“Take away”
Reviewed 6 August 2014 via mobile

Was on the way to Punakaiki and needed a quick bite. Saw this cafe and ordered a set of fish and chips to go.
The fish was average while the chips were probably the best I had found in South Island so far!

Reviewed 3 July 2014

A pleasant little cafe with seating out front and in the garden.

We had been warned to look out for the keas swooping on your food but we didn't see any!

Lots of old photos to lokk at

“Great food, nice warm cosy atmosphere, good value.”
Reviewed 16 June 2014 via mobile

Wobbly Kea is a great placse to eat.
We stayed at the Alpine Motel for 3 nights, hiked in the Arthurs Pass National Park and tried to eat our way through the Wobbly Kea dinner menu.
Good tasty wholesome food - and generous servings. When you hike for the day a good hot shower and a real feed, a long drink and a good sleep are necessities. Our stay ticked all the boxes. And if you appreciate a good coffee next morning by someone who knows how to make real coffee go to the Wobbly. The bigger place on the other side seemed to cater for the busloads. The other place opened earlier but didn't stay open for dinner and drinks. Their coffee was below par. Sort of like comparing the airport lounge to the bar where everyone knows your name.

“A place with a history”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

The most noticeable thing about the Wobbly Kea apart from the odd name is the stuff all around you. This had been the home of Oskar Haus, a German who had set up a ski school/mountaineering equipment business in Arthur's Pass in the early 1900s There are memorabilia all around the dining room as well as some great art for sale on the walls. The food is good too: we enjoyed some splendid pumpkin soup and an interesting mixed salad topped off with friendly service.

“The annoying keas spoil the experience”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

An ideal place to stop on the journey from Christchurch to the West Coast with good range of snacks and tasty coffee.

Unfortunately, the keas are not so hospitable. We tried eating our meal outside in the sunshine but the birds were very demanding and forceful which made the whole experience very uncomfortable.

The worst part was that there were some university students doing research on the habits of these annoying birds, and were more interested in watching them than helping to remove them from the eating customers. The birds also have a liking for rubber and are prone to eating windscreen surrounds. You have been warned.
