“Hard to find, but glad we stayed here rather than Evora”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2008

We stayed at 10 hotels in Portugal and this was one of our more interesting destinations. We planned to stay in Evora for 2 nights, but after reading about various hotels, learned about this place which sounded interesting. We found a package on the website which offered an upgraded room, meal and wine tasting.

This was by far the hardest to find hotel but a good value. The hotel was a bit farther from Evora (18km) than we had anticipated but the oddest part was trying to find it. Signage for various hotels had been excellent so we expected to find directions off the main route. Failing that, we took the turnoff into the town where the hotel was located. After driving around we arrived in a gravel parking lot at the end of the town with only a sign for a church Monte do Carmo. We drove a bit down the dirt road in the direction of the church and then decided to turn back. We flagged down a resident, showed them the name of the hotel (he only spoke Portugese, we only spoke English) and he directed us back towards the gravel lot/dirt road. We concluded that he must have thought that we wanted the church, since the names sounded similar and tried another resident. Same result. After driving 2km down the road we came to the hotel/church.

The young woman in reception was very friendly and spoke excellent English. We hadn't been sure what the included mean would be (lunch, dinner, etc) and were surprised when she handed us a menu and told us to order now (!) and that we could have as much as we liked. We opted for two shrimp and mushroom appetizer (the best item on the menu), two pastas with vegetables (overcooked) and one lamb chop entree. We subsequently ordered two deserts and coffee. We also had a bottle of wine.

The price for the 2 nights, which they honored was 169E for 2 people. Turns out there was a mistake on the website and it should have been about 219E plus 5E each for the wine tasting (which I would recommend skipping).

The hotel was described as having an ecopool. Turns out you swim with tadpoles. While I was somewhat skeptical at first, it was quite hot and I had a lovely time cooling off with the amphibians and fish.

I really enjoyed this property. We had a great room with high ceilings in an out of the way location. Not for everybody, but if you are looking for something different, you may be very please.

I was pretty much surprised as arriving the hotel: it was recent, a reconstruction of an old "ermida" using modern and beatiful furnishing! The breaskfast was just astonishing:fresh juices, warm orange cakes and croissants, traditional bread of Alentejo!Loved it! The Staff is great. They will do everything for you to have a great stay! In the morning we rent bikes for 2,5Eur(!) and went explore the huge property!
The photos on their website don´t show how great the hotel is!!
( And for real hot days they have a fantastic natural swiming pool!)

This hotel really surpassed my expectations. It is built in the place where before was an "ermida" (isolated church), and the original chappel still exists. It consists of 4 buildings around the chappel originally used to receive pilgrims that came to meditate, that were very recently transformed into large Hotel rooms, with all comodities: private A/C, big bathroom, TV, etc... My room was over 20sm and the WC over 10sm. The rooms are modern, with the kind of details that gives that "extra" confort: the linnen is cozy and has that "clean" smell, the pillows are very nice, the shower gels, soaps and other bath items are exquisit...
To get to the hotel you have to travel 1 KM is gravel, so you can guess the place is really quite and inviting to relaxation. In Summer, Alentejo is quite hot, and in the Campus there are no shadow spots, so you either stay in your room, in the pool or in one of the rooms of the main building - there's a restaurant (good "a la carte" meals at around 20€), an "honest" bar (you take the drinks and then declare your consumations), TV and reading room with the latest portuguese newspapers - every room is well decorated, in a mix of modern and austere, typical and cozy.
The swimming pool is quite special, so I left it to the end - it's a biological pool, which means the recycling process is all natural, achieved through bombing the water between the "swimming" part and another tank where there are plants that do the job. In practice, it's like a lake, with the swimming part separated by special walls made of some plastic material (the floor is also of this material). The positive part is that it's really beautifully and well integrated in the nature and there are no chlore or othe chymics. The negative part is that there are insects or other bugs in the water (they look like underwater flies) and nearby... Except for some bees in the outside, the "in-water" fauna is harmless, but I don't feel too confortabe swimming with them around. If you like nature, you'll love it, just see the pics.
Other big advantage of this hotel is that, although it is in an extermely quite place, it is just 20 minutes away from some of the most beautiful cities in Alentejo: EVORA, Estremoz, ... which makes this a perfect place to visit Alentejo. It is also only 1h15m from Lisbon.
As you can guess I liked it a lot, at at the price I got it (less than 70€, for 2 plus children) it's surelly a great deal.

  • Liked — Spacious, modern, cozy
  • Disliked — No minibar (but they left a free bottle of water in the room)
