“Welcoming on a cold night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014 via mobile

Sat by the fire on a rainy night for a drink, then a lovely, unhurried meal. Good sized portions. The staff were attentive and the place was very child friendly.

“Fantastic freshly cooked local food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

Dismayed at the rip off prices at the next door Hermitage Hotel where we were staying we were delighted to find thischarming restaurant where we booked a window table with a view of the sun setting over Mount Cook.

The menu was wide, the food was local and freshly prepared and the service was great.

Thoroughly recommended.

Thank you for your positive review. Great to hear you enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the friendliness of the staff. We offer fresh produce sourced as locally as possible, much of which is organic and definitely don't have a large buffet where things are kept for many days. Enjoy your holiday.

“Great Views, Expensive Food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

As a dining experience, this one was a mixed bag. The views were outstanding but the dining was only average (and you can still see the views from outside without dining here).

I understand that itinerant backpackers make up most of the serving staff at places like this and that was reflected in the wide variety of accents and the wide variety of attitudes. Our waitress was very friendly but the waiter was surly and unhelpful. When asked what sort of pumpkin soup they were offering (you know - any spices, sweet potato or carrots - just a little bit of info), the answer was "I dunno, plain pumpkin?".

The prices were quite expensive (but everything has to get trucked in from quite a long way away) but $14 for a bowl of "plain pumpkin soup" seems a bit much. The owners seem to have tried to justify the high prices by listing everything as "organic". My "organic" hamburger was dry, not terribly tasty and cost $24. At least there was a large pile of chips to go with it. My wife opted for a steak sandwich (again, $24) and the piece of steak was tiny.

I'm not sure what the other options are for a quick lunch at Mt Cook Village but my advice would be to check them out first.

I am very pleased to see that the waitress was helpful to you, but apologize if the waiter was not up to your expectations in regard to describing the soup. The pumpkin in your large bowl of soup was organic, as was the potato that was also part of the soup. Yes, organic food is much more expensive and we take less of a profit margin to provide it to our clients. We do not try to justify our prices, which are cheaper than other places in the area, by "listing things as organic". What we state is organic, is organic. Transport is expensive, as are the government fees to operate here. The meat in your hamburger was also 100% organic, but not doused with artificial sweeteners or sauces and definitely no msg. Perhaps it did not have sufficient onion? The steak sandwich is usually large and I apologize if yours was not up to our usual high standards. It is helpful however, if you do not find things to your satisfaction, to alert the staff so they can do something constructive about it on the spot.
