“A good alternative to the main offerings”
Reviewed 11 September 2011

It was good to discover that there's now an alternative to the main offerings at Mount Cook Village, and this lodge did not disappoint. It was a comfortable place to stop the night, and you have easy access to all of the restaurants in the village. There are also some self-catering facilities (which we did not use). Friendly and welcoming.

This nice little cozy lodge is right in front of Mt Cook i-site, a very convenience location. When we arrived late at 9pm, the reception is waiting for us still and has the room warm up for us. Because this is not a tourist season so two of us own the whole comfortable lounge & kitchen room at night. Views from our room window and the lounge are breathtaking. The place is new (built in 2006) and clean. Although we booked only one night, later we decided to stay here another night because we really enjoy staying here.

Stayed here for one night, and really liked it. It may not be as luxurious as the nearby Hermitage, but is perfect for a short stay with friends. Check-in was quick and very friendly. Rooms were clean and warm. One of the rooms had a bigger LCD tv and a sofa, where we played a DVD rented from reception.

The kitchen and lounge are quite spacious and well maintained, with spectacular views. There are some books and games kept there as well, and a PC with internet connection. Be prepared to wash the dishes after you eat though :)

Hermitage activity center is just a cpl of minutes walk away. You can get some basic food items in the lodge, or at Hermitage. So carry your own groceries, or eat in one of the 2-3 restaurant/cafes in the area.

Room Tip: Room number 6 is bigger than rest of single bedroom units.

Cheaper than nearby Hermitage, this accommodation is a perfect choice if you realize that the reason to be around Mount Cook is to be around it... outside! The rooms of Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Lodge are relatively small, although comfortable. The main feature of that hotel is the common room on the second floor, from which the view is stunning.

We stayed here for two nights. The accommodations are basic -- a rack instead of a closet; small TV, tiny complimentary soap -- but the area is fantastic. We spent the day hiking around the area, which was covered with frozen snow and gorgeous. We brought our own food, using the kitchenette to prepare breakfast and the larger, much better equipped communal kitchen upstairs to prepare dinner. It can get a little crazy with multiple families preparing meals at once, so plan to each a little early or a little late. The only complaints I have are nitpicks -- very slow internet, with a service that deducts 20 minutes of time for every 5 minutes you are on. (This is not the lodge's fault or responsibility). The shower force could be a little stronger. And the next time the lodge does an upgrade it should consider putting a coat of wall over the paint. The walls all around are very thin, and you can even hear talking in the next room. We were blessed with considerate guests as neighbors, so it really wasn't an issue. We booked here instead of the better know Hermitage because the reviews were so poor about the Hermitage, and we'd stay here again without a second thought.

Room Tip: Upstairs has the better view
