Description: The "Gardesana" building has more than 500 years of history. It has been built by the Venetian Republic for the meetings of the Council of the Ten Communes of this side of the lake. After Napoleon, during the Austrian domination, until 1866, it had a dark period of decadence. At the end of the last century, it was transformed into a hotel and, in a few decades, it became the centre of culture, arts and good cuisine. In the last fifty years, it has been preferred by famous personages like: Beniamino Gigli, Toti Dal Monte, Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca, André Gide, Stephen Spender, Vivien Leigh, Lawrence Olivier, Maria Callas, Luis Trenker, Dino Risi, Ugo Tognazzi and Vittorio Gassman. In 1980 the building was bought by Mr. & Mrs. Lorenzini. They continued, with enthusiasm, the improvement of the hotel and restaurant in order to satisfy their distinguished guests.

Ate here on our first night, were advised to book and did, but don't think we needed to due to time of year.

We were the only other couple dining that night and by 15 mins into our meal we were the only 2.

Food choices were good, chef trying to be fancy, not always to the better, but still decent enough.

When sat down we were provided with a glass of prosecco which was nice, although my partner could not drink it due to being pregnant, so was double bubble for me :-).

A little amuse bouche was provided too which was of a pleasant nature.

The starter of Scallops I had was slight overcooked, think due to the broth it was in, my partner had salad.

For main I had a veal fillet which was very nice, my partner had the steak, requesting well done due to pregnancy they didn't provide this first time (language barrier we think), but happily cooked up another steak to requirements which we were grateful for.

Desserts were good and wine was nice too, and was offered different years of the grape and also a half bottle if required.

Bill was about £90 all in, so not too bad, but would get better in UK for that price.

Come here once for something a bit up market around the Torri area, the staff try there best where possible to be helpful which is great.

When making the reservation I asked what the selection of vegetarian dishes was like (we had one veggie and one non-veggie in our party) they made not of this and when were shown our table they took time to highlight all of the vegetarian options on the menu as well as the other dishes that could be prepared as vegetarian dishes.

Both meals veggie and non were delicious, and beautifully presented. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Suspend your expectations on service. This isn't The City. So book a table about half an hour before sunset on the pontoon and watch the sunset and the lights appear on the western shores of the lake. They still know that an Americano beats an Aperol spritz. Listen to the water slopping against the lake side. As an amusement try and understand why Germans don't understand that you should ask to be seated. Be tolerant.

I think we've tried most restaurants in Torri and the Ristorante Gardesana is definitely the best. Whether its a quiet meal for two or a wedding breakfast for 25, the food and service are excellent.

We had the restaurant's very good lake perch dinner, which we ate with a bottle of good local vino bianchi, served by an especially knowledgeable and attentive waitress, all while seated on a vine-covered balcony overlooking a particularly photogenic harbor filled to brimming with small craft and sailboats. There was nothing to dislike!
