A great way to understand and experience of the whole Mt Cook area. Staff are well informed and interested in providing answers to questions. A must to see when visiting Mt Cook

Very nice visitor center, tribute to the brave mountaineers of New Zealand is well worth the visit. Good souvenir spot also.

The visitor centre building is an attraction in itself, featuring a large picture window looking out to the mountain Aoraki. You can easily spend half a day exploring the artwork collection, interpretation exhibits and watching DVDs about the area.
The displays give a great description of the events that have occurred around Mt Cook.
Free entrance.
There is also a walk you can do from here.

I would strongly recommend going to this visitor centre before going on any walks in the area as you will get much better maps and information about terrain and fitness requirements than you will get at the Hermitage reception. There is much of interest here and the 6 year old loved the mounted animals and birds and the outside area to run round in. It is also an ideal place to while away some time during inclement weather. Has a good souvenir shop.

Mt Cook is a wonderful park, sheltering the highest Peak in NZ Mt. Cook itself. We were very fortunate because we had sunshine the 2 days were there and cook get a tremendous views of the mountain and surrounding peaks, valleys., rivers, lakes, etc. We hiked out to Ke Kai Point which was easy enough to do in 2 hours (there and back). We saw the fable Kea parrots, which are large and noisy. This is a wonder park and should not be missed.
