We stayed one night here, passing through to the West coast. Arthurs Pass is a small place, but we were glad we stopped over. The service was friendly and easy, and we were the only people staying the night so they delivered cereal and milk, fruit and juice to our room the night before, and allowed us a open-ended checkout time. We took advantage of both and had a good walk through town and along some trails before heading off. The room was warm, not large but enough for a night, and the view was lovely from our window!

Set on the main road itself so not difficult to find. Upon arrival, we were checked in very quickly and taken to our room. It was basic, but had a decent bed, a small TV, heating, and a small bathroom with a good shower. The food in the restaurant was very good, there was a log fire in the lounge and board games so you could while some time away there. The breakfast was continental but enough to get you going. The staff were efficient and friendly. Recommend a stay for a stopover between the two coasts.

Accomodation is fairly basic but clean and tidy and perfectly ok for a night or two. It is a bit noisy with not a lot in the way of soundproofing between rooms but this wasn't a huge issue. Location is excellent as a base for exploring all of the surrounding walks. The real surprise was the quality of the food in the restaurant which was first class.

Upon arrival it was not clear who the owners or staff are, they were very casual in their approach and dress sense. I know this place is old, it does have a lot of characer but no matter how light-footed you are or tried to be, even a mouse would cause the floors and stairwells to creak! I didn't like this because I felt I might have been waking/disturbing everyone during the night etc. It wouldn't hurt to get rid of the many spiders and cobwebs that lurk in a few corners too. Despite the open fire, the dining room was still cold as these do not chuck out the heat like many think they do. The food is good but very pricey and unfortunately for those with a sweet tooth... no dessert menu. Good location to many walks in the Arthurs Pass area.

The accomodation here is good, clean and ocmfortable and the service friendly and efficient. We had an ensuite room at the back of the building, which we reached via an outside staircase. It was quite basically equipped with the kettle, mugs, a couple of glasses and a jug for the milk (which you fetched from a fridge in the corridor, shared with two other rooms) hiding in the wardrobe/shelving unit. But the bathroom had a bath, very welcome after a long walk, the bed was extremely comfortable and there is everything you need. Back in the main building we sat in front of a log fire and watched the news with a glass of very good wine recommended by the chap behind the bar, then tucked into a superb dinner of pork belly with crackling, mash and loads of vegetables. We spent two nights here and loved the place and the way the staff treated us as friends. It was also the least expensive of all our stopovers.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back where we were (room 11) are probably the quietest as they are away from the ro...

I ranked this a 3 as they didn't have a dessert menu.

The hotel has quite outdated decor, but a warm welcoming feeling when you walk in. The service staff or owners, unsure who they were, were dressed very casually, like in ugg boots, but the service was average. When we arrived there weren't any free tables so had a drink at the bar until one was free.

We ordered the bacon wrapped chicken and fish and chips.

The food was exactly as it was described on the menu, nothing more, nothing less.

I would have liked dessert but was not offered anything nor did I ask.

Pricing in many of these outer areas tend to be higher than metro so expect to pay a bit more than you normally would.

I'd eat here again if we were staying more than one night in the area.

We spent two nights here over Easter with our two girls (11 and 13) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The accommodation is budget end and the building is showing its age in places; however Arthur's has real character and everything was clean and the beds, whilst simple, were comfortable and warm. We were in a five bed room with shared facilities and it was spacious and had places to hang jackets and bedside stands for gear. A simple but adequate continental breakfast is included in the accommodation price.

The staff and the food made our stay very special; they are friendly and welcoming, and the food was excellent. The restaurant is obviously popular; both nights we were there, there were a lot of diners who weren't staying in. Try the roast vegetable stack! My 13 year old daughter was very enthusiastic about it, and so was I...

The staff were great to our kids. The wine list had some nice items on it, and there was a good range of other drinks at the bar.

We would happily stay here again with our kids and recommend this to others on a budget who want something a little more special than a backpackers - and appreciate good quality food - you'll certainly enjoy the meals and the atmosphere!
