We were very pleased to have been given a heads up about this place, as we may otherwise have missed them. They were only a very short walk from our hotel room and were much better than the Hermitage offerings for many reasons. We chose to eat most of our meals at Old Mountaineers during our three day stay in Mt Cook as they were so good. They offer a really comfortable, homely atmosphere with a warm fire to take the chill from your bones when retreating inside from the chilly Mt Cook air. The philosophy of this place is wonderful. Wherever possible, they aim to source fresh, local, organic produce (including organic meat). From an environmental and animal welfare perspective, I felt really good about eating here, as I make these choices for myself when at home but it is often difficult to do so whilst travelling, The food was absolutely delicious! Nothing pretencious, just good honest well prepared and cooked meals. The owner even took the time to come and have a chat to us in her own time, as she wasn't working when we were there but still cared enough to come and ask us how our meal was. If you are staying in Mt Cook, Old Mountaineers is the place to dine.

Thank you so very much for such a wonderful review. I printed it and showed it to the staff who were all thrilled. Thanks, too, for recognizing that it does take lots of effort to provide organic, local food (and less profit) for all the right reasons. We're delighted that you joined us for the three nights of your stay here at Aoraki, and you loved our welcoming atmosphere and also that you appreciated everything so much. Please do come and visit again too. M

We had one night in Mt Cook and chose to eat here based on the menu that we'd seen online. Great decision! Staff were welcoming, views were spectacular and the food was delicious. Really appreciate the commitment to using the best quality, locally sourced produce. This place really feels like it has some soul which can be a little lacking in some other Mt Cook establishments. Like some other reviewers, I would have loved this place as an alternative breakfast option (before 10am!).
