“We actually liked it here - some caveats”
Reviewed 7 July 2011

My wife and her sister are both from Lima and we decided to visit Tarapoto for a few days.
The flight from Lima was so easy and enjoyable - sometimes if there is a storm they have to circle before you land.
We had a normal room down towards the middle of the property and we liked it. This property is not in the jungle or the town but more like the suburbs. Its big enough to wander around in a bit but not too large.
The hotel is really more a conference center and be warned that they rent out areas for meetings. parties, weddings etc. While we were there a small Peruvian girl had a pary and it was sooo loud - complete with DJ and full sound system - singer etc
Why they would risk the tranquil nature of the property for a few extra soles (rental) is beyond me. I would make sure there is no receptions or disco activity planned during your stay. All and all we enjoyed the pool and the restaurant.
I wouldnt call this place cheap but it wasnt that bad for a few days.
You take a moto into town and the hotel doesnt regualte whick motos pull up so the drivers see hotel guests as suckers and the price going into town is often twice what it should be.
This hotel has a sister propery on the river. Pumarinri Lodge.
We booked one night out there and we couldnt get back soon enough to this place. The jungle looks better in pictures than reality. If you do go to the lodge mnake sure they dont give you an upstairs (attic) room with no air or views.
We had them bring us back to this hotel and stay another night - the charged us the higher rate but we didnt care because we wanted out of the jungle.
If you get a chance take a moto to the collectivo station and go to Lamas. Its prety up there and cooler.

Room Tip: dont get a bungalo by the entrance road

We had the pleasure of visiting the town of Tarapoto in North Peru in 2008 and again in 2010. Tarapoto is a thriving town with a modern centre Plaza, a variety of shops and reliable banks but retains the characteristic pot-holed roads and rough-and-tumble buildings around the outskirts. Without this, you wouldn’t be in Peru! The people are charming and friendly and a little Spanish goes a long way. The transport system consists mainly of a multitude of a type of taxi known as a ‘motocar’, not unlike an Asian tuk-tuk but powered by a motorbike. In rush hours the mass of ‘motocares’ make the streets look like go-cart tracks but it is all very efficient, even though a single bus could replace 20 of them.

During our 2 visits we stayed for a number of nights at the Rio Shilcayo Hotel. This is in a very pleasant location at the edge of town, close to the river and set in several acres of attractive parkland. We found the service excellent, comfortable spacious rooms, lovely pool and superb food in the restaurant. There are conference facilities, outdoor gym and the hotel has a courtesy service to the airport. It is also a great place to see the commoner Peruvian birds. Even standing by the drinks machine in the restaurant looking into the foliage of the big trees you can get great photos of colourful tanagers, parrots and toucans. We highly recommend this hotel.

The family proprietors of the hotel also own Pumarinri, a wonderful lodge situated on the forested slope beside the Huallaga River, less than an hour’s drive from Tarapoto. The wood & bamboo rooms are spacious & comfortable with ensuite bathroom & balcony. Make sure you go and spend at least one night there, again the birds are superb, including owls, and ask to be shown the awesome poison dart frogs. The walk to the waterfall provides a chance to experience undisturbed forest and a refreshing swim at the top. Some visits to Pumarinri involve a boat ride down the river for part of the journey from Tarapoto and you can cross over from the lodge to the intact forest on the south side.

It’s all an experience not to be missed.

I stayed in this hotel and had my wedding reception at the hotel as well. We stay in the hotel 1 week. My favorite things about the hotel is the beautiful gardens and quiteness when you walk around the grounds. The waiters at the restaurant are very friendly, and they made our wedding reception a success. My least favorite things were the unresponsive front desk/management, noisy rooms, and overcharging at the end of our stay. We traveled in a group of about 10, and others were also overcharged for extra nights and extra meals at the restaurant. Also, one of the persons in our group was given a room with a cracked/broken bathtub. It took management two days to move them to another room, they were only moved after we said we would not pay the two nights since they had to take showers in someone elses room for two days. Unfortunately, the location is ideal, and hotel is beautiful but until the front desk staff and management is improved I would think twice about staying here.

Since the moment we arrive, everything was great, the service, the rooms and the locations, very clean always... friendly people.
Just 5 minutes from the airport and 10 from downtown, still very very quiet. with a nice pool. if you want to relax and be close to nature you have to visit Rio Shilcayo
, Love the pina colada!!!

This maybe your best accommodations in Tarapoto. All the downtown hotels are extremely noisy. This property is quiet and safe. The downside is the front desk (reception), where service is indifferent and often unresponsive. When we checked we started with a standard rooms, which was much like a college dorm rooml It was dark and dingy. The air conditioner did not work and though we contacted reception three times, it was more than an hour before we were changed to a duplex bungalows. ( Get a bungalow, it is more expensive but worth it). Other requested at the front desk often meet the same unprofessional and lackadaisical attitude. There was no manager or owner present for the 4 days we were there. The bungalows rooms are larger and cleaner, but very basic. Shower have anemic water pressure. Breakfast was included and was OK. There is another hotel in Tarapoto, but it is outside of the town, the Puerto Palmeras Tarapoto Resort. It is comfortable, has good service and a bit more expensive. I would stay here again because of the limited options, but only in the bungalows and with the surrealistic hope that the management comes backs and works on customer service.
