We specifically booked this hotel for it's lovely views. We booked a Superior room (offering stunning views) and was looking forward to our time in this lovely location after spending a couple of days in London first. On Arrival we found our room wasn't ready, no problem we had coffee in the Lounge. When our room was ready we were shown to our room, as soon as we were taken out of the hotel and taken round the side of the hotel (into car park )my heart started to sink. The hotel had kindly upgraded us to a suite, but it had no view at all and overlooked the car park and the noisy road. We went straight to reception and asked for our original booking as for us (and celebrating our 30th wedding Anniversary) is was all about the view and looking over the Chatsworth estate. Unfortunately we didn't find the owner helpful at all and said they were full, but we could move for 1 night, but would have to move the next day. This wasn't helpful to us. The food was very good in the restaurant and the location is lovely, but please state when booking you want a room with a view so you will not be disappointed as we were.

This is only a review of the garden room restaurant lunch which was very good, if there was a query it was the mackerel tart, technically correct as a tart but not what was expected, just a piece of fish on a slab of pastry, still tasted ok. Well worth a visit just for the location.

Decided to visit here for lunch after a cafe in Eyam was closed despite stating it was open on its web site, but that did us a good turn as I decided to have the afternoon tea and believe me those scones are some of the best I have tasted and with the view over the fields what more could you want on a summers day, a real feel good experience.

I have visited The Cavendish on many occasions and this is the first time I have been disappointed with the experience. I visited on a Sunday afternoon with four other ladies for a bite to eat and although the staff were very friendly and polite they just didn't seem organised. We were shown to our table in the Garden Room and subsequently placed our order with the waitress. We ordered sandwiches, a mixture of egg, prawn, salmon, ham etc, all on wholemeal. The waitress soon returned to inform us that they had run out of eggs and wholemeal bread - sorry, but these are items that should be readily available at all times. We all agreed to have white bread and one guest chose another filling. The sandwiches arrived which were ok, nothing special. One guest couldn't eat the bread as it was too doughy - they did deduct this from the bill. On to hot drinks, we ordered a mixture of teas and coffees which arrived at different times and the coffee was served in tea cups and my tea saucer was actually a side plate! I maybe nick picking but this isn't the service you expect from such an upmarket hotel and restaurant - to be honest it was more like Fawlty Towers on this visit. I will more than likely visit again as it is such a lovely setting.

I've stayed in some really great contemporary English hotels over the last couple of years, really starting to break the mold of poor value and old fashioned that has typically characterised hotels in this country. Unfortunately, the Cavendish is not one of them.

Cavendish has a distinctly mature feel to it, we were the only couple below 50 I'd say. While it is indeed very close to Chatsworth, this is not particularly relevant when you're in the Peak District as you're going to be driving around for walks and dining etc anyway. There is no view of the House in any case.

I booked a superior double. Room was very good, nice four poster bed and spacious. Seemed recently refurbished. However, the bathroom was basic and in no way luxurious, and the window didnt stay open. After wedging it wide open with a desk drawer (!) and turning off the radiators, it was still very hot in the room all night.

On arrival we ate in the 'Garden Room' which felt distinctly 2-star. The awful bottled jazz muzak in the background was a game-over moment for me - how can any great hotel GM approve that music?? The next night we ate in the main restaurant, where the food was great, and the setting very nice. No complaints at all there.

Apologies if this comes across negative - the hotel is good. However it's certainly not great, and there was nothing about it that really stood out for me. I spent the equivalent of a return plane ticket to Kenya on our 2 night stay + dinner + two breakfasts (basic buffet is unbelievably not included), and believe me I'd be happy to spend that on a memorable hotel, but Cavendish, you just ain't got it.

Other UK countryside hotels are really starting to outperform on food and room features without charging eye-watering prices. The Wheatsheaf Inn in the Cotswolds comes to mind. I was hoping that the Cavendish would be like that but unfortunately it's firmly rooted in the old guard.

Room Tip: Room 10 is great - large, great bed, but make sure they open the window properly for you!

My wife and I stayed at the Cavendish Hotel on July 29 & 30, 2014. We had a wonderful time. The hotel is charming with a great location; walking distance to the Chatsworth Estate. We also took a bike ride on the Monsol Trail which is an old rail right of way that has been converted into a bike path. This is less than 10 minutes by car from the Cavendish. The trail is very scenic and flat. It is a great way to burn a few calories after eating the wonderful food at the Cavendish. The Peak District area where this is located is as beautiful as a postcard. More grazing sheep than people. To reach the Peak District, plan on about a 4 hour drive Northwest of London. If you are looking for something picturesque outside of the big city, this is the place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Chatsworth Estate.
