“A week in Fuerteventura”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

We have just returned from an all inclusive holiday (2 adults, & 2 children - 7 & 6 years old) at this resort. The holiday was booked through Thompson & the flights were from Luton. Our first impressions of the resort were poor. We arrived late in the evening & the woman on the reception did not wish to look up to help us. She eventually roused herself to assist us & we booked in.

The hotel complex is massive & we had to wait about 15 minutes for a porter to show us to our bungalow, which we carried our own bags to. There was no gulf buggy to assist as there are at many other hotels. When we eventually got to the room we were disappointed. The kid’s bed (which was on a pull out couch) was not made up. There were stains on the upholstery of the chairs & the shower smelled awful when it was turned on (like a drain had broken..) We managed to move rooms during our stay & the other room we had was much better.

Our holiday was planned around the children as all they want to do is swim during the day, & enjoy the mini disco in the evening. The pool areas however are very busy. We found it difficult to get a sun bed with a parasol unless you were up early each day. The pool water is sea water which is not great to swim in & there seemed to be dozens of missing tiles from each pool.

The restaurant area was also very busy. The atmosphere therefore is not relaxing & the staff are stretched to make sure there are enough clean made up tables with cutlery (which there were not). The food was OK but there could have been a wider variety to choose from.

The evening entertainment for the kids was OK - they enjoyed the mini disco which was held in the newly opened Theatre. The entertainment for the adults in the evening was average. The theatre although very new & has been hastily finished with a small bar area it became very crowded.

Overall I found the resort to be disappointing. The hotel construction was continuing whilst we were there. The general finish of the work is however poor because it is rushed, as fixtures around the hotel such as doors, locks handles & windows etc were not fitted properly.

We had a great holiday last year in Lanzarote (Hotel Castillo) & we found ourselves comparing that experience with this recent one. We will not be returning to Fuerteventura, but good luck if you decide to go there!

We returned yesterday after a 2 week, All Inclusive break - 2 adults, 2 children aged 10 and 11.

We asked for a room with a beach view and close to facilities as my husband had only just recovered from surgery on both feet. That is exactly what we got. A beautiful Apt with large terrace overlooking the stunning beach/bay.

The large terrace had 2 private sunbeds and table/chairs. The rooms were modern and clean with maid service everyday. It was our anniversary whilst we were there and staff surprised us with a bottle of bubbly and a personal cake to celebrate (a lovely touch). The bungalows and apartments are set in well maintained, beautiful, tropical gardens.

Food was plentiful with an innumerable choice of dishes to suit all palettes (this just about worked for one of our Daughters who is a very fussy eater). Although it was at full capacity we still found a table at every sitting without having to queue. The pool areas were large and never seemed too busy as there are 5 different pools around the complex with sunbeds around each one. We were pleasantly surprised to be able to get sunbeds even after lunch. The downside to the pools is that they are all saltwater, which really is horrible and this was not welcomed.

Entertainment was the usual acts to suit the diverse needs of the multi nationals visiting the complex. The Animation team tried really hard, and although our girls felt too old to join in the Kids Club, it was there if you wanted to use it.

The evening bar is at the very end of the complex next to the Harbour and although the staff were very polite, friendly and helpful there were simply just not enough of them to cover the numbers of holiday makers, resulting in long queues at the bar at peak times. This didn't particularly cause us a problem though.

The complex is under going a full refurb (something Jet 2 omitted to inform us of) and as a result the pool areas are not as well kept as they should be. Tiles missing all around the pools, both on the sides and the bottom, sand a grit on the bottom of the pool. The missing tiles did cause a number of stubbed toes during our stay. That said I cannot say it ruined our holiday and we loved the place.

We would love to come back after the full refurb to see what it will be like then, however, that said I would recommend this place even in it's current state as it is still a beautiful place to stay and we had a wonderful family holiday.

I could not warrant a 5/5 simply because there are areas in need of attention even though this did not affect our overall enjoyment of the holiday.

Thank you Barcelo Castilo Beach Resort. :-)

Room Tip: Block 2000's are the seaview rooms. Our room 2062 was right on the front - stunning views.

We are currently staying at this complex. When we arrived we were checked into an occupied room,we had to return to check in and get a new room. The new room is very run down looking, hardly any light in room and room smells of dampness.
The all inclusive is an experience where some bars you have to actually pay for all drinks. I have asked for bottled water in our room as we have two young children and we were told "no you have to pay" we have took our issues up with reception but they were not interested in the slightest.

The entertainment is mostly aimed at the French. My oldest, who is 7 is not enjoying this trip at all. The theatre where the entertainment is held is crazy. They have about 8 waiter staff serving people who are paying or who are not all inclusive and they only have one person serving for the all inclusive guests, and you can imagine the queue is long.
All in all it's the worst all inclusive we have ever been too.

Stayed at the Barcelo Castillo Beach Resort with extended family 6 adults and 4 children (aged 5, 7, 10 & 12) two weeks. Booked 3 one bedroom Self-Catering apartments with Thomas Cook as we preferred to try local restaurants rather than staying all inclusive. The 3 rooms are allocated close together in the 5000 block. The rooms were spacious open plan with two single beds and one sofa bed, kitchenette, walk in shower and a separate toilet. The rooms were very modern well maintained and kept very clean. The maids cleaned the room daily, mopping the floor, cleaning the shower, sinks and toilet. Beds were changed every 3 days and towels replaced when left on the shower floor. We found the room was lovely however personally I'd suggest the rooms in the 5000 block are not entirely suitable for a family of four with older children. The room is more than adequate for 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child or maybe 2 younger children simply due to the width of the sofa bed. As we had two older children (ages 10 & 12) we asked reception if we could have a put up bed this wasn't available but we were kindly given several options to better accommodate our family of four including a room in the 2000 block which had two twin beds in a separate bedroom, a sofa bed which converted into two single beds within a separate lounge, kitchenette, bathroom with shower over a bath and two large balconies. This was very tempting but we opted for staying in the 5000 block to stay with the family and converting the two single beds to a queen size bed. The maid came within an hour to strip the beds, zip the matrices together and remade as a single bed. It was huge and easily accommodated 2 adults and our daughter aged 10. There was some minor maintenance work but this never interrupted or spoilt our holiday as we saw these essential to keeping the hotel grounds in the best possible state, such as replacing pool tiles, painting the floor near the pool one morning. There is an onsite gift shop and mini supermarket which was competitively priced. A larger supermarket which baked fresh bread daily and stocked more fruit, drink etc was only 5 minute walk away. We also found two other supermarkets and a liquor store nearby. The hotel had several pools. An exclusive pool for the premium 4000 block, the two main pools by the turret, and a further pool behind the beach bar. The two main pools had a life guard walking around. It would also appear guests could use the hotel pools a short distance walk along the sea front. There were ample beds around the two main pools if you arrived before 9:30/10:00. The complex requests sunbeds are not reserved with towels/bags. Most people abided by the rules whilst we were there. A few families reserved beds which I have no objection to if this is for a short while whilst grabbing your all inclusive breakfast or lunch But one in particular reserved beds very early morning but never used them until 12:30/14:00 which was frustrating watching others looking for beds. However as there are alternative pools guests can use it never seemed a major issue. We spent quite a few days on the beach, two beds and a parasol was €10.50. The kids loved the sand, swimming in the very calm sea, snorkling and the daytime kids foam party. There was an entertainment schedule available on the notice board in reception and a copy upon request. This included water aerobics, beach volley, water polo, archery, shooting, mini golf and zumba throughout the course of the day. There was also a diving school in the harbour, boat trips and swimming with sealions. We would recommend the glass bottom boat and swimming with sealions, the boat is a little cramped inside but good fun. We saw many different fish and two octopi. The shops and good array of restaurants are a 5/10 minute walk along the sea front and up a walkway to the right. We had a good breakfast including drinks for €5.00 at the Blues Bar, loveley Crepes at Cafe Nero. We also ate at the Chinese just opposite the Blues Bar, El Patio, Fados (Batman outside), Chinese Slow Boat, The Burger Company, Indian (22), the Grill and Garden and Restaurant 15. I wouldn't recommend Fado's it was over rated, with poor service and over cooked food despite the queues outside suggesting its a favorite. Go to El Patio instead its much better, the service and food was great. The Burger Company, Grill and Garden and Restaurant 15 are also worth a visit. Chinese Slow Boat was cheap and cheerful and the indian was lovely but the most expensive place we ate. There was a public beach festival one Saturday night which was very loud until 4am on Sunday morning but this was not every Saturday night. The music was loud due to the base sounds and could still be heard in block 5000 with the doors shut and the air conditioning on. With a good drink it didn't prevent sleep. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have no complaints. Staff in reception, around the pool, bar staff and maids were all very friendly, helpful and polite. We will return depending on the price of course and again would choose self catering. Maybe tempted by the 4000 premium block or a two bedroom for added luxery.

Green Features: Hotel do leave a leaflet about environmental practices such as changing bed sheets and towels only when required and use energy saving lighting.

This is a fantastic place to stay and miss it already.

I will grade every part of the hotel.

Apartment 5/5.
We upgraded to room 2156, this is an upper room with a balcony overlooking the beach, very modern room and clean, aircon was the best we've ever had on any holiday, one unit in the bedroom and one in the living area, 1 minute walk to reception and 2 minute walk to pools and restaurant.

Pools 4/5.
We never tried the children's pool or the 3,000 block pool so can't comment on these, used the 2 main pools for the first couple of days but my kids didn't like the salt water so we thought this was going to spoil our holiday until we found 4,000 block pool, this pool is freshwater and my kids loved it, this area is very chilled out so if you want to relax this is the pool for you, no matter the time of day there is always sunbeds available plus they have double soft sunbeds.

Food 5/5
The food at the Barcelo Castillo is excellent and plenty of choice for everyone, breakfast, full English, cereals, fruits.
Lunch, again, lots of choice to have or you can use the pool food which have chips, burgers, and salads.
Dinner, again, lots of choice with meat being cooked in front of you on 1 side and fish on the other, beautiful cakes also served, the restaurant can get pretty manic at time with guests going left, right and center but we never had to wait for a table as the staff cleared tables quickly.

Staff 5/5
From reception, cleaners, pool, restaurant, entertainment team, bar staff and waiters and waitresses work there socks off and are really pleasant and always have a smile on their face, if you're not using the bar in the auditorium and getting drinks from the waiters and waitresses pls give them a euro or so for their service, so many times we saw full trays of drinks being delivered to groups of people on tables and not one tip given, you're using their service in the end.

Entertainment 3/5.
A little hit or miss, some good, some average, the usual parrot shows and singers, but the highlight of our two week stay was the entertainment teams dance version of Avatar, Harry Potter and The Lion King, it was absolutely brilliant and a must watch.

Building work.
Wasn't a problem as it's down at the bottom of the harbour and will not cause you any problems, more is going to be done by knocking down the old entertainment centre to build a children's play area and they will be building a new pool but I can't see this work being done for sometime.

I would like finish by thanking everyone at Barcelo for such a wonderful holiday and we will be back soon.

From the first minute to the last minute, My Family received an Unacceptable level of customer service and Rude customer service from The Barcelo Castillo, Caleta del Fuste, Fuerteventura:
On Check-In, we were assigned a different Property to the one we booked, we were not provided with our blue bands and we were not offered Hotel Towels.
On arriving into our Room (For our Family of 2 Adults n 2 Children), we encountered the following:
No Seperate Bedroom (Fully open plan)
No Seperate Area to change privately
No Area to hang Ladies' Dresses
No Shaver Plug
Ants and Cockroaches in our Room, throughout our stay.
On one occasion there was a cockroach in the Room. My wife and young son were in the Room at the time (I was at the pool) and they are both very scared of them n were unable to kill the cockroach. My wife called Reception and their response was to send someone down with a can of spray.
We received Three Levels of Unacceptable and Rude Customer Service from The Evening Arena Bar on July 15th or 16th at 11pm approx. and July 17th at 6pm approx. and the Day Bar beside the Mini Club - July 14th at 2pm approx.
We received constant harassment from the Lifeguards for having No Bands! They didn't have any English and we were not aware we required bands as we booked Self Catering. We asked Reception 5 days into our holiday (To complain about the harassment from the lifeguards) and it was only then that they informed us we required bands - 5 Days Into our Holiday!!! July 15th at 1pm approx.
I was refused permission to play the last Ten minutes of an adults water polo game when the teams were 5 players v 4 players! The organiser said No as there is only 10 minutes left!!
On Check-Out, 2 Receptionists Ignored me and assisted other people who skipped the Queue!! When I attempted to intervene the First Receptionist, She completely Ignored me! The Second Receptionist then attempted to ignore me as well, until I was forced to raise my voice to stop her ignoring me!! July 22nd at 10am.
I have never been made to feel so unwelcome in all my life and this at a Resort that charged me €1160 self catering for 12 nights - almost twice the average Rate in Caleta del Fuste!! It is hard to believe that a Resort would charge me this amount of money and then treat my Family in this Way!!
