“Building site but ok for cheap get away”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2013

We just got back from staying in the San jorge which is the self catering hotel of the two ( Antigua houses the all inclusive guests). The San jorge although attached to the Antigua hotel has its own pool, reception etc although due to current upgrades the reception is closed and all furniture removed and the pools aren't manned or cleaned of the dust from the workers doing refurbished to some rooms. The spa & kids club was also shut. If your stopping in the San jorge soon I'd recommend you complain and you be moved to the Antigua as the San jorge was dusty, stunk of paint fumes amongst other fumes and was really noisy from drills, circular saws etc. not to mention the workers going up and down corridors with rubbish on trolleys. Despite this moan the rooms were cleaned to a basic standard 5 days a week, they needed updating which I guess it part of the process they are completing currently. I just think if they are updating they shouldn't put guests that side of the hotel, however you can use the Antigua pool area. The beds were very comfy and very clean however floors were grubby after cleaners were in we had black hairs in the sink, up the basins and other areas on a few occasions and so did other guests. Rooms are pretty small for self catering there is no table area for eating only a small sofa and coffee table. They do however have sky news and euro sport in the rooms in English. I wouldn't stay here again but I'm sure in a year or softer the upgrade the San jorge will be a nice hotel, the Antigua looked ok and guests we spoke to said the food was ok except for hotdogs not sausages in the morning.
In regards to the report the Aberdeen steak house does a huge (and I mean huge) breakfast with drink for under €5 it was the best and cheapest we found. It also does a great vending menu with a 3 course meal for €8.95 ( they add a small tax on but it's only 7%).
Travel from the resort to the main resort corrajo is about 50 mins by bus, you have to change bus half way but its fairly easy and the buses run regularly from Tony's ribs restaurant ( next to the market) it's about €1.50 on the number 3 for the first bus then €3.30 to the main resort corrajo. It's Roth a trip there is a lot more shops etc there. Caleta de fuste is very quiet but lots of parks for smaller children.
The market in caleta de fuste is Tuesdays and Saturdays and you can walk it easily in 10 mins from the hotel or the little train runs to if for €1.50
Weather was breezy on a evening I'd take a jacket or cardigan but its warm enough through the day.
The dog and duck downstairs to the hotel is a lovely little pub with reasonable priced uk sweets and treats.
The watermark was shut for the winter season but we passed it on the bus and it looked canny, shame it was shut but its probably because of not being heated pools.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the Antigua not san jorge due to upgrades

Dear lyndsey 447,

thank you very much for sharing your experience in this web, is very important for us to know the opinion of our guests and get your feedback in order to improve our services and keep growing to give you the chance to have unforgettable holidays.
I have carefully read your comment and I note your observations, thank you also for the opportunity of reply; about the miniclub just say that is not closed, and is not correct that Antigua is for All inclusive clients and San Jorge for self catering guests, there is not this kind of difference, all the guests can get accomodation in both.
I would like to invite you to think about come back next year, I'm sure that you will not disappointed.
Hope to see you back.

Best regards.

First time at this hotel located on the sea front about 5 min walk to main bars and good beech. Hotel is having some work carried out but this did not bother me and my wife too much, they have to upgrade at some point, Before i arrived at hotel i emailed them my fidelity card details which you can apply for online free, Only booked a studio ,but on arrival found i had a 1 bed apt with sea views ,drinks in the fridge and robes in the bedroom which was a nice touch. All staff i came across were friendly and helpful .We stayed in the st Jorge part of the hotel which has no reception area open and the pool could have done with a clean but it was December ,but you can use the main pool in the other part of the hotel where the all inclusive restaurants and bar is located.
Had a problem with the fridge in our room, this was soon sorted by the hotel staff.
Rooms were clean and towels changed frequently. No WiFi at hotel unless you pay.

Went in the dog and duck pub most nights for a drink which is located underneath the st Jorge part of the complex. Very reasonable prices and friendly staff here. Free WiFi there and open till 1 a.m. i would return to this hotel again in the future location ideal 5 min taxi ride to the, airport

Hotel is close to the town, but the hotel is in two parts the part we where in was above the dog and duck pub which meant we had free wifi and whilst we anticipated some noise we had no problem. This part of the hotel had a unmanned reception area that was disused. I think the hotel was having some refurbishment so may have impacted on our experience however no attempt was made to clean the pool area which shows a lack of management presence or lack of respect of its guests.

There was a second pool area which was cleaner, but this was located at the other part of the hotel, so perhaps we where an overflow from there and as we only stayed 4 days they obviously ddin't feel we had a value to them AGAIN poor consideration of their guest.

Food Breakfast very good with cooking stations for eggs omlettes etc, this was replicated in the evening, however the quality and choice of food was poor and even though we only had two day's half board we didn't feel adequately catered for in the eveningroken our stay in to two daus half board two days self catering.

Room Tip: Top tip if you break your holiday in to self catering and half board if you feel so inclined they d...

This is a huge complex. We changed rooms (paid for sea view upgrade) and when moving our belongings, it took me a full 15 mins. to find our original room! Not a complaint, I thought it was very funny. Try and get your bearings as quickly as possible though. There are lots of lifts that take you to different sides of the complex, and the San Jorge & Antigua are separate but connected by a courtyard, this is where I went wrong. Overall the place was pretty clean, and there was little to complain about. One thing though, was, what I consider to be the astronomical charge of €25 per week for wifi!! We were there for 3 weeks, so opted out of that one. Can't understand why the hotel charge is so high, or indeed why they charge at all, when the very close by Dog & Duck pub offers it free, as does the supermarket in the grounds of the hotel. Many of the pavement cafés and pubs offer free wifi too. The supermarket itself is quite basic, fine for things you run out of, but doesn't sell fresh milk, (only UHT) and has a limited supply of other things. Next to this is a small laundrette with 2 washers and 2 dryers both cost €4 each to operate, tokens are available from reception. (Have to supply your own powder/softener). The pool area is large and kept very clean. The sunbeds, however, don't have any padding, so bear that in mind. There is also a smaller pool at the other side of the courtyard. A small aviary with budgerigars, and an ornamental pool, with bubbling water, makes for a nice relaxing place for a seat. The dining room is large enough to cater for quite a crowd, should a lot of people arrive at the same time for meals. At this point, I would like to mention the restaurant staff, with a special mention going to Galileo, Mercedes, Javier, and Sergio. All the staff seemed to work well together, and although the restaurant was busy at times, they still had time to chat to you. They were respectful, but friendly, and very hard working. Special mention too, for Pacquita. This wee lady cooked the eggs/omelettes/crepes in the mornings, when a queue built up, she had it sorted in a blink of an eye, VERY efficient. The food was very palatable, plentiful, a very good selection, but to be honest, I found mainly the vegetables, not hot enough. (Looking back though, there is a microwave in the restaurant. (Why didn't I think of using it?!) One thing, the restaurant and bar do not accept cash, so if you want anything to drink with your meal, or a snack at lunchtime, remember to bring your debit/credit card. The rooms were kept clean, towels and sheets changed regularly. Rooms are pretty basic, but of a good size. The beds are HUGE and all credit to the hotel..... THE SHEETS FITTED!!! The kitchen area has enough utensils and crockery, kettle, microwave, hob, and fridge. Look out for microscopic beasties crawling on the work tops. Don't think this has anything to do with a lack of cleanliness though. Cleaning staff were hardworking and cheerful. They seemed to enjoy their job. A couple of things to remember about the rooms though, no air-con. We were there in October/November so it wasn't too bad. If you want to keep your sliding windows open, close them over, then lay a couple of aerosol cans down (with their lids on!) on the ledge one in front of the other, and open the window, it will then hit the cans and no-one can slide them open from the outside. (at your own risk of course) room safe can be hired for €10 deposit, and €20(I think) per week. Fans are available to hire from the supermarket or from the shop next to the Dog and Duck, you can also hire baby equipment buggies etc., or walking frames for people whose balance isn't great, disabled buggies and other aids for the disabled or elderly are also available to hire. Bring some coat hangers from home too, as the ones in the wardrobes are quite small, fine for children's clothing.
The Dog and Duck pub close to the hotel is a comfortable wee pub, with sofas/magazines/books and friendly staff. They don't do food though. Another good place to go for a drink or snack, is the Goose and Firkin, which is in the shopping area. Try the coconut ice cream (in its shell) it is simply divine. There is a free bus which stops outside the Antigua, and goes to a shopping mall. It runs from 10:05 or thereabouts every hour, with a siesta break. If your feeling fit, you can easily walk it. There are some friendly wee cats along the seafront. They have been neutered, look very healthy and are fed by people who attend to them. There is a market within walking distance, on a Tuesday & Saturday 9:00 'til 14:00, selling the usual souvenirs, clothes, hair braiding, MASSAGES-yes, massages, oh! and 'Prada' 'Louis Vuitton' 'D&G' handbags, and the obligatory 'Rolex' watches!!! But hey! It's somewhere to while away the hours. Lastly but by no means least, on arrival at the hotel, Beatrice gave us a huge smile and greeting us with 'welcome,' reception staff are also a credit to the hotel. Really guys, you could do a lot worse than this hotel . 25deg. when the UK is shivering? I know where I'd rather be!

Room Tip: Careful, if you want to have a completely restful holiday, don't ask for a room above the pools...
