The pros: good location straight on the beach, nice pool area - a pool for swimming and also bubble bath, the cleaning lady did a great job every day, friendly stuff in the reception, I stayed in last week of July and first week of August and the air con was free in my room and worked quietly. However, I could hear the neighbour's air con which was quite loud. They offer it free in the hottest months like August (other times you need to pay for it).
The sunbeds are 2 times cheaper on the pool area than straight on the beach if you don't have the all-inclusive stay. On the beach they charge 6eur for 2 sunbeds and umbrella, but in the pool area you get it for 3 eur. And it's quite convenient to leave your staff there while going to swim also in the sea.
They sent me to a 5* hotel nearby for the first night when I arrived because they had some kind of problem with my room, and they were super nice towards me - the covered the expenses for my taxi to there and back, gave me free Wifi and apologised many times for that! And I have to say that the 5* hotel was quite equal to 3* hotels in northern and central Europe. I compared the prices of both hotels and I think you get more value for the Astir Beach hotel. Yes, the 5* hotel was nicer but not worth the money they ask for.
The cons: the breakfast was quite bad if you want to eat healthy - there was a lot of fried stuff and breads and not really some salad, only olives and tomatoes which ,however, were good. The coffee wasn't great either - there was a coffee maschine which made either instant filter coffee or instant sweetened Nescafe coffee. I personally can't drink the last one as I'm sensible towards coffee quality and I will get stomach problems if I drink it. I'm probably not the only one so I hope they will change that!
And you can't get real juices, you get these very sweet artifical juices and frizzy frinks. Fortunately they had plain water option as well as carbonized water.
The hotel rooms were dated and would need a refurbishment, but the bed was good and the room was spatious and had a balcony which actually compensated it, but what was the biggest minus for me was that I had no Wifi signal there! That is the most important thing for me! You have to pay to get the internet usually but even if I had payed I couldn't have used it in my room which was frustrating to me!
Coming from a country where you can use Wifi for free in pretty much everywhere was the biggest shock for me, but I guess in Southern European countries things are different as I heard from the locals that this is common practice amongst hotels there.
You have to pay extra if you want to have refrigerator in the room and you will hear the neighbours!
From my bath the water didn't go down so easily, however, it was manageable and I didn't get too annoyed by that. Obviously they have a sewage problem on the whole island as you can't through any papers on the toilets anywhere!
Overall, I would rate it ok considering the country and money you pay for it! For more comfort, I'd suggest to take more expensive hotels, but if you are not bothered with a hotel that needs refurbishment but is overall clean and has a good location, then Astir Beach is ok.
