The hotel has 4 stars - one at least belongs to Silvia. She was very kind, speaks very good English and very helpful in anything we needed to make a perfect hiking vacation.
The hotel has different kinds of rooms. The standard is very small. Breakfast and afternoon buffet are gorgeous, very testy and rich. We preferred dining outside - in local restaurants.
The recreation area , saunas and swimming pools, are public but very closed. Unfortunately it was open only after noon and very crowded. A nice gesture - each morning the hotel staff offered a daily route that takes into account the weather and other conditions as well as a "Quote of the Day ".

Three generations on this 10 day trip and something for everyone. A superb family holiday with the unexpected bonus of delightful and excellent staff for the children's play area (toys for our 2 and 5 year old were beautifully kept and craft sessions really well organised). No shortage of trips from gentle to more demanding excursions. Hotel was all we could have asked for - nothing too much trouble, plenty of other families staying so many friends to make. Food was excellent and our rooms were very good indeed.

Room Tip: We used suites which were well organised Next time would probably ask for forest view as mountain v...

We were there for 3 nights as part of an InnTravel hiking vacation. They really cater well to hikers & skiers, including providing detailed hike descriptions for independent hikes & daily guided hikes. Even though we arrived on Sept 21st, we got ~20cm of snow our first night so they recommended against going on an independent & we went with their guided hike. We had so much fun with Gitti (the hike leader) that we went on her guided hikes all 3 days. This was the largest but least crowded of the hotels we stayed at, but Sunday to Wednesday in late Sept isn't likely their busy season. That being said, the food and service was great. We'd definitely return.

I just spent six days here and was thoroughly impressed with the genuine friendliness and impeccable service. I have worked in five star hotels in the U.S. and in Europe over the years, and the Sporthotel Matschner is right up there with them.

The daily breakfast, cake buffet and evening dinner were first class, prepared by a skillful gourmet chef who paid attention to presentation and variety. Their servers handled our special requests for our youngest son each night and always had a smile on their face.

The interior is maintained in the beautiful Austrian style and has the charm we were looking for in choosing this quiet town. The rooms with the view of the Dachstein are nice, but you may get some early morning street noise if you leave the windows cracked - so we kept them closed at night.

You will find world class alpine skiing only 15 minutes away and cross country skiing a few steps from the hotel. The hotel is connected to the indoor pool with a nice sauna and kids oasis. Bathrobes and towels are provided.

We will be back next year!
