ClubHotel Riu Chiclana
Ranked #6 of 10 Hotels in Novo Sancti Petri
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Booked an all-inclusive week at this hotel; it's the second time we go to a Riu hotel and we were not disappointed.
This particular hotel seems very new, and everything looks well looked after. Two very big pools, access to a lovely sandy beach, 4 restaurants, huge air-conditioned rooms, very good room service every day - really can't fault it.
They cater for families and have lots of activities for smaller children - perfect if you have a young family and need some time off!
Everyone was friendly & helpful - from Reps to cleaners.
If I tried really hard to come up with a criticism, it would be that there is not much to do outside the hotel complex. But then most people don't go to these 'all inclusive' holidays to explore the countryside - they go to relax and chill out for a week or two and re-charge their batteries.
10 out of 10 from us.

Booked via Thomson for a week, 2 rooms to accommodate 3 adults and two children.

1. First impressions & grounds
- Good state of repair, nicely landscaped lawns and gardens
- Large and well-staffed reception with numerous workstations (helps very limited queues as we experienced throughout the stay)
- Relatively large complex but in the end easy to find your way around
- The hotel location is somewhat secluded if you're looking for places on your doorstep to go out in the evening

2. Rooms
- We asked for interconnecting/close by rooms - got 2 rooms on the same floor in the same block, which was an ok result considering how large the hotel complex is
- Rooms were simply decorated, fitting the 4* standard. Slight wear and tear but nothing too bad
- Bathroom with a bathtub&shower, no shower cubicle. Have not seen the toiletries in sacks in ages but on the upside the quality was ok
- Twin bed was not very comfortable. Sofa for the kids was ok for them but not sure how comfortable it would be for an adult sleeping on it
- Flat screen TV with loads of channels in many languages for those interested
- No wifi in the room and no table & chair were the drawbacks, alongside the mattress quality

3. Catering
- Choice of main restaurant + 3 themed restaurants (prebooking required)
- Overall pleasantly surprised by the quality of the offer both on the food and drink front as well as the availability (frequent replenishments)
- Main restaurant offers a bit of everything that you find in the themed ones but is also more crowded - we preferred the Italian/Grill restaurants as you can also take a cheeky trip to the other one (they share the same building) if you fancy more variety
- Food variety is sufficient if you stay for a week
- Drink selection was fine and cocktail quality actually quite reasonable (did not expect much). The speed of drink service was excellent, considering how busy the place is overall

4. Facilities
- Swimming pools were excellent - 1 for kids, 2 for kids-swimmers + adults. Make sure to come early to get some sunloungers if you plan to spend time by the pool, this place works as everywhere else - you come late and there are towels spread around everywhere
- Swim-up bar is a great addition - offering a limited selection of drinks but working very well, especially for the slush mix
- Gaming room was good (billiard, classical arcade games and machines) but a bit too small for a place this size so it got very busy at peak times
- Computer room and gym on offer (tried neither), free wifi for 90min in the reception area
- Kids club - tried arts/crafts t-shirt painting, which was enjoyable. There is also a decent playground with partial shading + minipool for babies (not shaded though)
- Various activities can be booked via reception (we did horse riding + car rental)

5. The staff
- Generally friendly and helpful, at times more tricky to communicate as the two languages clearly are Spanish and German (matching the guest nationality composition)
- Housekeeping did a good job cleaning the room daily

6. The beach
- Outstanding beach - just a short walk (with some stairs), clean, sandy, great... top marks, especially if you enjoy some waves
- Very recommended for longer walks as well - we walked one evening to the promenade in Sancti Petri (>5km) and it was lovely. It turned out to be tricky to find a taxi to go back but thankfully the bus #8 saved us

A few tips:
- Free wifi in the reception (individual passwords issued)
- Replenish on water in 1.5l bottles that you can get at the reception
- Rooms further out are quieter (no disco/bar noise)
- Absolutely do give it a try if you're travelling with kids, we all enjoyed it very much. I'd certainly not recommend this hotel for a couples getaway - and my wife agrees!

Overall left after 1 week with very positive impressions. Certainly fits the 4* experience we expected and it was actually not too different to last year's 5* Insotel in Menorca, though you would find a few nice bits and pieces missing if you're accustomed to 5* style. I would have rated "excellent" were it not for the sleep quality that certainly can be way better.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms close by if you're travelling in more people. Check the distance to the main enter...

There is a reason why the Spanish come here and all along the ten mile stretch of La Barrosa
Beach, it is fabulous with usually a pleasant breeze from the Atlantic. It is known as secret Spain
with low rise hotels, the ideal place for a quiet break.
This hotel ticks all the boxes, food and drink on the all exclusive deal was great, all facilities were excellent as well as the entertainment.

Room Tip: We had a family room which are situated close to the pool area but all rooms are fairly close to all...

The airport was fast, the transfer was 45 minutes and the check in took 5-10 minutes. We were greeted with a fresh glass of orange & a blue band which it thought was a fantastic idea as the workers were able to greet us in english. Our luggage was delivered to our room and we went straight to lunch.

The rooms: how anyone can spend their holiday critisizing furniture is beyond me! I don't remember what the curtains and bed sheets looked like as I was too busy eating drinking and sitting round the pool! Who cares if furniture is dated when you're on holiday? You only sleep in the room. We were in block 21 and it was fantastic, sea view and lovely balcony. I couldn't fault the room myself it had a huge flat screen tv which made my boyfriend happy for the World Cup when the bar had closed down!

The food: Absolutely amazing! How I only put half a stone on over two weeks I do not know. Breakfast had a huge selection of eggs, beans, bacon, Spanish omelette, omelette, tomatoes, toast, baguettes, cold meats and cheese, yoghurt, cereal, fruits, pastries, pancakes & chocolate spreads as well a huge selection of fresh juices and milkshakes. Lunch was lovely, I enjoyed fresh fish everyday, with the nicest selection of salad you will ever see. There was chips, chicken nuggets & fish fingers for the kids too so if you're picky you will find something you like. Pizza, pasta, paella, lots of choice. Ice cream, cakes, fruit for desert. The Italian restaurant was absolutely delightful! And we enjoyed the grill for dinner which was mainly grilled salmon, chicken kebabs, pork, Spanish sausage, chicken, turkey, ham and steaks. The andalucian restaurant was also nice, I enjoyed tasting new things. With all of this.. Between 3.30-6 the grill is open next to the pool with hot dogs, toasties, chips, hamburgers, and Ice cream to enjoy.

The drinks: the cocktails were lovely! Beer on tap, all 3 wines on tap & all fizzy drinks on tap all branded. If you wanted to you could go to the bar and be served. You could also get a cup of mixed nuts which we enjoyed way too much every evening after dinner. Bottles of water on demand from reception whenever you like (1.5litres)

The staff/entertainment: they could not do enough for you! They were all very polite and willing to help. My favourites were the entertainment staff who worked there bums off to make everyone have an amazing holiday they were there all day doing the bug selection of activities including football Zumba aqua gym volleyball rifle shooting darts bingo and loads more as well as putting on the most amazing entertainment in the evening I have ever seen abroad! There was also a night club open from 11-1am which was quite nice to go to!

The location: THE BEACH IS AMAZING. Please make effort to go and watch the beautiful sunset!!! Breathtaking. We went to the shopping center a couple of times which we loved, lots of shops to look round & restaurants and bars to go to! It takes 20 minutes to walk 4 hotels down the beach and cut through into the road or you can get a number 8 bus for 1.45 euros! Chiclana town didn't interest us much. But we went to the promenade which was lovely and worth it in the evening. Gibraltar was absolutely amazing and worth every penny through Thomson. The Reps were amazing and gave extremely useful information on the coach journey on the way & gAve us a lot of history about the area. Cadiz was a lovely couple of hours out of the hotel too. If Thomson did a trip to aqua land that would be fantastic as we couldn't get there as it would of required getting on a train and would've taken too long. There is a shopping center 10 minute walk too which is very big with a pharmacy nearby.

This hotel is suitable for any age! Couples, elderly, families & friends. We had no problem getting a bed each day only if you want to go in a certain spot will you need to get up earlier about 9.

Overall we had the most perfect holiday and I would love to go back one day.

Just got back from ClubHotel Riu Chiclana . we had a FANTASTIC time there . The hotel is great for kids and adults . Three pools one with a bar in , one with a pirate ship in . Lots of sun beds , we never had trouble to get 6 together . The food is very good . Great choice with 4 restaurants , breakfasts & evening meals were excellent and if you get peckish the lunch and snacks are good too . All the staff were very friendly . Just a short walk across sand dunes to a most glorious beach , the beach is gently slopping so good for kids . To see the sunset from the dunes is a must . This was the second year we holidayed here and we hope to go back there next year . Just one thing missing , the hotel is isolated so no town or village to wonder round in the evening but with those sunsets who needs shops ?

If you want a relaxing holiday just by the pool and beach you can't get better than here

Room Tip: We had rooms 3506 / 7 / 9 very quiet

We had a 2 week stay here from the 11th July. We had a really enjoyable holiday. The hotel was clean, the gardens immaculate and the staff friendly and helpful. The animation team were fanastic - we're always a bit wary of the entertainment when on holiday but we loved all their shows and found them hilarious at times - all the team were also very friendly. The food was good, a bit repetitive but we were there for 2 weeks. The room was fine, we had some lovely animals made out of towels - thankyou! The only niggle was the sofa bed which was uncomfortable, creaky and needs replacing. Our main issue was the sunbed situation around the pool - firstly too many beds crowded around the pool area - i think if the towel situation, that is people reserving beds with towels and then not using them for 1/2 and whole days was sorted ie rules enforced then less beds would be required whilst also ensuring everyone had a bed when they NEEDED it. Loved the slushy pool bar. Other than a few niggles which didn't affect the fact we had an amazing holiday we would reccomend this hotel.
