“Restless place to stay”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

I was a bit worried to stay here as a solo female traveller because of previous reviews, but had no problems concerning that. Although I found it a bit strange that the younger owner asked me to be friends on facebook only after I e-mailed and asked about the rooms there. But he made no contact during my visit, maybe because I declined he's request. =)
They made me sign a contract that staying there meant that I'd have to dive through them and not any other companies, even though they didn't go to the places on the dates that I would have wanted, so I didn't dive at all.
The standard room was very standard and a bit pricy for what you get. The mattresses were very thin and a bit uncofortable. And the breakfast doesn't start 7am like written, that's around the time the staff comes to work and breakfast starts somewhere after that, so if you need to leave the island early don't count on their breakfast. There's Mr. Kwiiz or something like that close by, that has better food for third of the price and many vegetarian options.
The place was situated next to few roads so there were motorcycles running around and a lot of roosters making noice. I stayed 4 nights around christmas and the locals were having x-mas parties every night untill 4 am in a basketball court very close to the resort so it was not peaceful and quiet at all. When I went to bed it was 85 desibels (at least according to my phone app) of gangam style for the 50th time for that day, so made it difficult to sleep. So I'd recommend staying somewhere else if you want a good night sleep in silence.

We stayed here last November 2012. We had a terrible experience from start to finish! When we arrived, we were expecting to get a good welcome and the rooms that we reserved for as we have made the reservations and payed in advance. But we didn't. Instead, we were told by the owner and dive shop manager that the room we reserved for is not yet available. So they said that they will switch us to 2 smaller rooms, when we were supposed to have 2 big rooms (we are a total of 9 pax, 4 on one room and 5 on the other room). We asked a simple explanation why this happened. Instead of hearing a simple apology from the owner, he told us that it wasn't his fault and that it was his staff's fault! Wow, what a professional gesture from the owner himself - blame it on your staff and spare yourself, tsk tsk. So we just agreed that our room be switched at around 5pm as they promised. So we had lunch and went back to our room around 2pm to freshen up and prepare our things for the room transfer. To our surprise, they already switched our rooms! They moved our things, valuables without waiting for us! We were again disppointed and dismayed! So we just made sure that there wasn't any item missing. Luckily there wasn't, but the wet clothes of the previous guests were left in our room and got mixed up with our bags. Yikes. So on our second day, we planned to dive with another dive shop because of our horrible experience with them. We informed the dive shop manager that we weren't diving with them anymore as we are diving with another dive shop who is a friend of our dive instructor. He said ok, no problem. The next day, after our dive, we went to back to our rooms to freshen up. The owner confronted one of our friends and said that they have been waiting for us to dive that day. We were surprised because we informed the dive shop manager that we weren't diving with them anymore. Our friend was offended and she and the owner had a fight! The owner even told our friend to "Watch yourself young lady, I own this place!" Wow. I must say he is the most unprofessional and unpleasant resort owner we've met. Our other friend talked to the owner again to ask if he wanted us to leave. The owner said to just finish our stay. So we did to avoid anymore unpleasant experiences. We didn't stay much in our rooms anyway as we were out diving. In conclusion, this is the most terrible and horrible resort we have ever encountered. Don't stay here if you are not ready to face a very unpleasant and arrogant resort owner who will just ruin a supposedly good and relaxing vacation.

Review Response

It is with regret that we get this kind review from any of our customers. We appreciate hearing from our guests and we try our very best to provide them the service that they require. It is unfortunate that their experience with us was not to their expectation.

It is true that they made a reservation ahead of time that they did pay for their accommodation prior to arrival. However what was not mentioned was the fact that they made a reservation for room and diving. The room rate we required them to pay was with the diving discount. We do not require any of our guests to pay their diving in advance as there are many variables to consider (i.e. weather, number of dives a guest can make etc). When the guest made the reservation, we were lead to believe that they were going to dive with us, the reason why we reserved our biggest rooms for them. We even asked for pertinent information about the divers (certification level, size of equipment etc.) to ensure that when they arrive most of their requirements will have already been taken care of. The reviewer mentioned that they changed their mind about diving the day after their arrival when in fact they advised our dive manager that they are diving with another shop after check in. Purple Snapper is a Dive Resort and we give priority to the guests that are diving with us.

The reviewer also did not mention that they required our kitchen to open 1 hour ahead of time the night of their arrival. Our restaurant opens at 7 am to accommodate our diving guest who usually arrive at 7:30 am from Monad Shoal. Had they honored their commitment with us this would have been an issue. As this is a deviation from our operations we charged them a minimal fee of P60 to cover the extra hours of our kitchen staff. Their confrontation with the owner stemmed from this as the guest did not want to pay it. It was only then that the owner realized they have made prior arrangements with another dive shop without informing us. And when he brought up the issue in the most professional manner a lady in their party started talking to him inappropriately. The tone of the review is indicative her behavior. As this all transpired in the view of other guests the owner had to control the situation verbally. It is true that one in their party asked the owner if he would rather they move to another resort but as they have already paid for their accommodation the owner thought to honor the resort’s commitment.

Like any other resort, there are instances when guests decide to extend their stay. The previous occupants of one of the rooms that the reviewer reserved advised us late that they wanted to extend their stay. We take responsibility for not having been able to deal with this smoothly. We did move their luggage into another room to keep it in a secure area while our housekeeping staff prepared their room. If in a rush we mixed items of other guests with their things we sincerely apologize.

As a part of the hospitality and service industries we do our best to make all of our guests happy. We are glad that most of the reviews we get are positive. And there are those challenge us to do better. We honor our commitment to our guests. We could only expect the same from them.

We stayed for one week with 2 younger kids everyone really enjoyed the stay. The hotel is not new but well-maintained. One of two options on Malapascua with swimming pool always a hit with kids. It is located 5 min from the beach - no problem.
For divers the dive shop is very professional with speaking different languages.
The owner Chuck is extremely friendly and helpful!
Excellent value for money also considering the great breakfast and restaurant.
Our best recommendation!

I stayed at the Purple Snapper for 6 days while taking my dad on a tour of the Philippines (I've lived here 3 years here now). The dive staff were amazing. They knew the spots well, were super friendly, and took great care of us.

The resort itself was also quite nice. The food was excellent and the rooms--while not fancy--were clean and comfortable. The resort also had a pool, which was nice to relax in during down time.

I stayed in the Purple Snapper shop with my girlfriend and we also went diving with them. The diving team is amazing. Geoff the instructor and Tony the manager are great professionals and great people. They are reliable, honest and fun too. Thanks to them we have great memories of our stay in Malapascua. We also had an health issue which with they dealt very professionally and personally. I have only kind words for them and 100% recommend them!

Because of some reasons,we can't get to the island in the day time. The manager helped us to solve this problem. We are grateful for that. It's the first time for some of us to do DSD.The manager Tony and Harry are very patient, teaching us the skills in the swimming pool one day before we go out for DSD.It is really helpful for some of us to overcome the fearness of sea. From what we experienced,we thought it's a good place to learn OW.

Before we left to airport, they told us everything need to notice, really helped us a lot. Very sweet and thoughtful. Their price is only the everage price even lower than the everage price. Location is quite near the beach.
Hoping to come back here again.
