“Paradise!”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

Our time at Casa Pan de Miel was absolutely perfect. We arrived after dark and fell asleep to the sound of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the waves below our room. When we woke up we realized we were in paradise. The views are gorgeous, the rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, the service is warm and wonderful.

We spent many happy hours in the beautiful infinity pool staring at the ocean and enjoying the sight of birds soaring overhead. At 4 pm each day, a group of mynah birds would come to the pool to splash and have a drink!

We loved eating our breakfast family style with other guests. The food is freshly-prepared and delicious. We ate other meals at the restaurants on the beach, in Zipolite (a short bus ride away) and in the nearby town of Mazunte, which is a short walk down the road from the Casa.

Our hosts, Paula and Mariana made us feel so welcome. They are both incredibly warm and helpful. We were last minute arrivals with no reservation so we had to change rooms after our first night. "Just pack up your belongings and we'll move them for you!" The staff were very friendly and helpful, too. We intended to stay just one night and ended up staying for four. It was so hard to leave!

I can't say enough wonderful things about the Casa. Just uploading my pictures took me back and I'm ready to book another trip to Mexico!

This is a really beautiful place to stay and to relax. The room had the most amazing view from the balcony - you could spend hours sitting there just watching the birds swoop past and watching the sea below.

The pool, though quite small, is a lovely place to spend time doing a little gentle swimming or just standing in the corner and watching the beautiful view below.

The beach which you access by steps from the hotel was great - quiet and unspoilt, though not much shade, and great waves to watch at the far end of the beach. People were swimming and playing in the waves at the near side of the beach.

It is quite expensive - and you pay extra for (the delicious) breakfast, which personally I think would be better to have included - even just for the basic breakfast.

Dear 65SusanB65,

A big thank you for your lovely message, we’re glad you liked so much our Casa.

Thanks also for your comment on our breakfast, we’re always open to improve our service. We investigated the restaurants & hotels around us and it seems that we are still pretty cheap compared to other places, given that our breakfast offers an all-you-can-eat buffet with homemade bread & fruits, natural & fresh juice plus coffee and tea.

We hope to have you with you very soon,
Un abrazo from Mazunte.

Everything about Casa Pan de Miel is superb. We happened across it through a review in the Lonely Planet - which said that it was 'designed with relaxation in mind'. It completely undersold it. When we arrived, the cab driver asked if he could go and look at the view - it was that stunning. Perched on top of the cliff, with beautiful views, and an infinity pool spilling over the edge, at the height of the birds wheeling about. We arrived intending to stay for 2 nights, and within about half an hour had decided to cancel other plans and stay for 5 nights - and would have stayed for longer if we could, but we were flying back to London. The breakfasts were gorgeous, sitting under the palapa, with everything homemade from the bread to the jam. The beach is reached going down some steps. I could go on and on, but would just recommend that you go.

On arriving, we were dumbstruck by the view. The cab (arranged by the hotel at a substantial discount) pulled down an impossibly steep driveway. Almost before we stepped out of the car, it seemed our luggage had been taken to our room and a beverage was in hand. This exemplary service turned out to be par for course.

Nothing can go wrong at Pan de Miel.

The room: sleek and spotless. Large patio with a wonderful hammock. Panoramic ocean views - from hammock, bed and even from shower.

The grounds: tropically lush and meticulously maintained. The cliff-top setting means that you are eye-level with the passing pelicans and terns. We loved relaxing and reading in the pool or in the palapa.

The service: again, nothing can go wrong. Our hosts Paula and Mariana provided perfect recommendations and effortless arrangements for restaurants, massages, diving and even a Temascal (do it. Well, first google it, then do it.). Do not hesitate about sitting down for breakfast every morning. Delicious.

The location: if beach vacation is your goal, this is your place. You will kick yourself for ever thinking a cruise or all-inclusive resort was an actual vacation. Here you can relax at the hotel or walk down the private stairs to a seclude beach cove. Or another 5 minutes to the restaurants of San Agustinillo. A 15 minute walk in the other direction are more restaurants, and tons of hippies, in Mazunte.

Do not let the walks and steep trails deter you at all (though the place is not suitable for handicapped). Our favorite ploy: walk to mazunte, play on the beach, eat an amazing dinner and then, in a fit of laziness, take a $10M ($0.80USD each) back to the hotel. Perfect.

Enjoy!

Casa Pan de Miel is your best choice for a guaranteed terrific time when you are visiting Mazunte. From the moment you make your reservation until Mariana sees you off in your cab at the end of the vacation, there is not a minute that you will not feel well cared for at Casa Pan de Miel. The rooms are immaculate, the pool area is breath-taking, and there recommendations for restaurants are spot on. We will return again and again to this sleepy resort town mostly because of our wonderful experience at this extraordinary B&B.

Mazunte is an hour from the Huatulco or Escondido's airports on Mexico's safe south coast west of Oaxaca. It is a very small resort town, very simple and basic and local, which hosts a few lovely moutainside hotels above a crashing ocean with seabird rocks forming safe swimming coves. The best is Casa Pan de Miel, a garden of several well designed and appointed casitas with porches overlooking the sea below. At the resort's center is a very lightly salted (no chlorine!) infiniity pool, just the temperature to spend an entire day in staring out to sea. Behind are lawn chairs, a massage room also overlooking the ocean, and the communal dining room for food any time until 3:30 PM. In the evening taxi, walking, or your own car (make it small !) into one of three small towns with excellent local food. It is great value, meaning you'll spend less on this seaside vacation than any other you've taken for sure, and it is isolated, a place to get away. Yet a mid-day flight goes directly to Tucson to get there in the early evening. All this said, the very best part is the quality of the staff, every single one a kind, helpful, honest person, as these Old Mexico Mexicans always have been, and this is part of that still existing culture. The manager, Marianna, is the best of all, making every enquiry into her mission, and we profited with a wonderful bird-watching trip through a nearby lagoon. We'd been forewarned about a very fancy wedding next door, and it turned out that our patio gave us a balcony seat to watch it! The marital couple invited us to the dancing after dinner, which perhaps was the best defense against the music, but such a happy event, happy music, happy people, it was only for the good to over- hear it! We felt that this destination has required not only lots of good research, but also lots of luck, and that we had. I could have spent all day just wandering through the pots of flowers, and I did have a day when I barely left the pool except for crepes wtih sauteed bananas and ice cream served pool side. Not a bad thing to be said, not a single one. Perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the best view and yet some shade over their porch for the hot hours. Ask if the...
