YHA Mt. Cook was a great place to stay for a couple nights while hiking around the Mt. Cook area. The rooms are clean, quiet, and affordable as always with any YHA. The kitchen is good but not enough room to accommodate everyone at the same time. The staff is super friendly and will go out of their way to help when needed.

Room Tip: Pick a 4 sleep room or less, pay the extra couple $ for it. Sleep is more important then saving a do...

Good place, just the kitchen equipment need to improve. if you can get room 15 or 16. you can see the mt cook from your private window.

my room is 17(double + single), can see the stars during the night, very good.
small village, nothing about place.

you may see some interesting people.

Room Tip: good enough for the price

YHA Mt Cook is a good value for money accomodation just at the entrance of the village. The rooms are basic but clean. There are not many showers available so you have to be one of the first (or last).
The best rooms are at the 2nd floor (less noise).

The centre of the village and DOC are both within walking distance (20 min). Start point of the hiking tracks (Tarns, Hooker Valley, Mueller's Hut) are 50 minutes away. Both the centre and hiking tracks can easily be reached by car in a few minutes. Parking is for free.

Tip: bring your own food (there is no supermarket and the prices at the hostel and other restaurants are overrated).
Fuel up your vehicle before, also the petrol prices are very expensive.

We stayed in a private room with a double and a single bed. No ensuites so we with a shared bathroom with a couple of other rooms on the same floor. I can recommend this hostel mainly due to its location in Mount Cook village surrounded by the most stunning scenery and the perfect launch pad for beautiful walks to see local lakes and glaciers. Couple of excellent cafes and restaurants nearby too. Staff were really friendly and helpful when I had problems with my mobile phone. Its a long time since I have stayed in a YHA and I found the kitchen area a bit grubby and the whole hostel a bit 'well worn' BUT the beds were comfy and the bathrooms clean, and it had a handy little shop, so considering the price of other accommodation, it was a really good place to stay. I was with friends but like all hostels it seemed a great place for a solo traveller to meet and socialise with like minded folk.

We stayed in a triple room and a shared a common bathroom at YHA Mt Cook. It was clean and comfortable with very friendly and helpful staff. It was a very scenic drive to Mt Cook and we recommend others to stay here.

Stunning views welcome you from the upper rooms of the hostel. You quickly forgive the rotten water pressure in the area. Wifi was not working at the time, so check before you arrive. Clean and tidy. No ensuite rooms available, so you have to be patient with the irritating visitors who wish to take an hour in the bathroom. The area is magnificent, food is expensive but good. Maybe bring your own groceries. It's a shared fridge space, a large kitchen.

Room Tip: Take the upstairs rooms with a view. Double with a single. It's worth that little but more.

Whether you enjoy your stay depends on the weather and your food resources. We stayed here for 8 nights as hostel cleaning volunteers. THERE IS NO SUPERMARKET ON SITE! If you stay here you need a car to go to the next town to go shopping or stay here for a short time. Other than that the views are amazing surrounded by snow capped mountains and there are plenty of walks to go on. Again if you desire to see the Tasman Glacier you need a car as it took us 1 hour and a half to walk 1/3 of the way. The hostel it's self was quite good. The room was spacious and the noise was quiet all the time we stayed. They have a DvD catalogue which is vast and a good plus on a rainy day. The staff were really helpful and friendly and the kitchen + dining area was large and very clean.
