“Te Araroa Trail summer 2012”
Reviewed 20 March 2012

My husband and I have been walking the length of New Zealand on the Te Araroa Trail. It was wonderful to walk off the trail after a very long, tiring day and into a warm welcome at this lodge. Our accommodation was perfect in an ensuite unit, and Toni and Dean were both extremely helpful. They even let us use ther laundry. Toni supplied us with a delicious afternoon tea and we appreciated the little touches like a thermos of milk which was provided.

Dinner was home cooking at its very best, delicious and generous and I loved the fact that we were both served the same quantities - no discrimination here!

After a comfortable, quiet night and a great breakfast next day, we felt our batteries were recharged, and we reluctantly left this delightful place. Dean drove us around to the other side of the Rakaia River and we resumed our journey, with a fantastic packed lunch to keep the energy levels up. Every trail walker needs a night or two in luxury, and the package deal for dinner, bed, breakfast and transport was great value, we highly recommend Lake Coleridge Lodge.

I have not reviewed anything before but was so happy with our stay at Lake Coleridge Lodge that I wanted to tell others how good it is. As other reviewers have said the you get a great welcome form Toni & Dean, they really make the effort to ensure you have a good time. There are some really good walks close by & mountain biking at nearby Mt Hutt. If you are doing anything energetic get one of Toni's packed lunches, they're just the job. Should also mention we are vegetarian & Toni did us lovely food with no fuss at all. Highly recommended, great location & really good value for money, we loved it.

We escaped Christchurch for a "last minute" night stay in lake Coleridge lodge and were very happy of our choice. The place is very comfortable with all possible amenities. The evening meal was fantastic as was the breakfast. But of all, the best are the owner's kindness. They are always available to show you the best places and things to do around. As B&B owners ( in France ) ourselves we appreciate this very much. The only critic could be on the prices but i think they must be judged on NZ standards and not on French standards and of course everything is expensive in NZ so that's it ...

We decided to visit Lake Coleridge Lodge after a short stay in Christchurch. What a wonderful place to completely relax - or fish - or walk - or do whatever you decide.
Toni and Dean and great hosts, friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent, especially dinner in the evening. Superb!! One of the days we had a packed lunch to take with us on a walk, and that too was excellent. Best packed lunch we've had anywhere!!
The grounds are nice--a little 9 hole pitch and putt golf course which is a bit of fun.
Tony and Dean have plenty of information available about local activities, and are able to arrange a fishing guide if you require it.
The rooms are clean, and comfortable.
My personal highlights? The outdoor bath in the evening---under the stars--magic!! and the food, and........probably too many to mention. We loved it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the little detached unit, which was very comfortable with its own bathroom facilities...

First of all a thank you to Toni and Dean, for the lovely Time at your lodge.

- The rooms are very clean, but simple
- The food was everytime perfect, most of it is homemade
- The outside area is lovely, they have a little golf course, where u can play
- if u are a fisherman, they can help u with this aswell, they know a few good spots around the Lake Coleridge, they also know a very good fishing guide for flyfishing.

All in all u can say this is a very very lovely place to stay....

In late November wife and I were heading down the South Island via the Inland route and fortunately chose the Lake Coleridge Lodge for a stop over for two nights R&R. What a delightful surprise. We did not want to leave. This Lodge has it all. It deserves the highest 110% recommendation.

We need to qualify our comments by admission that we also own and operate a motel in another fishing resort location in the North Island, so are probably more picky than usual. My wife certainly knows what to look for with any such quality assessment of another tourist facility.

Lake Coleridge village enjoys a post-card setting in a very quiet peaceful rural mountainous fishing village location beyond the upper Rakaia River gorge surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps. The Lodge is surrounded by high country sheep stations in very picturesque surroundings.

(For any NZ'ers who have read Mona Anderson's famous book on country life - "A River Rules My Life" - this is the nearest small settlement to their remote Mount Algidus sheep station.)

While I went fly fishing for trout and salmon nearby my wife enjoyed walking the tracks through the forest around the lodge (following the map prepared by the Lodge).

We understand Toni and Dean purchased the Lodge last Easter 2011 and have stamped their mark already with many improvements starting with absolutely over the top personal service. Toni's meals were simply outstanding. Between waiting on us at meal times Dean was involved with enhancing landscaping and material improvements - i.e. to bring the sauna indoors etc. They are a great couple, well suited to this Lodge.

The Lodge was built in the 1930's and provides excellent fishing-lodge-style accommodation - warm, friendly, comfortable, at very affordable room rates. The many little extras were too numerous to list here. Being another tourist accommodation supplier, I hate to suggest this, but I believe the total meals and accommodation package was probably worth much more than they charged. For someone wanting a complete rest and recreation in the high country, without having to pay a premium, this Lodge should be first on the list.

As soon as they realised my fly fishing interests they arranged for their local fishing guide - Paddy O'Keefe - to call in and advise me what, where, when, how, why, etc. Paddy even returned with some of his special dry flies for me to use. Quite unexpected and wonderful service.

We have only one reservation - two nights were not enough. We recommend at least three or four nights to take in the majestic mountain scenery to capture the magic of the Southern Alps location.

As such we cannot recommend Lake Coleridge Lodge highly enough for excellent service and best value for money.
