“Maria Preka”
Reviewed 20 January 2008

We paid for a last minute Thomson deal and were given the Maria Preka hotel. The room was spotless with adequate catering facilities. The location was close to the beach and the restaurants. The pool was clean and we had maid service every day. There is also no pool bar, but we took drinks in plastic glasses and cans outside by the pool, Maria didn't seem to mind.

The only negative point was that we stayed in ROOM 20 which had a balcony view of Maria's numerous washing lines, bloomers and bed linen abound! Our balcony also had room 19 toilet window overlooking us, which was unpleasant if the occupants decided to open it after using it!! We never ate on the balcony for this reason.

But the rest of our stay was wonderful, and as a late deal we had a great week.

Kamari is great, lots of tavernas, supermarkets and shops. Great for veggies too. My partner is a vegetarian and sampled many different dishes.

Bus trips to Fira are worth doing, costing only 1.20 euro. Unfortunately the Kamari to Perrissa water taxi wasn't in operation as we went in early May - but did the walk to aicient Thira which was a huge trek but worth it.

Would defintely visit Santorini again, and would stay at Maria Preka's again ,but would hope we wouldn't get room 20 again!!!

Great hotel, ideally situated in a quiet area, but 2 mins walk to the beach, shops and restaurants. The hotel provides the basic cooking/eating facilities (kettle, plates, etc). When I asked at the Thomson travel agency they were unable to tell me this. The pool is really clean, the staff are very friendly, what else do you want?

Don't go on the Thomson tours, Kamari Tours are much cheaper. Beware that the sunset trip to Oia is not exactly romantic, more of a scrum to get the best spot to take pictures!

I definitely agree with the previous review, try the tomato balls, very nice! The food in all the restaurants was excellent and absolutely outstanding for veggies.

My husband can definitely recommend the Volcano Dive Centre. Very helpful and very friendly.

All in all, we can't wait to go back!

We have just returned from a great week in Santorini staying at Maria Preka. Rooms were basic but spotless and Maria and her family were very friendly & helpful. This accomodation is perfectly situated not far from the main restaurants and bars but still very quiet. You can't go wrong if you are looking for good food and service, we tried several different places and had great food everywhere - try the Santorini special - tomato balls! The Mango bar had a good atmosphere for a drink as well.
If you are planning going on the Thompson excursions be warned, the Santorini impressions is a great day out but involves quite a lot of walking uphill and through tiny cobbled streets, so if you are less agile beware! Similarly the Sunset cruise mentions a visit to a volcano what we weren't told was that it was a round trip of 1.5 hours walk - sturdy shoes needed! If you want to visit Thira go on the bus and not the excursion it is much, much cheaper and very easy to get to.

Overall a great holiday and would love to return to Santorini in the near future

This was my first trip to Santorini but it will not be my last. I have already booked to return next year to the same hotel. This has got to be the cleanest room I have ever stayed in. The staff, all family, were so nice and helpfull and made you feel comfortable in every way. The Maria Preka is a very basic place to stay with no pool bar, resteraunt or food outlet but this asside it is so well located with a beautiful clean pool and sun beds you can lounge on any time of day without having to reserve it with a towel at 6.0am. Shops and bus services are a mere two minutes walk away and the beach and promenade are just at the end of the street.
All in all this was a great holiday at a lovely hotel and I cant wait to return.

Just returned from the Maria Preka where we spent 2 weeks. Apts were central but quiet and it must be one of the cleanest places I have ever stayed in. Pool area was usually quiet and all staff very friendly. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Santorini.
