Number 5 Castillo Mar.
Our first impression of number 5 Castillo Mar was very bad; on arrival we were greeted by chairs that were ripped and threadbare before we even got inside, this made us feel ashamed to be staying there. Once inside the whole place had a shoddy feel about it and the windows were dirty and smeared. It was made worse by the fact that the downstairs toilet wasn’t working and when we went to go outside, the backdoor handle dropped onto the floor! We didn’t expect 5 star accommodation but at the very least we expected it to be clean, and it wasn’t. If we had only booked for a week we would not have stayed, but we were a long time stay so had to make the most of it.
The cockroach problem was awful. My husband had a cockroach crawling up his back and also one crawling up his arm. I experienced one dropping off the wall onto the table while I was eating and refused to eat downstairs again for the whole of our stay. We found no cockroaches upstairs. Even after extensive spraying we still had about two or three a night. To try and get rid of them we looked up what to do on the Internet. We read that the first step was to make the place immaculately clean, and as I have already said it wasn’t, and also to fill any holes so that they couldn’t get in. We set about cleaning the place properly – cleaning cupboards and scrubbing the doors, scrubbing the toilet door and frame, which was really dirty. We pulled all the furniture into the middle of the room and scrubbed the floor – again it was very dirty behind and on top of the freezer. As my husband was scrubbing the floor the kick board came away from the kitchen units. Under there can only be described as filthy! We counted 15 cockroaches in various stages from dead, dying or alive, it was horrible! At this point my husband phoned the agent to complain.
We felt the holiday wasn’t organized properly either. We were booked for 2 months and weren’t even given a change of sheets or towels, we had to phone and ask for them. We had to have workmen out twice to mend the upstairs toilet, the cistern was held together with a plastic bottle top! And two days before we were due to return the cooker stopped working. We spent over 50 euros on cleaning materials and cockroach spray, plus clothes to disinfect and plug up the holes.
The place did have some good points, the washing machine, freezer and full oven were all good and no complaints about the upstairs, which had a lovely balcony. It was also in a good position, close to the pool and sun bathing area. But the rest of it was bad and the whole of the downstairs was in need of decorating. The worse parts being the cockroaches, the dirt and the ripped up chairs. This was not as seen, or described on Owner’s Direct.
Don’t let this one holiday letting put you off staying at Castillo Mar, there were some really nice units. I personally was shown around numbers 4,6,7 and 70, which were all really nice. The people were so nice too and very helpful – thanks go to Jimmy for mending the door handle. The pool was nice and never crowded and they have a good selection of books in a library at the side of the reception area. It was quiet and felt secure at night; it was also close to shops and restaurants, but be careful which accommodation you choose.
