassionally the 'do not leave rubbish around' policy lapses. He said he was disgusted as this had never happened before!! Fortunately he was around that night with his torch to spot this injustice. When the children go in the swimming pool they must be supervised by an adult at all times (which we of course adhered to) fortunately the owners are on hand each time you go into the pool to check that the adults are adhering to this rule. We were critisised for generating too much rubbish, we were critised for making too much noise. One of our friends was critisised about our parenting skills. This I do take issue with, as we all put a lot of time and effort into our children, and really it wasnt their place nor was it justified. Our children were well behaved, a bit boysterous (they were on holiday) but nothing to get your knickers in quite a twist about. So if you adhere to the 'children between the ages of 6-13 should be kept on a lead', this is the place for you.

Wonderful place, set in the Suffolk countryside near Halesworth. Four self-catering cottages all extremely clean, well decorated and VERY cosy! Welcome pack includes home-made cakes to die for! The kids love the extremely well-equipped games/play room and the lovely indoor swimming pool, but their favorite aspect of staying here is pulling on their wellies over their pyjamas first thing in the morning and going out with the owners to feed the animals and collect the eggs (which they can then have for breakfast!). There is a new fitness suite also on site. Owners Ian and Jo could not be friendlier or more helpful.
Close by we were able to go crabbing at Walberswick or visit the lovely seaside town of Southwold (best fish and chips at the Nelson). Dunwich and Aldeburgh are also nearby But even if we never left the farm, we'd be happy.
Our last visit was our sixth long weekend at Bucks Farm. Our children aged 8 and 4 say that it is their favourite place in the world.
You wouldn't believe it to read this but we are VERY fussy travellers. We just can't fault Bucks Farm!
