“Not enough Veggie!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

This is a lovely hotel to stay in. It is run by a lovely bunch of people who are extremely helpful and happy. Our only downside for us was the minimal selection of vegetarian food. The waiter said they'd change stuff around to try and accomodate us, but we couldn't really see how you can do that with steak and ale pie or sausages!
My husband had the only veggie thing - haloumi - which was okay, but it wouldn't have been his first choice. I would recommend the Devonshire mezze - it was delicious! Not a scrap was left. I occasionally eat fish so went for the fish and chip option which I never do because I prefer it in paper!!! The food was expensive £14 for fish and chips, but have to say - very nice indeed.
Breakfast was amusing when asked if we wanted full English and we mentioned we were vegetarian, the look of horror on the young man's face - bless him said - we have continental or salmon with scrambled egg!! We had poached egg on toast and asked for tomatoes to be added. All of this to the loud jazz playing in the background - very funny!!
Our room was small and compact. Had to move the kettle to the floor to make a cuppa as powerpoint too far away from table. Toilet is almost in the sink!! But it was clean and for one night, not a problem. (room 4) For us the heating was a problem as it was on full sauna heat - the hallway was scorching! We needed the window wide open all night to try and cool off. No radiator in our room - so where was the intense heat coming from?
All in all, would return for a night.

We stayed here and went to a wedding at a nearby Hotel. We ate a sandwich in 'Hatties' a coffee shop part of the Pub. This was as good as I have had anywhere, with quick friendly service.

The accommodation room was on the ground floor. It is only an ordinary size bed, and very uncomfortable. The bedding was old and lumpy. The decorations are very drab and the room just didn't feel clean. I didn't go around every nook and cranny so it probably was perfectly acceptable, it was just the general feel. The bathroom ceiling had large patches of flaky paint, the bath/shower had a thick layer of mould in the grouting. The shower screen was too short so water just pours onto the floor.

The windows do open fully, which is an improvement on a certain other chain of hotels. Unfortunately that reveals a thick black layer of mould around the edges.

Having pointed out the failings, I am told the room is due for refurbishment. It can't come soon enough. The competition out there is fierce and in its present condition I cannot recommend the rooms at the Devonshire Arms, Baslow.

Room Tip: Don't have room 2

Impulsively stopped here as we were after a pub for a family Sunday lunch.

It's located in a beautiful village - Baslow, and it's an ideal location to walk to Chatsworth House.

Very warm and comfortable inside with friendly, helpful staff.
Lovely Sunday lunch and an overall great experience - would definitely go back again.

The Devonshire Arms correctly describes itself as an "inn+kitchen" (The lower case is deliberate). It is a pub-restaurant, with 12 hotel rooms in a newish extension at the back. The hotel side feels like something of an afterthought, but could easily be brought up to the standard of the rest.

You "check-inn" at the bar. Service is invariably quick, friendly and informal (jeans+trainers or jogging pants+pumps), and dining (in the bar or the roundhouse restaurant) is on bare wooden tables with the cutlery in a small bucket. The style is informal English pub-restaurant, and the food we had was excellent - generally served promptly, with large helpings properly cooked on the premises. This pub prides itself on its kitchen. The menu has the usual English classics (steak and ale pie, fish and chips etc.), clearly a notch above the standard centralised offering in the corporate pub-chains. The same goes for the full English breakfast grill - cooked to order, not pre-cooked before dawn and left to wallow above spirit burners or hot plates. But in other respects the breakfast offering was below industry standard; the only cereals were Kellogg's and Weetabix, there was no cold buffet (which continental or US visitors might have wanted), no yogurts, the fruit bowl was not replenished for later breakfasters, and (crucial for us), orange marmalade made only an intermittent appearance. It should be a fixed part of a proper English breakfast.

The room we had was adequate, but as the staff admitted, the rooms are awaiting refurbishment by the comparatively new management. Meanwhile, interim improvements should include EITHER towel rails OR unbroken hooks to hold towels with proper loops along the longer side so they do not drag on the floor. Our room had none of these. Towels would then not need to be replaced daily, with environmental benefits. Our rather dark room would also have been improved by a light on the dressing table.desk, and the hospitality tray should these days carry decaffeinated coffee and hot chocolate sachets. A toiletries tray in the bathroom would also help bring the room up to standard.

Overall, the Devonshire Arms is a pretty good pub-restaurtant for those happy with cheerful youthful informality, and very well located for Chatsworth and the eastern Peak District. But the hotel side (rooms and breakfast) needs to smarten up its act

I have been to the Devonshire Arms a few times for food and the latest meal was so nice that I felt it needed a good review. The service was excellent as was the food, well presented and extremely tasty! Will be back to try the Sunday dinner menu soon.

Stayed for one night whilst meeting up with friends in the area.
Nice bar area and a separate coffee shop frequented by the locals as well as those visiting the beautiful Peak District and nearby Chatsworth.
I felt the room rate was alittle expensive but mainly because I was a single occupant.
Had a few drinks in the bar during the evening, bar staff quick to serve you and friendly, also had a snack which was nice and fairly good value.
Room was quite nice with a few country rustic touches, clean and with a nice en-suite, tv, kettle etc. Had a good nights undisturbed sleep.
Nice well served breakfast next morning in the dining room, full English, fruit cereals etc...
Enjoyed the stay.

Room Tip: One to the rear of the building away from the road
