Hotel Restaurant Les Etagnes

Reviewed 18 February 2014 via mobile

This will be my third year visiting Onno and Annemieke, three years ago staying at their lovely hotel, enjoying their warm Dutch hospitality, restaurant and down to earth atmosphere! The couple went out of their way to make us feel at home, with a birthday cake for one of my boys and arranging for a pair of kids ski's I had forgotten to be returned to Holland, no questions asked! Last year I was too late booking a room however we came over from La Tzoumaz to celebrate my son's birthday again! It's been written in other reviews but the restaurant at Les Etagne is devine! This year, yes unfortunately I was late again however, being just across the road from Les Etagne and my daughter's specific wish to have dinner at Les Etagne,
I managed to book a table. She's looking forward to the snails already Annemieke!
Next year I'm hoping to book one of their apartments whom are equally well situated right next to the Telecabine and the last bit of slope! Their private car park even has some indoor parking if your lucky. The Cheers Après Ski bar starts filling up from about 5:00 pm and when sunny, there is great lunch seating outside overlooking the mountain! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night Onno and Annemieke!

Hotel Les Etagnes is next door to the ski slopes and main ski lift - so a perfect location. Recently refurbished to a very high standard, the en-suite rooms are lovely, decor pristine and showers hot and powerful. More than that, the food is delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast is varied and plentiful, and the lunchtime and evening menus offer something scrumptious for every palate.

The service is second to none. The owners, Annamieke and Onno take great personal care to make sure that you are very well looked after - nothing is too much trouble, and all their staff exhibit the same high service values.

Over the years we have stayed in many hotels and chalets in ski resorts, and Les Etagnes is one of the best. We'll be back!

the first time, it was a Tuesday night. we didn't want to go far, so we walked the short distance to this hotels restaurant and were more than glad we had. it was quiet (but so was most of Nendaz) but the restaurant still felt cosy. Whilst only a small menu, there was still a lot of choice. so much so that we each picked 2 starters and 2 mains we wanted to try so decide we would just have to come back. this night I had the scallops and them steak. the second time I had the beef carpaccio and filo parcels followed by roasted whole poussin. all of it delicious.
Outside there is an "umbrella bar" so you could ski to the après bar at the end of the day (it's next to the main cable car) drink for a couple of hours and then go straight in to dinner!
when we go back to Nendaz (as we surely will) I'll be sure to visit again.

What a great trip. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and we wanted to try somewhere we had never been before. My wife and I both ski and, for no better reason than I did a school report in 4th grade on Swiss cheese, we decided to try the Alps in Switzerland. Being from the US, did not have much to go on, as most of our friends ski New England or out west. Got a lead from my sister about this town we had never heard of called Nendaz and spoke highly of the skiing. A travel arranger out of England sent Les Etanges hotel as one of the choices for us to consider. Taking the advice off of TripAdvisor, we booked our trip to stay here, not knowing much more than what was posted here.

What a trip. Overnight flight from Newark to Geneva, step onto the train at the airport. Two hours of a beautiful morning train ride around the lake into the alps to Sion station. Fifteen minutes later on time (it is Switzerland after all), bus from the station up to the gondola station and the hotel. No need for a rental car.

Onno and Annemieke were the best hosts. Onno worked non-stop from the great continental breakfast through to apre-ski at the Cheers Umbrella Bar to the Les Etanges Restaurant at night. Annemieke's meals in the restaurant were fantastic. Her beef carpaccio is one of the best we have ever had. Nice selection of Swiss wines (which we have to hunt for here in the US).

Our room was on the second floor, overlooking the Cheers bar next to the gondola for Nendaz ski resort. Closest we ever we for ski on/ski-off-into-the-bar, restaurant, and hotel (usually in that order). The Cheers Bar gets rolling with Jappy behind the bar with a flat screen for sports (one night, English Rugby vs. Switzerland in some tennis doubles match led to some cheering back and forth; might want to add a second screen to avoid conflicts). The Cheers scene gets into high gear, with the music filling the neighborhood, but by bedtime, it is shut down and quiet, so not a problem. The rooms are cozy and clean. The only complaint about our room was the Sno-Cats grooming the trails early at sunrise if they had to, but hey, if that's the only complaint one has.... ;-)

Nendaz is a bustling town. They are finishing up building anymore hotels and the like. Spent one bad weather day walking around town, enjoying a great lunch and shopping. No celebrities, no super fancy cars, no Verbier. Which we enjoyed very much. The ski resort is based at the top of the gondola and caters to skiing families quite well. Highly recommend springing for the 4 Valles pass so you can ski out the back bowl at Nendaz into Siviez and access to Verbier itself. Shuttle buses can get you there as well. Do go to the top of Mont Fort for the view and great ski down.

Our thanks to everyone at Les Etanges for making this a truly memorable trip. We hope to make it back there soon.

Room Tip: There are not a lot of rooms here. Our corner room overlooked the ski area and bar, but quiet at ni...

I recently visited Nendaz with my 16 year old son for a 4 day ski vacation. We have been to Verbier last year and Nendaz is quite different, though part of the same ski area (4 Valleys). Where Verbier is the trendy spot, Nendaz is much more the spot for devoted skiers and families. The town is not nearly as commercial, though the level of construction is enormous so it may be headed in this direction. The number of hotels and restaurants is limited but the Hotel Les Etagnes is terrific. It is <100m from the gondola and is as close to ski in-ski out as is possible. The rooms are not particularly large (and there is no telephone!) but the quality of the construction of the building and the materials used throughout the room is first rate. We had a room on the top floor facing the hill and so we had a smallish window and a skylight. The room had two single beds that could be made into a double and a sofa that also served as a single so it was an ideal spot for a couple with a child or two adults or an adult and child. There is no elevator so this is probably not the place for anyone whose mobility is limited but for us it was perfect. They have a ski room to store the equipment and a parking garage for the car.
The owners are Dutch and are clearly a part of the community. They make a real effort. They are very welcoming and relaxed. It has a family atmosphere with conversation between tables and guests. The breakfast was more than ample and they provide warm food such as eggs, in addition to the buffet. The only thing I would improve was more fresh fruit.
We ate half board a few nights and again the food was of high quality and the quantity was outstanding. Even an active and hungry 16 year old was full after the meal. The owners were also quite accommodating if one menu item on the half board was not suitable (my son switched desserts without any problem at all).
I liked the Cheers bar. It had the potential to be noisy but in fact it was closed down at a reasonable hour so that it had no effect on our sleep. It was a very popular spot right after the end of the ski day up till dinner time.
Overall a wonderful stay. Prices were very reasonable (not just considering this is Switzerland) but just plain reasonable. I hope they stay that way as the town develops! I would be more than happy to return and would like to experience the town and the hotel/restaurant in summer as well.

We stayed at this hotel during the New Year's Eve in 2012-2013. Les Etagnes is a small hotel, with just 8 rooms. It has a great apres ski and is located right near the cable. It has a sauna, which is free to use. The owners are great people. The food is great, even if they don't have a lot of dishes in the menu. Our vacantion was great and for sure we will come back to this hotel next time when we'll go to ski in Valais.

We stayed at this hotel in low season, having always used apartments previously in the resort. Ski in, ski out - great location. We can only speak highly of the friendly and efficient service. The breakfast was extensive and although we normally use a range of restaurants, the food was so good we ate at the hotel 3 nights out of five.
We had to leave early on the final day, and the hotel provided a tasty picnic breakfast that we ate on the train journey to the airport - a big thank you to all the staff, Onno, Annemieke and their lovely family.
We will return for another short break in the not too distant future.
Highly recommended!
