“Must read before booking!”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

Acqua Vatos Hotel, Santorini, Greece:
You MUST read this if considering this hotel. I must admit, we do not normally write reviews unless the service was extraordinary or extremely poor. Unfortunately in this case, Acqua Vatos Hotel was exceedingly poor. There were problems after problems, and perhaps more surprising than the poor quality of the hotel, was the shady quality of the individuals that ran it. I prefer brevity, so I summed the pros and cons of the hotel below.
Pros:
- The freshwater pool was nice, cozy, and with decent lounge chairs. Extra sun screen was provided poolside.
- Staff, although shady in some of their dealings (will explain in cons), seemed familiar with island of Santorini
- Greek Breakfast was pretty good. Freshly made items daily
- Free Tea and Coffee (from a machine) available 24/7
- Very close to Kamari beach
Cons:
- First thing we noticed was A/C was barely effective. More of a fan than an A/C. Trust me, something you want to ensure works when you travel somewhere hot
- Pool didn’t allow any food/drinks by poolside, you had to purchase from their poolside bar. This included water that the hotel recommended we buy when we first arrived
- No safes in rooms. The safes are located downstairs. In my opinion: 1. Easy access for shady staff and 2. Easy access if a thief decided to hold the place up (receptionist had key to safe). My watch disappeared at the hotel
- Small/inefficient bathrooms. Designed so that water splashes everywhere when you shower.
- Their website boasts about “wi-fi throughout hotel” and an “internet cornet” but both of which you must pay some ridiculous fees
- Upon arrival, the staff sits you down for a 20 minute information session. Although I have to credit this for some providing some useful information, we had just traveled all day to arrive at this destination. The last thing we wanted to hear was a long information session (I concede this is a personal opinion, may be placed in “pros” if this sounds helpful)
And lastly, this short story summed up the end of our trip. The day before we were due to leave, we inquired about the “Airport and port transportation” listed on their website. She said she’d schedule a taxi and asked what time our flight was. We said “1300,” and then she said we should probably be picked up at 11:45. My significant other asked if the receptionist could make it a little earlier because we like to arrive at the airport early and, as we found out, Santorini airport is a complete mess. Oddly, she argued with us about the time. We were surprised and wondered why it mattered to her what time we got a taxi for. In the end, she said “OK” to 11:15. The next morning we went downstairs at 11:00 ready for the taxi. We then waited until 11:30. We went back inside and asked again if she made the taxi for 11:15 and she said, “Oh yea they just called, they are running late.” At 11:45 a large van that must be contracted with the hotel pulled up and said he was our ride. Surprised we jumped in thinking it was a free service. At the airport we got off and the driver insisted on 15 euros. Please feel free to look at the map but Acqua Vatos Hotel is probably about 2 miles from the airport at the most. We said we could have taken a taxi for cheaper. In the end, we realized why the receptionist put up such a huge fight about us requesting a taxi at 11:15 instead of 11:45. The hotel must have some contract with this shuttle service and they charge an outrageous amount to travel a short distance. Not only did the receptionist lie to us about the taxi “being late,” but also lied that she made the taxi service for 11:15. There were other people on the bus due to be picked up before us at 11:30.
Conclusion: There are A LOT of hotels on Santorini. STRONGLY recommend NOT booking at this one.

At first let me say that myself and my wife just use a room as a place to hang our hats in so to speak, but to get a better prospective than those you say (great time, lovely staff and brilliant hotel) well that’s mostly true, but that does not really help so I will put down the good and bad points to help you decide, but this is just one person’s view on it.
So good points, close to the beach, close to the bus stop, helpful staff especially the night staff, very clean, hot and cold continental breakfast, and well decorated, swimming pool ok but very cold, very large bed.
Bad points, the manager was not helpful seemed to be a bit aloof, very crowded breakfast area not enough tables, very small shower room and toilet with the water goes everywhere.
Now one point that I was not happy with, when my wife tripped over and cut herself because of the high step through the door from the terrace in to the room, the only person that seemed concerned was the holiday rep. not as if we was complaining, just trying to make aware of the danger.
If you have a good budget then get a suite but if you’re like us and use it to sleep and change of clothes, shower and out again then economy / standard, but we was told by Thomson we had booked a balcony and got a terrace, one to remember when booking, that did not deter us from having a great holiday though, Kamari is an amazing little town with a great view on the holiday maker, I.E. no traffic on the see front after a certain time, so you can walk freely pasted all the shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, and a heads up if you like me like a English breakfast then just up from the bus stop there’s the Irish bar full English, eggs and bacon and scrambled egg and toast really nice.
I hope this helps but ask the question, for the price can you get more elsewhere in Kamari I think you can with several hotel right on the beach.

Room Tip: if you book a standard room or an economy one well there pretty much one and the same, a suite of ro...

Stayed for a week in AV. The hotel was everything you need and the staff were very helpful and professional always with a cheery smile. They helped us book the sunset cruise, (much better than the one offered by Thomson) and a hire car from a place 25 meters down the road, (no problems delivering and returning the car)
The design of the hotel is very contemporary and it was all spotlessly clean.
The bar prices were reasonable €5 for a G&T and the breakfast was great, with different hot selection each day.
The only factors that prevented me giving "Excellent" were:
The rooms are small. The double bed is against a wall so one of you will have to crawl out.
The shower room is also small, so if you were a "bigger" person, you might struggle.
There was also some road noise when sitting round the pool. Mopeds, quad bikes and busses are passing and it can detract from the otherwise tranquil setting.

just returned had a great time! Staff work so hard to make sure everything is kept to a high standard nothing out of place. We had an Economy room which was small very clean but adequate for our needs towels changed every day no fail! pool towels changed as & when you needed Breakfast was very quite busy with people but nobody talking strange! Pool very quite & relaxed with prices for food & drinks on par with the main area. Hotel is situated just off the main strip its close to all amenities beach & Taverna's to which i must add that a lot of the sea front restaurants are not owned or run by Greeks!! so ask at hotel if your looking for the real deal for us that was Taverna Sellada. The only problem with the main strip is your hassled by the restaurant as you walk along all after your custom. but a firm no thank-you did seem to do the trick but you find yourselves having to do this as you pass every restaurant. That aside still had a fab time food prices vary from 30-60 euros for two people drinks 4 euros for a large beer 5-7 for a carafe of wine. went to Oia on the local bus great Fun lol stunning sun set but very pricey to eat & drink and very very busy with everybody looking for the best spot to watch the sun go down!
overall very nice visit! great people! good location!& fantastic hotel

Room Tip: its all about what you need from a room! Economy is a basic room clean but compact for us its a bed...

My wife and I were on our honeymoon and we couldn't have planned a better experience. Upon arrival, Elena sat us down and planned out our entire visit by explaining the layout of the island and all the must see places. After that, she helped us rent a car by brining the car rental employee to our doorstep. We visited the pool and outdoor bar and were greeted by Joanna who also recommedned the best restaurant in Imerovigli, Anogi, which we were glad we tried. We then took off to our first excursion based on her recommendation. Upon our return to the hotel, Thanos surprised us with an upgrade to a suite which was beautiful with a balcony overlooking Kamari Beach. The next day, we continued on our recommended excursions. When we returned that day, Elena informed us that we were upgraded to their sister hotel on the Caldera in Imerovigli, Above Blue Suites. All these upgrades were free of charge and I believe it's because they knew we were on our honeymoon. Like I said, we couldn't have planned a better experience. My wife and I recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone visiting Santorini. If you're staying somewhere else, make sure you atleast stop by to meet these amazing individuals. I would return just to see them again. Thank you Elena, Thanks, and Joanna. From Moussa and Verenise.
