Owner description: Zebula Golf Course is a classic Bushveld par 72 course, set in the open plains of the reserve with herds of game roaming freely. The course is relatively flat yet undulating, inviting to play with generous fairways and clusters of trees that act as hazards. Voted the Golf Digest's Best New Golf Course 2004 and awarded the 5 star Golf Experience for 2010 by Compleat Golfer, Zebula has matured wonderfully over the past few years into a truly great course to play. Zebula was designed by the legendary Peter Matkovich, a golf professional for 25 years, and a world-respected golf course designer for more than 15 years. When it comes to golf course design, first and foremost Peter is an environmentalist - seamlessly blending nature and design to create golf courses that are inherently sensitive to local environments. In fact, love for the indigenous remains a cornerstone of his designs; to him, golf should offer a retreat, an escape, from one's busy life. The layout, built to USGA specifications with kikuyu fairways and bent grass greens is so much part of the bushveld experience that one wouldn't be surprised to encounter a lofty giraffe or a shy zebra or two during your golfing experience. The wonderful year-round climate and the judicious use of naturally occurring water practically guarantees the course will be green year round. Complemented as it is by an excellent Clubhouse with a location that defies description, a well-stocked Pro Shop and superb practice facilities, Zebula is a joy to play. You are destined to keep coming back again and again to experience it. As we like to say: if you have Africa in your blood and you love the game of golf, life just doesn't get better than this!

“Far from a golf club atmosphere”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

We returned expectantly to Zebula for lunch on the terrace overlooking the closing hole, marketed as "Africa's premier bush, golf and spa destination" and "The clubhouse is the estate's crowning glory". Entry for a day visitor has to be covered by food & bev spend of R250 per vehicle, fair enough. We got sat down and started looking at the menu, and then, you would think a bus load of soccer supporters on their way to the cup final at Wembley Stadium had arrived. It turns out that Zebula finds conference business very useful. Augusta National invaded by Ryder Cup fans. Is there anything more disappointing than planning a re-visit which then shocks you? I was stunned.

Dear PopNorthcliff,

On behalf of Zebula Golf Estate and Spa, I would like to humbly apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Zebula is referred to as “A Venue For All” by which we emphasize that we can cater to singles, couples, families, leisure groups, corporates as well as conferencing groups. Over weekends we are occupied mostly by leisure GUESTS, but during the week our core business originates from conferencing groups. On the day that you are referring to we had 3 Conferencing Groups in-house and therefore during the luch period they were all having lunch.

I do apologise that we did not meet your expectations on the day.

Kindest Regards
Ziska

“good and bad”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

fantastic place, but dont like the fact that they let you pet little lion cups (any tigers actually). This practise have some very unfortunate consequences that visitors may not be aware about and should be banned IMO. But apart from that the place itself is gorgeous.

Dear Emil S,

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments.

We offer the Lion and Tiger cub interactions solely for educational reasons and to give people the opportunity to see Lion and Tiger cubs that would otherwise never have the opportunity to see them in real life. We believe in “Conservation by Education”.

We hope we will have the opportunity to host you again in the near future.

Kind regards
The Zebula TEAM

“Beautiful golf course”

Much effort is put into keeping it looking good. I did not have a chance to play on all of its 18 holes, but I must say it would be something on my bucket list if I had one...

“Great golfing”

We enjoyed this course thoroughly as well as the view while playing.
The greens are amazing even though there are wild herbivores walking around all over the place.
