Had an amazing weekend here , the room was fantastic, staff very very friendly, pleasant and helpful, food was magnificent, I can't praise this place enough!!
Even as we were leaving I was planning our next visit back!!
My only criticism it was over too quickly!!!

We found the hotel amd staff to be charming There are bucolic views from the terrace. We enjoyed watching the cows going home in the evening. Eric Marsh, the long time hotelier, seemed to greet and chat with every guest giving his printed instructions for a drive in the Peak District to anyone who was interested. Our room was excellent if a bit of a hike from the bar and dining room. However, we had only reserved the afternoon of our stay so we can't complain. Nice touch of cold milk for tea in the room. The breakfast was outstanding in a land of many good breakfasts. We ate in the less expensive of the two serving dinner. We don't recall it as outstanding but pleasant.

If you fancy a trip to the Peak District and want a comfortable base, this is it. It's a long low building on a busy road but all the bedrooms, some of which are a bit of a camel ride from Reception, face farmland and hills with Chatsworth House and park a mile or so beyond, but sadly not visible. The rooms were well furnished and the big beds were comfortable, but you may want to ask for softer pillows, and the plumbing facilities were modern and efficient. There are two places to eat, a cafe and a smart dining room. The food at dinner was interesting and tasty at both. Breakfast was all a man, or woman, could desire. The scrambled eggs and local bacon were bang on. Service was friendly and efficient, while not too rushed. We were out of season so we received plenty of attention. Buxton and its Festival are less than half an hour away, so a good place to be based - but book early to avoid...

Room Tip: To be safe, ask for a room overlooking the farmland at the far end of the building then your view wi...

Stayed here on a Saturday night in January in a superior double (room 10, one of the Inn rooms). Easy to find with plenty of parking. All of the staff were friendly and helpful - one staff member spotted us in the car park and came to take our bags in for us, which was a nice touch.

The room has a four poster bed and view over the estate - very pretty (though don't expect to see Chatsworth House from here!). Normally I avoid rooms with more 'traditional' decor and particularly avoid hotels which put teddy bears on the bed... but the room was reasonably spacious, with 2 sofas, table, TV, four poster bed, and a bathroom with bath and separate shower. It was nice for a change, but only because we got a cheaper price for staying in the off-season (the standard tariff for this room is £219/night which seems a bit much in my opinion).

We had dinner in the Garden Room as the more formal restaurant was largely empty. Food was good (I recommend the sea bream and gnocchi, and my partner much enjoyed his steak) and service was friendly and attentive to the right amount. We didn't have breakfast in the morning so can't comment on that.

I would say that this hotel has a slightly relaxed, older vibe - it was mostly couples in their 60s-70s when we stayed. We enjoyed our one night's stay (as a couple in our 20s-30s) but probably wouldn't stay for any longer than that.

My husband and I, together with our 2 best friends, decided to treat ourselves and stay at the Cavendish to celebrate the bringing in of the 2014

We last stayed at the Cavendish 9 years ago and loved it, could it still be as good we wondered? Earlier this year we stayed in 2 other hotels owned by this group, The Devonshire Fell for the wonderful wedding of our daughter and the Devonshire Arms (Bolton Abbey) as a treat after the wedding.

The Cavendish did not let us down and we had the most wonderful time, from the moment we arrived on New Years Eve afternoon until we left on the 2nd January. The service was outstanding the food superb and the accommodation every bit as good as we remembered, better in fact as there have been refurbishments done since our last visit. We had booked 2 superior Inn rooms in the main building and they were beautiful overlooking the Chatsworth estate - beautifully dressed, spotlessly clean with bathroom to match.

The 7 course tasting menu on New Years Eve was outstanding and I have to say congratulations to the chef – I am a vegetarian and my meal was wonderful, usually I often have problems when staying in hotels (even Michelin star establishments) not so here, every consideration was given to my meal and I enjoyed it immensely as I know the rest of the party enjoyed theirs.

We would highly recommend this hotel in our opinion more comfortable and more intimate than either the Fell or the Abbey. In fact we have already told numerous people about this wonderful gem!

Room Tip: Go for a superior Inn room
