I was in Uruapan for the Feria de Ramas de la Domingo (Palm Sunday artesans fair) and Concurso and stayed at the Plaza Uruapan. The hotel is located on the tip of the zocalo which made it the ideal central location for the feria and concurso which were located less than a block away.
Our room, located in the center of the hotel, was large, comfortable and quiet. There was ample closet space and plenty of room to safely store our accumulation of puchases. The bathroom was large, with a well placed window, good lighting and best of all, hot water and good water pressure. While the rooms are not particularly modern or up-to-date, they were spacious and surprisingly comfortable. Beds in Mexico tend to be pretty hard and unforgiving. The beds at the Paza Uruapan were firm but had enough give in them so that getting a decent nights' sleep was possible.
One of the most striking things about this hotel is the abundance of stunningly beautiful wood that has been used on the interior public spaces. The reception area, first floor stair case, bar and restaurant are all outfitted in dark, well maintained and supple wood which created a warm sense of elegance and ambiance.
Finding good restaurants in Uruapan has always been a challenge, but both restaurants in the hotel turned out to be good choices. The upstairs restaurant is pricier with a wider selection of food options. The Ceasar salad was delicious and uniquely served in a cheese basket (like an Italian frico, onlys shaped like a bowl) as was the trout with macademia nuts. The basement restaurant was a great place to start the day and the breakfasts hearty and filling. There is an extensive weekend breakfast buffet that offered a good array of choices, including eggs, omelets and pancakes to order. The taquito and tacos offered on the antojito menu made for fast and tasty snacks between meals.
Service was uniformily good from the front desk staff, to the maids and restaurant servers, everyone was gracious, helpful and tried hard to ensure that their guests enjoyed their stay.
On the down side, the rooms in the front of the hotel do tend to be noisy, the bar has limited hours and it also has music on the weekends that tends to bleed over into some of the rooms, even those on the higher floors.
While the Hotel Plaza Uruapan may lack some of the inherent charm of the more intimate B&Bs around town, it is a good choice when one needs to be centrally located and have a reasonable number of amenities.
