We stayed at this hotel as part of a Relais et Chateau trip around the Medoc with stops in Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion and Mirambeau. This was our first stop after landing in Merignac. The drive took about 45 min and this hotel proved to be an excellent choice as it was quiet, relaxing and near many of the greatest vineyards. Keep in mind this hotel is not particularly close to any major village or town so you either drive or bike to see the area. About the only things close by are the Chateau Lynch Bages and the village of Bages, where we had a simple lunch on our arrival at the brasserie in the town centre. As mentioned by others, the hotel has bikes to explore further afield.
The hotel itself is not extravagant in appearance from the outside though it is certainly appealing and very well appointed. It was full during our stay with Butterfield and Robinson cyclists so no room upgrade was possible as a 5C RetC member. Still the room was top quality with a good view of the courtyard. The staff were incredibly helpful and pointed us to some small towns outside of Bages that were worth a visit. I have to say the area is rather quiet in spite of the tremendous visibility of the wineries-which was a bit of a shock. The staff assisted us on our first evening with a restaurant suggestion in Saint Julien that turned out to be very good and in organizing a last minute tour of Lynch Bages. So three cheers for all their help.
Breakfast was really top quality with a lot of choice and plenty of fresh fruit (a particular pet peeve of mine). Breakfast at this level of hotel is never inexpensive but this was decent value for money.
We managed to squeeze in a lunch at the outstanding restaurant at the hotel. By accident we arrived 25min late due to misjudging how long it would take to get back after touring around the region, so we had only 1h to complete a lunch in a 2* Michelin restaurant since we had an appointment at Lynch Bages. That is not an easy feat but we warned the Maitre d'hotel and he accommodated our needs with about a minute to spare. And he even had a sense of humour, not something easy to find in some overly formal top end restaurants. The food was spectacular both in terms of the presentation, quality and taste. The staff, including some new trainees, were all able to handle the challenges we put to them. The chef came out to greet each diner and we were sorry to miss him in our rush to leave. Seeing and tasting food from a top talent is always a special treat.
I have to give a special shout out to the General Manager. She was exceptionally pleasant and helpful and took the time to let the next hotel (St. James) we were on our way. She and her staff more than met all our needs. This is a great hotel to relax, bike the area or visit vineyards. And of course to eat superb cuisine.

What a great hotel. It was comfortable, cozy but spacious, the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating Located next to the village of Bages. We rented bikes and rode to Pauillac and other wineries. We had one of our most interesting and best meals at the restaurant. This is a place I want to visit again.

This Relais & Chateau property is right in the heart of the Medoc wine region and makes for a great stay for anyone exploring the chateaux and vineyards in the area. Very spacious with plenty of common and seating areas, which become extensions of your room. Situated in their own vineyard, they actually produce their own wine. It is owned by the same owners as Chateau Lynch-Bages, who have also really fixed up the small village of Bages with some stores and a great bistro, La Lavinda. The in-house restaurant is a two-star Michelin, which unfortunately was closed the days we were there so didn't get to try it. But their bistro is great with eight wines on tap and a great wine list. Limited food menu, but everything we had was good. After a day our touring vineyards, you want to come home to a nice, spacious, comfortable place; Chateau Bages provides exactly that.
Tip: Stay away from the larger "brand" wines for tours and tastings who not only charge, they don't provide great samples of what their wines are really like for the tastings. You can get better tastings, at no price, from the many other chateaux in the area.

We are regulars at this very well appointed hotel and the warmth and helpfulness is well recommended. They were extremely helpful and hospitable. The hotel is very near all the great Chateaux in Pauillac including LAFITE and MOUTON ROTHSCHILD definitely worth a stay. The restaurant was good but a bit expensive and small portions.

Room Tip: all rooms are good

This has got to be the The best hotel to stay in and around Bordeaux! the service is 5 star, extremely prompt and extremely courteous. The only French staff (i've experienced) who converse without any inhibition in English. the restaurant is a two star chef who is extremely adaptable and also serves excellent Vegetarian food! this is my 3rd stay at this property and Im definitely going to be back
