“Amazing view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

We went there by feet, it took us about one hour time but when we got up there it was all worth it! The view at the whole island was amazing, we shot some great photos! The old town of Thira is located there in the top of the mountain but we could not stop gazing at the view!!

“Interesting ruins with a great view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014 via mobile

Outside of Athens then this is a very interesting site but does not compare to the Acropolis etc. We walked up and down the hill and all throughout the site which all in all took about 4 hours. We really enjoyed this but it was very hot and it is quite a difficult walk in the weather. Make sure you take plenty of water and if you are not a regular walker then maybe another mode of transport is a better idea. The toilet was not working when we visited either so worth thinking about as not anywhere else to go in the area!

“Astounding views...and heat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

The ruins and the views from the top of the mountain were incredible. We started our trek up at 8am in order to arrive early, and by about 9:30-10 it was sweltering. We were there during a heatwave (even the locals agreed that it was hot!) so we didn't get to experience this attractions fully, as we gave up exploring the ruins at the very top of the mountain after about 15 minutes. There is a guy who opens a little kiosk at around 10am who served cold drinks at VERY reasonable prices - he was a lifesaver as we had drunk all our water! On the way down, we took the footpath. DO NOT MISS IT!! We stopped at the church halfway down and went into the cave to splash ourselves with the cool and clear water that pools from a natural spring. We even had a tiny sip - it tasted fine! There was an abundance of lizards running around to watch and we relaxed in the shade for awhile before climbing the rest of the way down the footpath. It comes out randomly in a parking lot off to the right (looking up) of the road. It is worthwhile to search for it!

“Nice hike!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

Great morning activity.

I would recommend to go by car - especially in summer. It's quite far up the hill...we saw a few people walking all the way to the top in a 35 degree heat... it did not look good - most of them were sunburnt.

You can buy water and snacks at the entrance (at the top).

“Great views that are worth the climb!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

Ancient Thera is like many other heritage ruins. Not a lot left to see but if you half close your eyes you can imagine what life was like in a city with very narrow streets perched on top of a mountain. Its a long steady climb up the zigzag road or you can do what we did and take the challenge of the footpath. Definitely need good footwear and take a bottle of water.
The climb is worth it for the views of Kamari and the airport and if you plan it right take the donkeys down to Perissa and take the water taxi back round the headland.
