We spent a week at the Sheraton from 18th January. Check in was smooth and pleasant, arriving at 12.20 we had to wait until 2.00 for our room but we knew check in was 3.00. Most hotels would have been more accommodating, but our room 420 was worth waiting for. Sun from sunrise to sunset, when it made an appearance and apart from the pillows which were not fit for purpose and were replaced, by still inferior ones no complaints. Be aware that rooms on the right facing the sea do not receive any sun all day, barring a few.
Staying on a bed and breakfast deal we emailed the hotel to ask the cost of dinner in the buffet restaurant and was advised it was 22 euros each. The hotel staff are obsessed with the fact you have to show a card bearing your room number rather than making you feel welcome when you enter the restaurant. You have to sign for your meal and drinks prior to eating and are not aware of what you are being charged until you receive your account at check out when the cost was actually 60.96 euros for two not as previously advised.
Food and wine was of a good standard, waiting staff were pleasant generally with one or two exceptions, as far as dinner was concerned no complaints. Los Arcos does get busy, but even in January it is quite pleasant eating outside. One night we returned to our table to find our wine and water had been cleared from it. I thought the restaurant managers were prima donas and would not survive in a proper 5 star hotel, lacking in charisma and helpfulness to staff and guests.
Breakfast was a slightly different matter. Still a good choice of food, but the coffee was always cold as was the scrambled egg. In the end we served ourselves from a coffee machine. One morning when placing fruit on my plate , it was encrusted with gunge underneath, the next plate I picked up was also filthy. Not speaking Spanish I could not understand what a waitress was creating about, but it was something to do with used plates , her attitude to her work colleagues and in front of guests was not acceptable.
We ate twice at Wok-n-Zen, good value, great food and one of the best Dim Sun ever. Here I was not impressed how guests who had not made a reservation were treated by the Maitre de. Serious training is needed to make guests welcome , treating them rudely is not acceptable.
Now on to El Faro the Mediterranean restaurant. Food standard high, waiter and waitress charming, only ate there once. Service was slow, made worse by an uprising in the kitchen, the noise and shouting was beyond belief, I did enquire is someone had been murdered. Three members of the hierarchy appeared and eventually things calmed down, but not the courtesy of visiting any guest to apologise. Our two courses took two hours to be served .
We enjoyed the Piano bar, great staff and drinks, music was acceptable.
La Veranda where we had lunch a couple of times was also good with pleasant staff.
Now on to house keeping, there just seems no system in place, one day our room was not cleaned until 3.30 another day we phoned on returning at 4.30, a quick tidy up was done, the coffee and tea was not replaced. I can never remember not tipping house keeping staff in all my years, so this was a first for me.
The pool area is large, sub standard sun beds, unlike hotels we are use to you collect your towels from the pool boy, no offer is made to prepare the sun beds for you. Not only are the staff missing out on gratuities, I would have expected more from a hotel purporting to be 5 star.
Internet free in lobby area but very slow.
A child friendly hotel, with some wonderful young families and good play areas.
In conclusion if you are looking for a true 5 star experience, you wont find it here, serious training and better management procedures are required. You will probably enjoy yourself as we did.
