My husband and I recently took a weekend escape - away from our home that includes 2 dogs, a crazy cat, a teenage boy (no need to explain that) and a whack of renos where things are still a work in-progress and things don't always work as they should....
We decided to try out The Couple's Resort based on a recommendation. We love the Algonquin area so the location of the resort was perfect. It took us over 3 hours to get to the resort so it was disappointing to discover that our room was not ready on time and was going to be an hour delayed. We made the best of things and used the change rooms to dress for an outdoor adventure. When we got back everything was ready for us which we appreciated.
I do have to concur with some of the other postings that things are starting to look very 'tired' in places at the resort - it just surprised me considering the resort has such a high rating. The hallway floors were also quite dirty and wall paper peeling in many places. Just observances...
We had a room with a hot tub which is a MUST as far as we are concerned. It was huge and extremely warm and we loved the view from the balcony.
The second issue we had though, after the delay in the check-in, was that our shower had a very bad leak, limiting the water pressure considerably and making showering a much longer process. Considering we used the shower a lot (before using the hot tub as per the resorts policy, after using the hot tub to rinse off the chemicals, after our runs in the park, getting ready for dinner....) this was a real let down...kind of like being at home...where thing aren't working as they should be which is exactly what we were trying to get away from for a weekend. We did report it right away but were told the problem couldn't be fixed because the part wasn't available. So we spent the weekend with a semi-functioning shower - *sigh*.
The meals, however, were INCREDIBLE! The service was fantastic. (Ashley looked after us - even remembered how my husband likes his martini!) We were very impressed that they took my food allergies into consideration. Speaking of allergies - they removed all things feather/down out of our room - again because of my allergies - very thoughtful!
Second night we decide to forgo the semi-working shower and use the jacuzzi tub in the room....which was great until we tried to drain it. The knob to open the drain was loose and could not be tightened without an allen key. The tub sat full of water all night long. Again...kind of like home...which, again, is what we were escaping from!
Overall the resort location was amazing (we also used the Park Pass), the meals were fantastic, our server in the dinner room was excellent, the bed, fireplace and hot tub were lovely but the weekend had a dark cloud hanging over it and was somewhat disappointing because of some really simple maintenance issues that should have been reviewed during that hour long delay before we could check into our room. Those are things we expect at home...not in a deluxe resort. Basic amenities like showers and drains should simply WORK. When we discussed these things at check out we were told that the room would probably be shut down for maintenance AFTER our departure - BEFORE would probably have been better. Bottom line - we spent $1000.00 for 2 nights to have to deal with basic problems that were completely avoidable before our arrival.... but we ate better food than I would have served at home!

Thank you for your comments. We have a 4pm check-in time and we are glad the room was ready when we said it would be, we only allow earlier check-ins if the room is ready earlier. We are sorry to hear that the machinery broke down in your room, but it can and does happen without notice to our maintenance department. Rest assured that parts were ordered and it is fixed (it is a little harder to get parts up here at the edge of the wilderness compared to a city hotel, as the hardware store is not just around the corner, we are glad you managed with us). Our 5 Star rating is based on all the things we do right especially that each room is larger than an average hotel room, that each has a Jacuzzi plus a bathtub or shower, that bathrooms have large counters, that furniture is above average in quality, the beds are at the highest end of quality and that rooms are in good repair. Unfortunately, although you loved the food and thought the service was fantastic, they do not count towards our 5 Star standards, but we are still glad this is what made you happy as we think the staff here are exceptionally friendly and helpful. Currently, in this quarter, we are spending over $100,000 to upgrade around the Resort and this will all be ready for opening day December 26th. We easily spend that and much more each year in upgrades to the Resort and this is what helps us stay a high quality resort. We hear we are tired, but it is only because we do not look like a modern city hotel or a modern 500 room resort in the South, for this we disagree and we purposefully use lots of wood that we source from our local mills so that we can blend into our natural surroundings of Algonquin Park. We look forward to serving you again, now that it is all fixed – JohnS Owner.

This is our fifth time doing a fall three-night getaway to the Couples Resort. We love the Master Junior Suites. This time we booked one of the chateaus and were disappointed with the older hot tub although it was beautiful with a wonderful sauna and huge steam shower. The next morning we downgraded ourselves to a master junior. They are always clean with wonderful linens and fluffy towels. We enjoy the hot tub and the steam shower and just doing nothing except some walking and biking if the weather is good. The food has always been excellent and plentiful. Special thanks to Alicia who made dinner a fun experience.

I would agree that some areas are a bit "tired". The carpet in our suite was stained and a piece had been removed and replaced which was poorly done. Other than that, everything was pristine.

We love the dress code and we are glad that they are sticking by it. Dressing up elegantly to be sitting by people in jeans is unacceptable. If you want jeans at dinner, go to a different lodge or dine in your room. Sorry if this sounds harsh; but the rules are there for all to see. Part of the appeal of this resort for us it to get dressed up and to be elegant. We also really enjoyed the entertainment on Saturday night over dinner.

Room Tip: If you like a modern hot tub with good jets, choose a master junior suite. The hot tubs are also un...

I booked the resort for our anniversary not knowing what to expect. Our oldest daughter had worked there for a season and couldn't stop talking about the resort and the family that owned it. Check in was a breeze, everyone was so helpful and professional. We found that the resort gave us some much needed quiet time to spend together. The accommodations and dinning experience are first class second only to the ambiance and personal care offered by the staff and the owners.
Fantastic time, will definitely do it again.

My wife and I decided to go to the resort for our 12th wedding anniversary on a recommendation from a co-worker. On the way we found several signs pointing the way along the highway and so it was very easy to find. When we arrived and checked in we were presented with our keycards and pointed in the direction of the dining room to make reservations. As this did take a few hours on the road we decided to keep it simple and had room service delivered rather than getting dressed up for the whole dining experience.

We made our way to the room with luggage in tow and were very impressed with the size and cleanliness of the room. We enjoyed our 5 course meal in the privacy of our room by wood fireplace with the lights on low. The next day we booked some horseback riding at the local stable Adventure Stables via the front desk, everything was taken care of for us. And neither of us had any previous experience, Allison, the guide was fantastic. Afterwards we each had a spa treatment, my own the hot stone therapy and a longer session for my wife, each of us felt fantastic and pampered after this. We had such a great time we again decided to stay in with room service and the food was fantastic again (even better the second time, in fact with different courses ordered.) A night in the hot tub on the balcony was fantastic despite the colder weather outside didn't feel it.

The staff were all friendly and helpful, the only issue we did have was the first morning some of the cleaning staff were rather loud as they slammed doors and yelled to one another outside. While I was getting breakfast my wife had heard one of them yell something outside our door, but this was the only negative and the next day it was fine. Power had gone out in the entire area the morning that we checked out, but we still had our gourmet breakfast in bed delivered despite the power outage.

We definitely want to return, the one thing that's amazing about this place is that you can do things during any season, as they have events during winter as well as summer. We want to return for the dog sledding.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 2nd floor of the Masters and found that during the night and day we heard noises fr...

Thanks so much for the review. I am glad that your experience with Alison was a good one. You will love the winter and dog sledding. It is an adventure for sure. And as a return guest book a free spa treatment after.. Perfection. We will speak to the cleaners about the voices carrying down the halls in the morning. I am sorry if it disturbed you at all. We look forward to seeing you again.

What a perfectly delightful weekend we just spent at Couples Resort. Upon arrival after the wondrous drive through Algonquin Park, the property was less "rustic" then expected.. This well maintained piece of heaven was the stage for romance, relaxation and intrigue. Check in was a breeze. The "lay of the land" was clearly portrayed in a kind way.. and we were off.. 1st stop dinner reservations.. Done.. next stop, Villa.. What a warm and welcome structure.. Firewood in hand, a glorious fire was build in the large stone fireplace.. the villa was absolutely perfect.. yes fresh paint and replacement drapes would only improve the setting.. but seriously life is what you make it.. so make it we did.. Supper was delicious.. the staff was more then accommodating, our needs and desires met. The wine list was lengthy, something for everyone. Supper concluded and fullness was not even the word to use.. The 5 course meal both nights far exceeded our wildest dreams.. the quality was glorious and the service outstanding.. There are amenities there for the taking.. we choose to use the resort provided park pass. Normally there is a nominal fee for anyone that chooses to stop anywhere in Algonquin Park. This was free to use for the day (a credit card hold of 200.00 for lost passes.. so don't loose it) but to meander down the quiet dirt roads of the park, carefree was a nice addition. Our stay at Couples Resort was utterly peaceful, tranquil and romantic.. And will defiantly be a place we return in the future.

My husband and I just returned from a one night stay at the Couples Resort. We were celebrating our Anniversary and just wanted to go somewhere that was quiet and we could relax. Well we did. We stayed in the "junior suite". I agree the rooms are "rustic" but we loved that! Ours was very clean and the jacuzzi tub was one of the largest ones we have ever had in a hotel room. The wood burning fireplace was very romantic and since it was a bit chilly last night it was great. We had a lovely view of the lake. The king size bed was very comfortable. The food was excellent and they gave you plenty. We were very full afterwards. Our waiter "Derek" was very knowledgeable and very friendly. My husband and I enjoyed the "semi formal" dress code and as with other reviews you are told in advance of this when you book your room as well by your confirmation email and it is on their website in their policies. We will definately return again. The only disappointment was that I wanted to book us a massage but there was no registered massage therapist working on Sundays.

Room Tip: We would like to try a "Spa Villa" next time. We had the chance to see one when we were t...

I am so glad to hear your stay was such a great one and that you loved our newly renovated Jr Suites, we love the Algonquin feel in them as well. I am glad you got a chance to see the Spa Villas and may choose that for your next stay. You will love the sauna in the room and steam shower. As an FYI we recently added staff to our Algonquin Spa and we now offer RMT treatments on Sundays. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

I just arrived home from 2 nights at Couples Resort. We were looking for a place to get away after our wedding and Couples Resort was the most perfect place to relax, unwind and reflect. All the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were magnificent, nicely decorated, clean and spacious. We were lucky to have an outdoor hot tub which was fun and perfect after getting an hour stone massage. All in all we had a wonderful time, the food was delicious and of course going for a hike was breath-taking. We will gladly return and highly recommend this resort to others.
