“Beautiful location but...”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

We just returned from two weeks at the Marnic Apartments booked through Monarch Holidays. We booked mainly due to the previous positive reviews regarding the hospitality offered by the owners and the facilities within the apartments which looked perfect for a self-catering holiday for a family of four.

On a positive note, the apartments are in a beautiful spot and have a lovely pool area which was never too crowded despite it being peak season as most people seem to go to the beach. They are newly refurbished to a high standard and very clean.

We were very disappointed, however, as we booked a 1 bedroom apartment which seemed to be squeezed into the same space as the studio apartments. This meant that the spacious kitchen and eating area depicted on the website was not provided, we only had two rings and a small microwave, and not enough room for 4 of us to sit around a table inside the living room as we were unable to retract the sofabed which our daughters slept on which dominated the living area. It made self-catering practically impossible and meant we had to eat out the whole time. The studio apartments have a full cooker, oven, fridge freezer, lots of work space and eating space which seems crazy as the one bedroom apartments sleep more people who therefore require more space. I can also confirm that the BBQ that is supposed to be available does not exist.

Secondly, I was expecting a warm welcome from the family that own the apartments based on previous reviews so was very disappointed as this was not our experience at all. We never met the English-speaking host mentioned in previous reviews and the only English speaker around was a teenage girl who made it her job to tell us off for any perceived misdemeanour at any opportunity - not very welcoming at all! I totally understand that this isn't accommodation particularly aimed at British guests which is a plus in my opinion, but a smile doesn't require translation and these were in short supply too.

The area is gorgeous but I must stress that you need a car to get to restaurants and a decent supermarket. There is a good and cheap restaurant on the main road above the apartments (Zupcica) but for variety it is lovely to eat out in Mlini, Plat or Cavtat where there are wonderful restaurants with lovely views. You could walk to Mlini or Plat at a push but not with children at night. For a decent supermarket you need to drive to Srebreno (Konzum) or on the road towards Cavtat (Tommy).

I think these apartments are more suited to couples or a family with one young child where the studio apartments would be perfect for a peaceful self-catering holiday. Also don't expect consistent WiFi or English TV channels, this wasn't an issue for me as I wanted a break from reality but the WiFi hardly ever worked and there was only Sky News amongst the hundreds of TV channels available (many of which were pay-per-view porn channels so keep your children away!)

Room Tip: Choose a studio rather a one bedroom as they are actually bigger!

We are a family of 3 and stayed in this apt for 3 nights in early of June.Marnic apartments are well -furnitured with all facilities ,just bring your shampoo and shower gel.The view was breathtaking!
They are near to Dubrovnik and very close to Cavtat which is a very nice town that you have to visit. Certainly you need a car but this is obvious if you want to visit the area.
The only thing that we didn't like and it's our personal opinion was that every morning they destroyed the swallows nests ,and after the poor swallows tried to built another one.....

My mum and I just got back from a 2 week holiday staying here for her birthday. Croatia is a beautiful country and the people are all friendly and welcoming.

We choose these apartments due to the fantastic reviews on here needless to say we weren't disappointed. The views were stunning. We arrived early and were greeted to coffee and tea whilst they booked us in. Upon arrival the pool was not open and the wifi was only working intermittently but our rep Marianna got both things sorted for us.

The apartment was quaint. It did need painting but that is only cosmetic and they were working on more apartments. As previously stated we were there for two weeks but we had the smaller of the apartments with the least amenities. Our utilities included four rings to cook on and a microwave. Unlike our neighbours who were only staying a week and ate out most nights who had a full cooker, toaster, dishwasher and a washing machine all the things we didn't. Luckily my mum is a chef and could cook meals with the four rings we had. This I would say was the only let down with the apartment. Do take mosquito repellent as you will need it. The apartments do have a private beach. If you go past the swimming get pool there is a sign to the outside toilet if you follow the stone at the side of the complex and round the front it will then bring you to a path with steps down to the private beach. It is just some rock but you can lie on or put your feet over the side into the water. If you climb over the rocks to the right there is a little beach but no actual path to it from what we could see. It is a lot of steps to walk back up so personally would ensure you took food and drink down with you if you are looking to spend some time down there save you walking back and too. There are snakes but they didn't bother us the first time we saw was walking get down to the beach but it just slithered away when we got close to it.

Being so early in the season the weather was hit and miss one week of gorgeous sun and a week of overcast and a few weeks showers. However this didn't affect our holiday we found plenty to do and see.
As other reviews state you have to be fit staying here it is a lot of walking and a lot of steps and there is not a path along the top road but there is a walk from the apartments that takes you to plat without touching the main road as you walk up the hill to the main road if you turn by the garages and follow the track you can get through to the steps to take you to plat beach or you can take the steps up to the path that starts in plat to catch the bus or go to the local mini market.

If you are self catering as we were and don't plan on eating out every night then I recommend that you use the Konzum supermarket in Srebreno all the locals use it, the prices are cheaper than that of Pemo and Tommy's and the products are of excellent quality.

The number 10 bus takes you to either Cavtat or Dubrovnik but it is a push to get on it when other reviews stated they packed you in like sardines I was a little skeptical but after experiencing it they were telling the truth. However if you are going to Dubrovnik and back the number 16 goes as far as Plat and is a lot quieter but not as regular. Alternatively you can get the water taxi from plat if you use this to come back you will have a good walk up hill to get back to the apartments. The bus from Plat costs 18 kuna to Srebrano or Dubrovnik and 20 kuna to cavtat this is one way you can only get return so from the main bus stations. Cavtat to Dubrovnik costs 25 kuna. The water taxi from Dubrovnik to plat costs 50 kuna each but is less packed than the bus and gives you a great view of the coastline. I don't know the price of the water taxi from plat to cavtat as I never used that service.

The restaurant at the top of the road from the apartments was ok but honestly we had nicer meals elsewhere. It may be convenient but I would only recommend using it when you first arrive if you arrive late in the afternoon or in the evening for a take away pizza as it is open from 11am to 11pm. If you eat out you will receive a breadbasket before your meal and you will be charged whether you eat it or not no matter where you go. It is also customary to leave a 10% tip or round it up to the nearest 10 kuna.

Whilst staying at the apartments we did two excursions to montenegro and mostar. Montenegro we personally were not impressed with the country is expensive and is becoming increasingly ever more popular and commercialised. In Budva for example the old town is quaint but there is not a lot to see it is mainly shops and designer shops at that where as the the road behind the beach is covered with bars it looks like it is set to become the magaluf of montenegro. Mostar on the other hand we loved lots to see and the souvenir possibilities were endless. They have done an amazing job of repairing the damage caused by the war even though there are still many reminders around. As you cross over he new Bridge there is a souvenir shop on your right that has a video reel on repeat showing you parts from the war, and how they have got to where they are today. If you are lucky you may get to see locals jumping from the new Bridge it is a local tradition and they have competitions in July. However to see a local jump they will ask for a Euro. Once they have collected 30 euros they will then jump.

I would return to Croatia but would personally go further north next time as we feel we saw all we could of the area we were in. If you are looking to go to the southern part of Croatia and don't want to stuck in Dubrovnik itself I would recommend these apartments the owners will do what ever they can to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. I would not personally stay in Cavtat as the airplanes fly directly above the town to the airport and although we could clearly see the airplanes from our apartments there was no issue with the noise of them.

The apartments are clean and they do empty the bins for you on occasion. I would definitely return to these apartments but next time I would go in September when the weather was guaranteed to be a bit nicer.

Other reviewers have pointed out that this location is quite remote and I won't try to disabuse anyone of the notion. That being said, if you're on the market for a quiet, relaxing break in an establishment run by a lovely family, then Marnic Apartments is quite possibly for you.

The location is lovely; perched on a bluff overlooking the Adriatic, surrounded by vegetable plots, orchards and vines, with a few chickens wandering around for good measure (on the plots that is, not amongst the apartments). The owner Ivo could not have been a better host; available when needed but otherwise invisible. Those of you who have had hotel staff monitoring your every move will know how important this is. The rest of the family are equally nice, although Ivo seems to be the only English speaker (our shortcoming, not theirs). We were supplied with apples and grapes from the family garden, a delicious surprise which we greatly appreciated.

The apartments are currently undergoing upgrades so should be even nicer next year. Ours was spacious with decent quality furnishings and good kitchen facilities, including fridge, hob and microwave. Plenty of crockery and cutlery of a basic standard. The bathroom was immaculate and hot water available 24/7; just let it run a minute or so at night to reach temperature.

Only one restaurant at the top of the hill, about 2 minutes' walk, called 'Zupcica', great pizza and the best steak I've eaten in a long time. Prices low to reasonable; wine very cheap. One mini-market about 10 minutes away. Nothing spectacular, but they do stock fresh bread daily.

The only real problem, as others have mentioned, is the road. Croatia seems to have something against pavements and so walking anywhere requires a bit of concentration. Traffic is a fraction of that in the U.K. but still significant. If, like us, you are adults in decent health, this won't be an issue, but older ones and families with children might have a few problems. Of course, if you hire a car, this won't be an issue. Public transport is excellent and regular, with the price of a ticket anywhere seeming to be 15 kuna (about £1.70 or so). The number 10 bus will take you to Dubrovnik one way and Cavtat the other. Both are must-visits, especially Dubrovnik.

Other reviewers have pointed out that reminders of the war are clearly visible and this is certainly true; on our travels we saw a few derelict homes and even hotels that had suffered the ravages of conflict. But it is also clear that Croatia is making great inroads towards a full recovery and tourism is proving a great help in that regard. If you want to play a part in that recovery, you could do much worse than spend a week or so in the company of Ivo and his lovely family.

Room Tip: Didn't spot any duff apartments, so you shouldn't have any problems.

We found the apartments very basic and a few probs in the room like only one ring to cook on and a dodgy shower but the views are to die for from the balcony. My hubby was dissapointed with the size of the room where 3 of us had to sleep abit like a large bedsit comes to mind. But i think a good place to stay to explore the old town of dubrovnik etc.And the owners were lovely and very helpful. The bus is regular the number 10 but abit of a walk to the bus stop they are no pavements so you have to be careful and keep within the white lines abit difficult if you have small children or a pram. All in all a nice hol had by all i found the excusions abit pricey and also where i thought i was going on a cruise cos it was called the 3 island cruise we actually ended up on a bus for 3 hrs and then a taxi boat took us over to a island not good as i got travel sickness due to all the winding roads and i was sick which was quite embarresing so the wording on the excusions wants altering. This was our 4th time in croatia although we go to the north usally i think out of the 4 times we have been this was our smallest accomadation.
