After having an awful breakfast in Kaikoura at 'Encounters Cafe' we were driving down the line towards christchuch when we noticed a cafe with plenty of cars parked outside. We entered to find pleasant staff, a nice selection of food and cake on offer and some some scrummy things on the board. We decided on a cheese and onion toasty, a pea and ham soup which was part of a deal with your choice of coffee and muffin or scone for $14 and a slice of carrot cake we wondered into the lovely garden at the rear. Water was swiftly delivered to the table along with cutlery. Within minutes we had our soup (and an extra bowl so we could share) which came with a lovely seedy thick brown bread, a very tasty toasty with pickled pieces of cucumber and tomato on the side. Our coffees were hot and not to strong. Such a pleasure to eat here after our terrible 'encouter' in Kaikoura early today.

First time that we have been to Mainline station cafe on our way up to Blenheim and how utterly charming. Even though it was busy the service was outstanding, the coffees and pastries were fresh ans tasty and not over priced. My only wish would be the iced coffees and chocolates would be a little larger.

We came across this lovely little cafe on our way from Kaikoura to Christchurch. Just off SH1 south of Cheviot. The coffee was excellent and the cakes ... very difficult to chose which one to have! Nice outside tables on a shady deck. Would have been great to have lunch there but it was a bit early ... next time perhaps.
