“Beautiful view!”
Reviewed 4 January 2011

I loved this hotel for quite a few reasons. Firstly, we arrived here really late beacuse we drove down all the way from Christchurch and stopped at Lake Tekapo on our way over. We still found our key left at the reception for us. The room was small yet very cosy and comfortable.

Secondly, the view was just phenomenal. We could see the snow capped mountains towering above right in front of us. It was a view to die for! Also, The Hermitage was just a 5-minute walk away and we strolled over to book our activities for the next day.

Thirdly, I loved the huge communal kitchen. There was so much crocklery and cutlery and such ample space that it was very comfortable. We cooked both our dinner and the next day's breakfast there.

We were pleasantly surprised with how nice the lodgings were here! We had a double bed, bunk bed, flat screen TV, bathroom, etc., and there was also a common room with a huge kitchen and lounge for cooking and eating. It had all of the conveniences of a hostel with all of the cleanliness and niceness of a hotel. It was also a perfect location for hiking or exploring Mt. Cook Village. The lounge area had an amazing view of Mt. Cook.

The room is okay for a lodge but the shower area in the bathroom was terrible. It's not tiled nor enclosed. So, when you shower, your whole bathroom floor will be wet. I know some of the rooms come with a shower area because our relatives' room comes with an enclosed shower area. Perhaps you can request one when you make your reservation. The bed was too soft for me. There's no screen on your window so when you open the window, bugs will fly in. The room gets really stuffy when it's warm. It's a basic room with coffee/tea maker only. No closet. Just a hand rail to hang your clothes/jackets. There are only 4 hangers. There's one washing machine and one dryer. It's coin operated and you buy the soap from the receptionist. Be careful with the tap water. My husband and I got upset stomach from drinking their water so we ended up buying bottle water the entire 3 nights we stayed there. Nice lounge and kitchen area upstairs. Apparently people steal food so they have a camera installed in the kitchen/lounge area. Better just eat in cafes by the village. Wifi connection for a cheap price. They also have 1 computer for a fee.

I liked this hotel, because the view was fantastic and the price a million times better than The Hermitage. The staff were friendly and it is very close to everything. The bed was not very comfortable and the room was pretty small. Otherwise a good place to stay.

Great place and an alternative to the hotel which dominates this resort. Friendly staff.

The fabulous weather and great views may have influenced my review but even so this is a wonderful lodge if you don't like large hotels. The staff couldn't have been nicer and more accomodating and the lay out of the lodge led to getting to know other guests which I find interesting. The rooms are fine but there is a common room with a full kitchen and a magnifient view of Mt. Cook. We spent most of our free time in this room either eating, drinking, looking at the view or playing games.

Good facilities. Take your own food/drink to self-cater. Good cafe nearby. Superb location.
