We drove 500 kms and arrived at 5.00 to be told the restaurant was fully booked by the young woman at the desk. - we were surprised and disappointed but we left to walk the 15 minute cliff path to the town that she suggested. This turned out to be a 40 minute walk and we got very lost. When we got back we met the patron and told her we were not happy. She rounded on us and said we could leave if we liked and write as many bad reviews as we wanted it did not matter to her. We very quietly suggested that we would have expected a better welcome but again she said if we not satisfied we could leave.
We have travelled in France for many years and have met all kinds of eccentric people but we have NEVER met such rudeness. Please do not come here if you expect to be made welcome. this is the worst that France has to offer.

I have to say that we love this hotel and have been visiting for a number of years to celebrate special occassions. Its setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is magnificent. The building itself is an impressive 'chateau like' monument.

However, I regret to say that it is all becoming a bit dated and is in need of some redecoration and cleaning. Our room had a balcony with a view over the Ocean but it probably hasnt been decorated/refurbished for 10 years or so.Its such a great pity when you see these magnificent hotels fall into such a state. The owners really need to re-invest some of their revenue.

Equally the restaurant is losing its touch. Where once the principal menu comprised of 5 courses - this has now been reduced to 4. The quality of the food is not as good and its clear that they are in cost cutting mode as our 'waiter' was a young student from Canada who didnt even know the names of the cheeses he was serving.

Qu'elle dommage.....

Room Tip: When you book your room make sure you ask for a room overlooking the Ocean with a balcony. There are...

Travelling with a friend, I stayed at the Primavera in order to visit a music festival which was taking place on the beach no more than 200 yards away. I was happy to pay the pretty steep €130 per night in order to have the convenience of being so close by - plus the hotel has plenty of free parking.

We arrived at sunset and the first impression of the hotel is actually quite impressive - it's a big old building bearing more than a passing resemblance to a castle, and it sits right on the sea.

Stepping inside was just like stepping back in the 70s. I wouldn't say anything was dirty or scruffy, just very old fashioned! The receptionist (once we'd managed to find her) was very helpful, spoke excellent English and showed us to our room.

The room itself was again very dated in terms of decoration. Floral wallpaper that covered all the walls AND the ceiling, and a two tone aubergine bath suite! No shower curtain and no air conditioning - it was a pretty hot day yet the quilts on the beds were quite heavy ones.

However, we got a good comfortable night's sleep with no noise and woke refreshed the following morning. We didn't eat there - breakfast was a very steep €15 per head and was not included in the room price.

All in all this place was convenient and did what we needed it to. It really needs updating, though. I would possibly have given it a 4 had it not been so expensive.

We took a chance on this place, as it had varying reviews. And it was true that the rooms were definitely dated--carpet in the bathroom and bedroom, peachy orange bathroom fixtures from another era, no shield or curtain for the shower, fussy floral prints, no air conditioning, even with the western sun beating on our picture window (though at night it was fine), etc. But with a room with romantic balcony overlooking the gorgeous, unobstructed sea directly below, it’s hard to complain. That’s not easy to get at any price. We were here before the season and the hotel (and the town) was pretty quiet, which we liked--can’t imagine what it’s like in July & August. We also enjoyed the area and the little town of St-Palais, ate breakfast at the café on the main street and watched the passing parade. We ate dinner at the hotel the first night and found it quite excellent, if a little empty, with a good selection of seafood which we love. For what we got, we did not find it exorbitant. We walked around the grounds, but I don't even remember what was there, just enjoyed the sea and the flowers and the big old stone chateau, even if not entirely authentic. Someday, someone will come here and fix the place up and it will be really unaffordable...

Room Tip: It's all about the balcony overlooking the sea. Don't even think about the modern back part.

We only stayed one night at this hotel and could not wait to check out. The rooms are very tired and dated and had a smell of an old peoples home which was extremely unpleasant. It was very expensive - I cannot understand why ? A single coffee was 6.50 euros. The apparently heated pool was very cold and totally unsuitable for children as it was deeper than my 6ft 3" husband all the way around. The rooms are in need of a total refurb and we could hear the next door room having a bath at 6.30 am which woke us all up. Is a good location however that is not a reason to stay ! Truly disappointing, very unpleasant experience.

The Primavera is one of our favourite hotels for special occasions.
The setting is amazing, overlooking the Atlantic coast near Royan, not far from the beaches and night life of Saint Palais.
Whilst the hotel is a little tired the rooms are steeped with history and are very spacious - ask for a room with a balcony.
The food in the restaurant is excellent, as is the view - but its not cheap. However if you enjoy Foie Gras, Oysters and champagne you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony - you wont be disappointed

Just come back from the Primavera. We used to go regularly but hadn,t been in three years. Yes, the decor is very dated and the rooms are expensive, but I think that few things compare to a bedroom right over the sea . The rooms are large and if you get one of the balcony rooms(either the one with two balconies,or the one with one balcony and huge sea-view window) it is lovely. The restaurant can be a bit hit and miss, but I think that the whole experience is delightful.
