“Great base to explore Santorini”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2008

My wife and I stayed at the hotel to celebrate our 10th Wedding anniversary.

As most people have noted so far the rooms are clean and well designed in a simple blue and white theme.

We had a studio flat which incoporated , a double bed and 2 twins , a spa pool , fridge etc. Size wise it was more than adequate for 2 people. Air conditioning was a bit of a pain but we got used to it.

Hotel has free Internet use.

We used the hotel as a base and tended to have a day exploring followed by a chill out day near the pool. While the hotel has a central location it is quiet. The only word of warning is that one of the staff is a big power ballard and Phil Colins fan and will pop these on the system at lunchtime.

Although not cheap , if this was located in either Fira or Ia the price would be significantly higher.

Location wise its away from the main strip and you have to run the gauntlet of the local tavernas.

Food wise try either Cafe Classico , or Ricchteri,(both on the far left of the beach) for a drink try Navy's. The remaining taverna's were acceptable but did not offer much from a veggie perspective.

Kamari has plenty of bars but does not feel over developed.
As for getting round Santorini, its easy use the bus. All fares are 1.40 Euros and go to Fira before departing elsewhere. Please note the Greeks try to get on as much people as possible so it can get a bit crowded. Depending on stops its a 20 minutes ride to Fira and a further 20 minutes to Ia. Also ignore any of the trips offered by reps. The local company (Kamri tours on the front) are cheaper and on a more requglar basis.

We stayed here for a week to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. Arrived at the hotel around 1pm and was told our room was not ready until around 2pm so gave us a free drink each while we waited, we then decided to have a wander around the resort to get a feel for the area. When we got back the receptionist offered us an upgrade to a maisonette rather than the Junior suite we had booked on the condition we moved rooms on the last day of our holiday, my husband was ready to except but I did'nt want to have to pack up and ruin the last day of our holiday and besides there was only 2 of us so there was no point in having an upstairs, apparently they had over booked on the junior suites which seems to be a common occurrence.

Our room was on the ground floor an ideally I would have preferred the first but it was spacious and clean and was well equipped with a fridge, kettle, hob etc. The room also had a dvd player and cd player. The bathroom was quite small but it had a jacuzzi bath and shower though don't bother with the jacuzzi it was hopeless. There was also dressing gowns and slippers and plenty of free toiletries. Towels were changed twice a day if you wanted and the sheets about 3 times a week.

The hotel is small and is vary well designed with a lovely pool and bar area. There is a small breakfast room and you could also eat out on the terrace. There was a good choice on offer with bacon, eggs, cereal, fruit, cakes and croissants etc. The pool offers a good range of bar snacks at a reasonable price too.
The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and always had a smile on there faces.

The location of the hotel was excellent as it was near to all the taverna's and bars and the beach was a mere 100m away. The bus stop was also very near to the hotel and as we were one of the first stops you always managed to get a seat.

We really loved the island but did find it more expensive to other greek islands we have been too but felt it was well worth it.
We would come back to Santorini again amd probably this hotel as well as I thought Kamira was the best resort for thing to do.

stayed at the tamarix in may 2008 for our silver wedding.we booked a superior suite to find that having been delayed 7 hours and arrived at 1.30 am we were in a maisonette and nothing superior about it really other than a jacuzzi on the roof (which was freezing).i did mention the room to reception but the girl said that what we had was the same price as a superior suite, still not happy after a couple of days i went to reception again to see if we could be moved,we were then shown a superior suite and agreed to move the room was in another class,so we spent 5 nights in the wrong room all this was a hassle on our "special" holiday but it did get sorted.i think if you are put in the wrong room which by reading reviews looks like it happens you need to get it sorted straight away.Besides this the hotel and staff were great, breakfast excellent pool area very relaxing and location was spot on near to supermarkets, restraunts, beach etc.The food at the bar was great for lunch time ,wonderful salads.Never stayed in a 5 star hotel before but i feel this would be more of what i would expect from a 4 star.would reccomend the hotel and would go back .i do think you may aswell just book the junior suite as they are nice enough and with the hotel being small the pool and jacuzzi in the pool are as good to use as the private one.

We stayed at the Tamarix del Mar Suites in May this year. We wanted a quiet relaxing holiday which is what we got. The hotel is in a fantastic location with everything you want like restaurants, shops & the beach nearby. Everything was of a high standard, the staff were always very pleasant & polite, the breakfast was good & the cleanliness of the rooms exceptional. It didn't have the 5 star feel to it even though it couldn't be faulted & provided the usual extras you would expect from a 5 star hotel such as bathrobe, slippers, etc. We liked the dvd player in the room which made a nice change from watching CNN all the time & the kitchenette was brilliant as we could stock up with water for the week & make tea & coffee when we wanted rather than having to keep going to the bar. The pool area was nice if a little small, you need to be up early to get a sunlounger. It was a lovely little suntrap though, you could get a nice tan in May. It was also secluded which you're thankful for when you walk along the beach & see other hotels which have their pools right by the roadway where everyone is walking & can see. The bus stop is a 2 minute walk from the hotel & it's a 15 minute bus ride to the capital of Thira. The buses are very good, reasonably priced but can get a little overcrowded. I can imagine the summer months are very busy. Make sure you go to Oia to see the sunset, it's stunning!

We booked this holiday as our last before our child is due - so we needed comfort elegance and relaxation.

This hotel had everything - we had our own private hot tub on the balcony - a separate living room and 3 balconies.

Although the hotel is very near to all the bars, restaurants and shops it was not noisy at night - thus you could sleep well.

The service was excellent - staff were very friendly.

Breakfast was included and, for a change, very nice indeed!

Highly recommended and would definitely go back.

Went to the Tamarix in May 2008 - First flight of the season. The hotel was wonderful and quiet, we were in room 111 complete with its outdoor jacuzzi. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. The pool is fantastic and quiet (although the water was a little cold in May). The bar was quiet, but the food during the day was good for the price. The two bar staff, Karina and Socrates were very friendly, and would go out of their way to help you - even bringing your drinks to your poolside lounger. The hotel does spend time looking after the little things in life - attention to detail -towels changed twice a day, bathrobes and slippers, fragrance spray in the rooms after they have been cleaned, etc. All in all, a very restful hotel, not somewhere you would take the kids, but well worth the 5* rating.

  • Liked — Cleanliness
  • Disliked — Nothing (apart from when the germans turned up and put their towels on the pool loungers)

We stayed in this hotel for one week of our honeymoon in Sept 2007. We arrrived very late in the night and were brought to a very small room. The jacuzzi bath was on the balcony facing the appartments directly accross the road so zero privacy. We waited till the next morning to be asked to move room as it wasn't the one we paid for- to cut a long story short we didn't move for two nights until we threatened to leave- not really the sort of hastle you want on your honeymoon. We meet another angry couple the day we checked out who had experienced the same thing. Will NEVER go back. I think this hotel has a scam going where they advertise their nicest room (of which there are only about 3- with the proper rooftop jacuzzi) and trick everyone into thinking that is what they booked. Stay away
