We recently visited the Sondela Country House, and experienced true luxury-in-the-bush. It certainly lived up to its 5 star rating with all the trimmings of fine details in the well-appointed rooms, butler service, absolutely gourmet meals and its exclusive tranquillity in beautiful garden surrounds. This accomodation is one of many other types of Sondela offers, which ranges from bush camps to fully-fledged houses and luxurious new chalets totally rebuilt after Sondela's devastating fire some one and half years ago.

The greater Sondela Nature Reserve offers a multitude of activities, inclusive of heated swimming pools, horse riding, game drives, Piccinini's farmyard and the wildlife conservancy project. Our son even had the opportunity to the the guided "lion walk" with four lion cubs!

The Country House's seven rooms all refreshingly individually decorated, and one of the three rooms we occupied as a family even had an outdoor privately enclosed jacuzzi bath. No request was too hard to fulfill and the friendly staff prepared a great afternoon high tea for us on the lounge patio. My wife indulged in a very rewarding spa experience right next to the hotel.

This was our second visit to the Country House and I fully recommend it to anyone who wishes for style and pampering in the Bushveld - affordably so - and not longer than an hour's drive from the hustle and bustle of the city of Pretoria.

We stayed in Sondela for 3 nights with our family (some from the UK).

Was a good break from the city which bring a bit a peace and quiet.
What was great for our guests from the UK was that the buck would walk right next to the chalet's.

There are activities and things to do for the kids.
We went on a game drive which was very good.

An outdoor adventure not to be missed, with so many activities from the game drives to the quad bikes to the horse riding to the swimming and walks within the nature reserve to the bicycle rides and bushveld braai's an experience not to be missed. We were feeding wildlife on our doorstep , from our hands into the mouths of kudu and zebra and many bird life, the animals come right up to you to be fed and petted, a little shy at first but friends throughout our wonderful stay. The staff must be complimented on an exceptional tour and the warm and welcoming hospitality makes you want to stay a little longer, our chalets were cleaned daily and we enjoyed the stillness and quiet of the night. The in house shop baked fresh mouth watering bread and sundowner cocktails were refreshing after a day out of activities. Well done to all that serviced us. An absolute pleasure to getaway to the African bushveld.

Room Tip: All chalets are private and in the bush. Showering while the wildlife looks on, priceless.

We camped out in a very busy camping site with stands all on top of each other. Must compliment on the cleanliness of our private bathroom facilities. The highway traffic noise was very distubing and we struggled to fall asleep at night. As a family we enjoyed the facilities and also found it affordable. The Piccinini restaurant was a terrible experience. We waited a long time for service. We asked a passing waitress for a menu who fully ignored us. Eventually another waitress served us with menus. In short one meal we ordered arrived long after our friends received their meals. One of our friends found a hair in her food and my meal was completely forgotten. I took up the matter with the immediate manager who did not show much reaction. When leaving I also laid a complaint with the manager - Hino at reception who apologized and said he will discuss the matter at the afternoon meeting. He also took my details and insisted he will contact me on Monday with feedback - still waiting

We visited Sondela this past weekend and stayed in the country house, we were a couple looking for a nice relaxing weekend away. I must say that our experience of the guest house was amazing and we generally had a good time. Though I must say that there is abit of a lack of communication between staff and guests, they are very friendly helpful when you can find them in reception but the tedious activity of having to leave your room everytime you would like to order or enquire about something is quite annoying. It would be beneficial to have phones or bells in the rooms so you can call on a butler at any time without having to get up and physically look for them.

One thing that did stand out for us was the food, the food was amazing and deserves a 5 star rating with very friendly chefs who'll prepare food to your requirements which was really nice. The activities around the farm are amazing and you need to try the spa, that also stood out for us.

Overall a good weekend away - if they can get the communication between staff and guests right then it would be perfect but I would still recommend it to anyone.
