“A romantic gem in a glorious setting!”
Reviewed 24 July 2013

We were initially disappointed not to be able to get a double room in the main hostel for our stay, but wait a treat was in tore for us! For the EXCEPTIONALLY reasonable rate we had a gorgeously quaint and modernly appointed three bedroom cottage (all doubles) secluded from the road and all to ourselves. This was the final night of a romantic South Island road trip for us so it was absolute bliss to arrive in from a snowy twilight walk to a toasty roaring fire and fully equipped kitchen to whip up a delicious feast. We had heard about local kiwi conservation and were delighted to hear a few midnight calls from the bush behind. Our host was so friendly and gracious, and the location was a treat with beautiful walks and stunning scenery to capture. Complete with a full stack of dry firewood at our disposal. We will definitely be coming back!!

This is an amazing place to stay. Clean, homely and very well-run. The location is good, with lovely mountains surrounding Arthurs Pass and a river nearby. I was here in winter and there was plenty of snow on the ground so could only really do a couple of walks and there really isn't much in the way of shops - so make sure you bring your own food (although the bar across the road does food). It was a great place just to chill out really. I can imagine in summer it gets very busy. The hostel was very well heated and a great place to hang out in the evening. Bob who works there is extremely friendly and makes you feel welcome. If you are a YHA member you also get free internet. I will definitely be heading back.

I stayed 3 nights at Mountain House. As all YHA hostel, the decoration and the atmosphere are not something you will remember of it. However, beds are comfortable and dorms big enough, the location is great, really close to the Avalanche Peak track.

A cheap accommodation which i stayed in for 1 night in Arthurs Pass before heading to Fox Glacier.

Nothing spectacular but no complaints because it was really cheap. Shared toilets, bathrooms and cooking area. There's a common area to lay around but there isnt really much to do there. It is beside a convenience store and opposite wobbly kea cafe.

Cheers!

Friendly hostel set in a perfect location for some beautiful tramping! Rooms were modern and clean, and there was plenty of comfortable lounge and kitchen spaces for relaxing and chatting with friends.

The four in our group had a private room, good-sized, with 2 large windows. The bathrooms and showers were large and clean. It was a very cold night, but our room heater worked well. We enjoyed using the shared kitchen and lounge, as well.

Clean. Friendly. Awesome. Great value.
Cheers bob and co you have it spot on.
Also if the weather is good you have to do Avalanche Peak. The views really are out of this world. Wow wow wow. Apparently I now have to write a 200 character review. To satisfy trip advisor. Great great great place to stay.
