The Hermitage Hotel
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Stayed at the Hermitage for 2 nights last weekend. The hotel itself was quite nice, clean and a good size room (we had a premium room which they offered to us at an upgrade cost of $30/night). Unfortunately when we arrived we found out that the planetarium was not working (awaiting a part to be fixed/replaced) and with the days filled with cloud cover, there was little else to do. We had pre-booked the stargazing tour which did not proceed, so a refund of the tour was confirmed.

Overall i would stay at this hotel again for the location, however it can be hit & miss if there are weather issues, and you go solely for the purpose of visting the dark sky reserve.

Stayed here overnight with Collette Tours. Very comfortable, great views. Each room had a terrace. There was a buffet that was very good, even had sushi; huge variety for every taste bud. Disappointed that free wi-fi wasn't included.

The lodge is surrounded by mountains and there's a hiking trail that leads to an observation point about a 15-20 min walk from the lodge. Be careful if you are driving a car to this lodge, as the kea birds are in love with the rubber stripping on cars. I witness them pecking away at many guest cars.

Room Tip: You want to get a room on the front side of the lodge so that you can have spectacular views of Mt...

Probably the best hotel in the vicinity but only good for one night, just for sleeping at night and getting out fast in the morning, hotel is old and musty, very large, not quaint that one would want and expect in this location. Restaurants are best described as dinning rooms of large convention centre. Overall, expected a nice small hotel turned out to be a convention center type.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms of the aoraki wing, they have the best possible views and are expensive. Leave the c...

We overnighted at this property on our way to Queenstown.
The members of the staff were kind, knowledgeable and helpful.
Our double bed room was clean and spacious but it needs some updating!
The views of the Mountains were simply amazing and we found ourselves staring out the window and enjoying the views most of the time.
WIFI was pretty slow and expensive at about NZ$20 a day.
The food at the cafe was OK but prices were very high for the quality.
I'm not sure if there are better motels at Mount Cook but this one is OK for a short stay at this magnificent place.

We looked on tripadvisor and other sites before we booked, but on arrival it was obvious that this place hasn't been upgraded for years. Mouldy smell, small unit, poor Wi-Fi, terrible beds. We made a complaint straight away to the manager.

The way the complaint was handled was fantastic - he apologised, gave us an upgrade (but wasn't to our style as it was hotel rooms) recommended other places, even made phone calls for us to book, before refunding us the online booking. Everything took about 45 minutes and never a reluctance. Can't fault them on that at all.

So, still giving them a 3 but certainly better options in town.

We stayed in the motel unit during Easter. The units could do with some upgrading and specially in the insulation and heating department. The pane heater on a timer doesn't do the job even on a mild April night. The beds have thin mattresses and the blankets have seen better days. A little attention to upgrading the facility would not go amiss. You feel like a tourist trapped in a scheme especially with the breakfast. How many people can you squeeze into one breakfast room? I am I doubt that the fire department knows about the amount of people you put in one room. Apart from that the quality of the food is poor. In the drive to be efficient a lot of the welcoming and inviting charm you expect of a hotel has vanished. In the bar it seems that the communist style decor still has some followers. The views of the mountain from the breakfast room are spectacular. The stargazing is a wonderful experience.

When we were dropped off here in the afternoon by our bus tour,
I was worried about what we would do while we were here. This is a quieter, remote place, at least in July. We found plenty to do. The setting is so amazing! The hotel is impressive looking on the mountainside. It looks like some parts of the hotel are newer than others. Our room seemed like it was older, but had been updated nicely. The beds and bedding were great! We had a little balcony with a bench. The views from the room were incredible! There were some walking paths in a wooded area near the hotel that we enjoyed exploring. The visitors center in the village was very good and worth taking a look at.
We ate at the Panorama Room in the hotel, which was very nice with friendly waiters. Very expensive, but there wasn't any other dinner options in the hotel. We ate at the Alpine Centre Cafe for breakfast. Good selection of foods for breakfast and lunch.
There is a nice gift shop in the hotel. We bought an explorer pass which gave us access to planetarium shows and 5 movies. We really enjoyed Primeval New Zealand in a very nice theatre. We went to see a 3D show the next day before we were to leave and were told that it wasn't working . It would have been nice if when we bought the ticket we were told that. Then they could have charged us less! There is a nice exhibit/museum about Sir Edmund Hillary.
There are also more adventuresome activities available, like a helicopter ride to a glacier.
Some negatives are that there is a charge for internet use and 2% charge on credit card use. No hair dryer in the hotel room.
I am glad I got to visit the Mt. Cook area and stay at this hotel.
