“bus tour hotel”
Reviewed 27 October 2013

stayed here 1 night in october hotel is clean and staff are friendly but hotel is soul less and caters for bus tours arrived late and ate from buffet menu which had some good points and also some bad points $62 dollars each was to expensive and some things had been standing a long time and were chewy to say the least, also we sat in the large lounge after eating and the barman asked if we would like another drink to which my wife replied not at that moment , to which he promptly pulled the shutters down time 9.40pm and icing on the cake asked if free wifi but had to pay $15 dollars when even the smallest coffee shop gives free wifi

Room Tip: stay in lake tekapo and travel up to do any activities once you get to the hermitage you are isolate...

many thanks for taking the time to comment on your recent visit. It would be fair to say that a large proportion of or guests are groups from various countries, but that is normal for all tourist hotels.

we are somewhat isolated which is one of the attractions in coming to The Hermitage. I am sorry that you feel that our buffet price is high but as you may realise that being in a pristine National Park has its challenges. not only do we have to accommodate all of or employees we also have to pay a six figure sum to the government Department that oversees the park and everything is freighted in and all of our rubbish is freighted out. - such expenses as these have to be recouped in some form.

Internet charges to the hotel are also high due to the location and cost of the line, all additional expenses for this hotel which are somewhat different to operating in a City. Notwithstanding these unique expenses it is really worth coming to this special place and being so close to the Mountains and Glaciers.

The Buffet lunch in the restaurant was superb. The spread was really good, also for vegetarians. Staff very cordial. The restaurant is overlooking the Mt. Cook peak and hence the scenery is one of its kind. It was also interesting to note that the Hotel is named after Edmund Hillary, who was the first one to climb Mount Everest.

My Husband and I stayed here for 2 nights. While we had a great view from our room we were a little disappointed that you had to pay for Wifi, and excepted a bit more for the money we paid. Our room was okay but quite small and the bathrooms were tiny. You got a feel that parts of the hotel that were older and needed refreshing. We did enjoy a lovely meal at the restaurant which overlooked Mt Cook. Sadly we didn’t have great weather so couldn’t explore some of the walking tracks. It was a little sad there weren’t more "kiwis" working at the hotel. Its nice to travel to a destination and feel like your experiencing the full NZ experience!

Room Tip: No rooms service, have to pay for wifi!

We stayed here on our visit to Mount Cook. Our room faced Mount Cook. It rained the night we got there but we did see Mount Cook from our room before we checked out the next morning. The room and bathroom were modern and up to date. The bed was kingsize and very comfortable. If there is a negative, it would have to be the dining options and cost. We chose to eat early before the Cafe closed at 5:30pm. The dinner buffet was NZ$62 each. Staff was friendly. The day we arrived we drove over and did the Tasman Glacier walk. It was a steep climb but worth it.

I was lucky enough to get a standard room with a view, and what a view it is. the room was great, they even have binoculars in the room to view Mount Cook with. They are for purchase, but can be used on your stay. Room spotless, curtains are really thick so those light sleepers wont wake up with any light. No microwave in room, just a kettle and mini bar. I was going to go to the restaurant for the buffet but when informed $62.50 pp I decided my 2 minute noodles will be fine. I knew it would be expensive so I did come prepared. You can ge ta free shuttle to the backpackers in the small town, where there is meant to be nice meals, but it was too cold for us to want to venture out. Lovely stay would stay again. Reception staff were wonderful

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view.

Spectacular location, let down by the average accommodation.

Given the location I had expected more from this hotel, which unfortunately left us feeling that the hotel did not live up to the location. Rooms were OK, restaurant was acceptable, service was what you would expect from a hotel of this type.

Only reason to go back would be due to the location, close to Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier and the associated activities.

This is an iconic New Zealand hotel and we jumped at the opportunity of staying here for 1 night on a trip through from Christchurch to Queenstown. The location and views from the hotel are stunning however the accommodation is pretty run of the mill - I think, given it's history and the mountaineering history associated with this area, we'd expected something a bit more characterful. That being said, the rooms were perfectly clean and serviceable and the staff were polite and helpful.
